My theory about Henry and the tunnel is that he never had a phobia. He was never scared of the rain at all. He was having trouble building up steam that day, and he just stopped in the tunnel, making up the phobia on the spot to cover up his mechanical issues. He reasoned that, if the Fat Controller bricked him up in the tunnel, he'd at least be spared from scrap.
My favourite things about this special were the introduction between Thomas, Annie and Clarabel, especially when Thomas calls them 'Your ladyships'. And I LOVE the bond between Thomas and Edward. It was like either a mentor/student relationship or a father/son relationship. It touched my heart so much.
This is one of the only Thomas specials that had me in tears... tears of joy. I was also surprised to see Henry in his new shape, thinking to myself "Hey, wait a minute. That's not right." Fantastic work, Thoma1Edward2Henry3!
I really was pissed about Henry in this. They actually get the RWS aspect of James right in this and then go and mess up Henry with his shape which I actually think defines him the most. His old shape made him really depressed and even on Welsh coal he felt The Fat Controller may still consider giving up on him. That was his persona then and then when he had his Black 5 shape overhaul he became a totally different character. Parts of his old persona would show like when he feared Donald and Douglas would be scrapped in The Deputation but overall he became one of the Three Musketeers with Gordon and James after his new shape. The TV series need to revise his character and the media need to encourage them rather than nit pick episodes like 'The Sad Story of Henry'.
+Andrew Brenner 000 He isn't a wimpy character he is meant to be stubborn about the way things should be like when he told the Tank engines to get out of the fat controllers sheds and thought Flying Scotsman was not really worthy of his second tender.
What he's saying is that Henry was not originally a wimp. He used to be arrogant with Gordon and James, but Hit Entertainment wanted to flesh out the personalities better so they decided to make Henry into a timid and worrisome character, but with cowardly quirks as well. I don't have a real issue with it, since the worrier part relates to how he was prone to feeling sick and other previous misfortunes he had.
I have to admit, you have a lot of strong points regarding Henry and how he was handled in this special, such as the aspects like his personality, the way his rain issue was treated and somehow leaving him in his current shape. But on the other hand, there was some good things done as well, such as the remastered versions of classic music pieces that was nostalgia to the ears.
I agree with you, this is definetly a wonderful way to celebrate 70 years of the RWS/Thomas the Tank Engine! I enjoy your videos BTW, keep up the good work!
Personally, my problem with the telling of The Sad Story Of Henry in TAB is the one and only problem I have with TAB. It is not necessarily Henry's character, but that it makes TFC look like a dick. In the RWS and Season 1's versions of TSSOH, he had a reason to brick up Henry, because of his selfish arrogance. (Heck, he even blew steam at his crew deliberately. He was asking for it then). In TAB, he didn't, because Henry was overcome by fear, not stubbornness. I personally just feel that Henry did not deserve what came to him in this special. Henry's Old Shape being obsolete is regrettable, but it would not contribute much to TAB anyway, and they still had a budget to keep to, so it's understandable that they didn't bother.
I absolutely agree with what you had to say in the review. The positives outweigh the negatives, while yes the things with Henry were a bit bothersome and for more or less the same reasons you mentioned but I don't let it get to me. Still it was a nice trip down memory lane watching the film Just like you I had to rewatch a few scenes a few times because of the music. Was I really hearing the old themes, yes I was. :) That was the best part for me.
I did take the liberty to rewatch The Sad Story of Henry, and in the last few minutes, the entire sequence where Henry was bricked up, he did have his sad face on. And to my perspective, I did see this moment on the US release of the very first video from the first season, I remember going to a convention in my home town several years back and I did find it there, I had my relative buy it and when we got home, I watched it and was happy to have gotten the the video, but that's beside the point. The fact that Henry had his sad face on told me that Henry was now starting to regret his actions and that he had no say in the matter when the tunnel was bricked up. That just means you missed the important detail in both the episode and The Adventure Begins.
