@thatdude4571 "The filming of government officials engaged in their duties in a public place, including police officers performing their responsibilities, fits comfortably within these principles. Gathering information about government officials in a form that can readily be disseminated to others serves a cardinal First Amendment interest in protecting and promoting 'the free discussion of governmental affairs!" This right to gather and disseminate news is not one that belongs solely to the media, a particularly important principle in this modern era of the news industry, when “changes in technology and society have made the lines between private citizen and journalist exceedingly difficult to draw," the court said. "The proliferation of electronic devices with video-recording capability means that many of our images of current events come from bystanders with a ready cell phone or digital camera rather than a traditional film crew, and news stories are now just as likely to be broken by a blogger at her computer as a reporter at a major newspaper. Such developments make clear why the news-gathering protections of the First Amendment cannot turn on professional credentials or status."

Imagine someone taking their time to ensure your rights are being protected. But ofcourse they have to be jobless to care about the constitution. I guess ensuring the people in charge uphold our rights is wrong in your book. But your comment really showed them. Equally, maybe you can study this video and see how flexing your rights benefits ALL of us. But then again i fear asking you to consider the greater implications might be asking too much of you.

I saw you recording a meeting from a doorway. Not a good idea if you don't have consent to record. Also recording phone conversations in which you do not take part could be a problem too. Especially when you post it online. Under New Jersey law, only one party to a conversation is required to consent to a recording to make it legal. As a result, you can legally record your own conversations with someone else, but recording a conversation IN WHICH YOU DO NOT TAKE PART is a crime.

@@TimetoChangeJerseyStyle all of that nonsense you just copied and pasted is all well and good however it does not apply to the type of stuff you are doing. You did not just happen upon a police incident like what happened with George Floyd. You intentionally go out looking for it. The people who recorded that event just happened to be going about their day and became witnesses. What good would you be since you were thousands of miles away? You didn't even know GF existed until this hit the mainstream media. So, although those people with their cell phone cameras caught all the action - NONE of it meant anything UNTIL the mainstream media got ahold of it. You going around and recording the cops, what do you hope you will find? What have you found? The people you are posting about were not looking for an issue, they just happened upon it. That is luck. They just happened to be in the right place at the right time. Instead, you force the issue by going out and looking for something that doesn't exist until you make it into something that now exists because of you. You are not uncovering any "story" you are MAKING the story about you. That is the overwhelming difference.

Note for future reference: New Jersey Statute: 2A:156A-3. Interception, disclosure, use of wire, electronic, oral communication; violation
While New Jersey is a one party consent state, you not being a party to the communication taking place would need the express consent of one of the parties to it in order to electronically record it. Your video has been forwarded to the local prosecutor for further investigation.

@TimetoChangeJerseyStyle Just as opening a can of whatever and dumping it in a pot, as you have done here, doesn't necessarily qualify you as a "chef," waving your little camera around in "public" making mental masturbation videos doesn't necessarily qualify you as an "independent video journalist," or "1st Amendment rights advocate." You provided me a link to what I had already read. What you didn't do was offer any sort of argument as to how or why you didn't violate that law. As for that canned argument for the right of the individual armed with a camera to act in the capacity of a journalist gathering information for the purpose of dissemination to the public, you didn't bother to offer any sort of explanation as to how or why that would apply to anything you were doing here. You recorded a conversation that would have been more effectively handled by phone, text, or email but would have made for an even more boring video than the one you produced before wandering off elsewhere to record a conversation among others to which you had no legal or right. This wasn't you engaging in "independent video journalism" or "1st Amendment rights activism," but you mentally masturbating over those ideals.

@TimetoChangeJerseyStyle That would have been an excellent citation if you had been, in fact, recording police activity that fell within the scope of the directive, but you weren't. You are also entitled to your own opinion, but you're not doing such a bang-up job at providing a factual basis for it.
