It looks fantastic but yes, that hardware driver is needed to make this unit what it should be. (random python script bits flashing thru mind) I can't wait to see how it performs once the networking is figured out. Just bond the (2) 10 GbE ports. Using USB4 or Thunderbolt to "network" leaves you with a very short tether. I used to use my QNAP with TB3 direct attached to a single Mac, but 10 Gbe for the network (and then a pcie upgrade to 25 Gbps.
I am kinda confused. Are you recommending to opt for the previous generation simply because the USB4 ports don't have network drivers? There are two 5 and two 10 gig ethernet ports that all work, correct? For someone looking at this device, who I assume is not interested in building their own, wouldn't those 4 ports be enough connectivity?
Same story with the USB4 connectivity of the new Flashstor devices - actually pretty disappointed that they released it without a driver.. I wonder if Rob happened to have a working driver on his machine because he’s tested something else that property implemented IP over USB4?
Hi there! We didn't release it without a driver. It has the driver, the driver does not provide a connection to different USB4/Thunderbolt silicon. We did not provide Robbie with anything different. In our testing, the only thing we guarantee working at this moment is the connection between two NASes containing the same USB4 implementation. For some reason, it only connects to another ASUSTOR NAS with the same SoC USB4 and the thunderbolt on one particular set of Intel Mobile 13th Gen H series CPUs. That's it. Everything else doesn't work with the latest drivers AMD have released. I would love to release even a beta driver if I had one, but we don't have anything like that. Robbie never gets anything special from us. We send retail goods to our reviewers so that they can review the purchase experience. We're working hard to push AMD to fix their drivers.
How many PCI-E lanes does it take to drive SATA bays? Seems like they missed an opportunity to make the NVMEs at least two lanes each on the four bay version, maybe also the six bay, which have six or four fewer SATA than the ten bay? IF the USB4 networking, or Thunderbolt (are these the same thing?), worked this would be very attractive for the new Mac mini. We could have ultra fast data from the NAS SSDs on the Mac mini, backup to spinning disks, the same data available for other devices on the local network, and it would still all cost less than buying SSD expansion from Apple! Alternatively, I am wondering if one can connect a 10GB Mac mini ethernet port directly to one of the 10GB ports on the NAS and one of the other NAS ports to the local network that has an Internet connection. If you do this, will the NAS route traffic through giving the Mac mini an internet connection?
Interesting product. Good to see an AMD SoC is used as I have two older NAS units that were compromised by Intel errata that could result in bricking the device. There is a lot to like. However, not loving that there is no open PCIe slot for upgrades.
@ The problem with many retail NAS units is that they have limited expandability with respect to storage. So I’d like to see something like an SFF_8088 expansion card that would support at least 8 more drives. These drives should be seen as internal drives to the OS. QNAP offers such an option BTW.

This was not our decision. The CPU comes with USB4 built in. However, we don't control AMD's drivers. The USB4 ports are still useful for higher performance storage devices. The drivers AMD provides were not tested for networking over USB4 in Linux. So we are working hard to have AMD properly implement the feature.

So because there's no intel quicksync, we can't effectively use this as a plex storage server? Additionally, usb 4 for HDD's - that's a bit of a waste in throughput ;)
Hi there! The NAS comes with four M.2 slots for NVMes. The throughput is definitely not wasted. It can still be used as a plex server with some caveats.
for some reason it feels cheap quality in the video relative to its price, I have DS920+ and I want to upgrade but I also noticed the price difference, can you give a long term user review on this later on next year?
TH-cam hardware reviewers are constantly harp toolless drive bays, because unlike a normal consumers they are constantly swapping drives! The rest of us install drives and only worry about replacing them 5-10 years later when they fail, so toolless drive bays don't matter one iotas to most of us. BTW, compared to Robbie from NASCompares, the rest of us are simply not worthy. 😂
Hi there. The ports are not Thunderbolt 4. It is USB4 because this Ryzen CPU supports USB4 only. We didn't exclude macOS. The drivers provided by AMD simply do not work for USB4NET for any other thunderbolt implementation as of late except for Intel 13th Gen. We are working hard with AMD to get them to fix the bugs with their driver.
@ sorry to say, but as the consumer there is no difference whether it is an ASUS or an AMD problem. We, the customer buy it from you ASUSStore: Sonyou have to develop and deliver it corect. Is There NO internal test department at your side, witch ia able to find this MAJOR Bug bevor the releasedate and before the stuf is shiped? here in bougth en 1900€ Euro device and the main reason why i decided for ASUS is not Working - sad

We do not have control over the features of the driver and thus, this is not a decision we could make. Otherwise of course we want to support macOS
i will never buy an amd nas ... i go intel for the transcoding ... but you have to buy things for what your using it for. plex videostream intel is better... pure data you can use whatever you like in your budget
better yet. buy a base M4 Mac mini but get the $100 10 gig ethernet port option. buy a bunch of 16 gb external TB4 drives and you have a nice small NAS that only uses 8 watts of electric out of the outlet.
What the Heck, USB 4 NO GO, whaaaaa 😖. I just tested 7 24TB ironwolfe pro drives.... 6 days and now what the heck am I gonna install them into. Let's get a tutorial to install FreeNAS on this with no igpu. C'mon Asustor WTF. 😮

It seems to be a very powerful machine, but in terms of software and tools, which brand would you recommend as the best?
Synology #1 for software and tools.
Does it have a iGPU? The Snyology ones dont and makes them pretty poor with Plex.

lots of money for what you get. you could buy a full tower case NAS cheaper. metal. no cheap plastic. half the price of this model.

My zimacube arrives today. I got the 64gb ram and had the 20% coupon. $1k for the pro. I am hopeful that I made the right decision

Your large storage units are not going to benefit from thunderbolt 5 (or usb 4) - they don't have anywhere near the throughput lol.