Let me tell you something, this movie does not belong in the CGI series, ok well technically it is CGI, but I feel like this movie feels like it belongs in The Classic Series, right after Season 7 in my opinion. I mean the music of Mike O’Donnell & Junior Campbell, the old liveries of Thomas & James, to the end credits with pages from THE RAILWAY SERIES??!! WOW!!!!!!!!! They didn’t have to make this movie for the anniversary of the railway series, they could’ve easily just made like some special that referenced it, which probably wouldn’t mean much, but the fact they bothered to make a whole movie to honor the Railway Series and the Classic Thomas Era, was icing on the cake, it was outstanding!
The special from what I remember is really great. But not only was Henry in his new shape in said special, but also in "Blue Mountain Mystery", too. I don't know why, budget issues? You did have a point that it was disregarding past events for Henry having his new shape. Once an engine attached to a time machine taking him to the years when Thomas first came to Sodor, went back to the past years before he had his new shape, went into the past, and squeaked through his funnel, and would not go back again. Oh, and Henry did have a scared look on his face (which I could be wrong) in the first illustration of the original story from 1945 (despite being written in 1942).
I think Henry is in his new shape because younger kids watching the special wouldn't understand why he's in a different shape. It isn't explained in the special why there was an old shape and a new shape. And for children who watch TAB without watching Season 1, they can't understand that. Same for Tidmouth Sheds. (I MAY BE COMPLETELY WRONG)
I liked how they gave James his original color from before he had the accident. I also kinda found it interesting (albeit I was rather conflicted on how I felt about this change) how instead of Henry's reasons for staying in the tunnel being more... arrogant, I guess you could say, it's some sort of fear, which coincides with his current character more, as Henry is a more kind-hearted engine, it also kinda ("kinda" being the key word) parallels how you made it to where the reason for his fear was because he was traumatized by Alfred's accident in "NWR Origins", though it doesn't coincide with his character from back in the books and in Season 1 of the series, and while the timid and shyness does give him a bit more difference in character from Gordon, it honestly turns down the drama of the "Sad Story of Henry Story" a bit too much. I certainly wish that they had animated Henry with his old shape, before he recieved the larger firebox, as that is an important detail. I also, didn't like how they only showed Thomas be cheeky to Gordon once and have a long gap between then and when Gordon payed him back, made Gordon's reasons seem a little less justified, and it seemed less like payback, and more like a petty grudge. But I definitely liked how Thomas didn't wait around, and instead acted on instinct and went straight in to try and help James.
Don't get me wrong. When I saw this I was like "yay Thomas and James in their original livery!" and then when Henry showed up I was like "wait, something is off... that's it, why is he in is current shape?". We know that all these stories in both Season 1 and the Railway Series happened before The Flying Kipper, which was when Henry had his rebuild. I was thinking the writers were trying to mess up the continuity or something. And when you look at, the original shape shouldn't have been that hard to render in CGI when you consider that the differences with Henry's shapes were only minor at the most.

It makes since Thomas arrived after Edward, Henry, Gordon and James. I do wish Thomas was brown/red and numbered 108 before he arrived and Henry was in his old shape and in character.
The green colour on Thomas' original livery was meant to be a homage to the Rev. W. Awdry's very first Thomas model, while the 70 on Thomas' bunker was to reference the fact this special was to commemorate the 70th anniversary of the Railway Series.
Awesome video! This was a very nice review and I have to agree with you when it comes to giving it an A+, or an E (Excellence)+ where I live. I can't wait for your next video :)
Am I the only one who thinks that Henry should have been painted blue for this special, because if you remember back in the railway series books Henry was painted blue in the last part of the three railway engines and didn't get repainted until the first part of troublesome engines Henry & the Elephant. But I guess it was because they didn't have time to do that as well as make a CGI old shape Henry.
Think about it like this, Old Shape Henry (Blue) vs Gordon. They are Extremely Similar. Kids would have even more trouble with it than they would have in the RWS version.
Man I do Wish Judy and Jerome would Appear in the New Season. I mean it would great to have the breakdown train to make a reappearance again and be used as Spares Whenever Rocky is out Helping others. For Glenn I Dont Know what say about him but yea he is like on the Same boat as Bertram that just appeared Once and never seen again just for the purpose of selling Toys.
I had an idea on getting Glynn to the series. In an episode there is an emergency with rocky and Flynn and spencer is the one to collect rocky. After the crash spencer zooms past the station and uncovers some track. Flynn investigates and finds Glynn.
My ranking of the 14 specials, 14. Day of the diesel's 13. Big world big adventures 12. Thomas and the magic railroad 11. Calling all engines 10. The great race 9. Misty island rescue 8. Blue mountain mystery 7. King of the railway 6. Journey beyond sodor 5. Hero of the rails 4. The great discovery 3. Tale of the brave 2. The adventure begins 1. Sodors legend of the lost treasure
I know others had complaints about Henry's off shape. But think of it this way, Thomas at that point just meant Henry at the shed and Edward is the one telling the story. So can we just safely assume that technically? Thomas is imagining how the story takes place since he hasn't seen Henry's previous shape.
I Think Thomas & Friends: The Adventure Begins Should Been Having Thomas And Edward Being First Two Engines To Be Bought By North Western Railway Before Henry, Gordon And James Arrived On Sodor And Henry Should Been Being In His Old Shape Prior To His Flying Kipper Crash
This special rocks so much! It is truly theater worthy and very cinematic! I am content to bootleg watch the other somewhat flawed Specials via TH-cam but I just had to make this my very first Thomas home media purchase. I probably won't go after the DVDs of episode collections except for maybe ones from Season's 1, 18 (no Dinos and Discoveries, i hate Samson) and 20 (no Extraordinary Engines as I hate the Hugo episodes). The only other special(s) I may purchase eventually and for sure King of the Railway and maybe Blue Mountain Mystery and The Great Race. The other's aren't really worth it! I may have to borrow a copy of SLOTLT and truly watch and focus on it but the pirate storyline has really kinda turned me off much like TOTB's dinos thing. I do so much skipping about in the other Pre-Brenner specials except BMM that owning DVD versions ain't worth it. I may purchase TATMR just for sakes as it really wasn't as bad as I though if a bit complicated and nonsensical plus the voices, and also CAE just fir nostalgia's sake if I can find them cheap. I utterly refuse to view any part of Journey Beyond Sodor Again. I was okay with the newbies from what I could see as I skimmed alot due to the awful voices, storyline, and songs and except for Melin anf Beresford I am looking foreward ti seeing them in Season 21 although I could handle Merlin I hate Beresford!
My theory is about Henry in the tunnel being scared about the rain which he wasn’t my theory is: Henry was pulling a train during world war 2 he heard the siren of the nazis and he flew in the tunnel to stay away from the bombs and to hide there while hearing the bomb and screams and sirens at the station he was going to
one thing that bothered me a lot was that henry wasn't blue like in thomas the tank engine, or like in thomas and the gard of you understand, I was really hoping that they would have used his blue livery and they could have made some very funny seen with that consept, but all in all I loved it.
While your point is good; the issue is, kids wouldn't be able to tell the difference between a Blue Engine and a very similar Blue Engine. Even in RWS stories, it was hard to differentiate between the two.
When you think about it, there was a reason why the blue Henry didn't carry over to the TV series and that was because of the fact that he was often confused for Gordon in the Railway Series, especially when you consider how Henry's original shape was very similar to Gordon physically. The TV series was also suffering from budget issues at the time, which also explained why James didn't have his original black livery in his debut appearances. Henry was also prone to being inconsistently illustrated during that time. There was even an illustration in "Tank Engine Thomas Again" that depicted him with square buffers like Gordon's. You could tell that the Rev. W. Awdry didn't like this confusion, so he made Henry go back to his usual green in "Troublesome Engines", and he had once initially intended to write Henry out, but then he eventually settled on the idea of Henry suffering a horrible accident and getting rebuilt afterwards.
I think Thomas should have been brown when he was introduced like the E2s were. also, I think they placed in the coffee pot engine is a nod for the fans
I like Henry’s new personality better than arrogant like Gordon and James. I don’t like Henry’s old personality in my opinion, Henry is quite timid and does show some bravery.
Okay, you've said before that you've read the Railway series books right? Well they had the illustrations from the books in the credits and it shows that James was originally black in the books
I was kinda bothered how they Hadn’t used his original tender either bc James tender is actually a different tender it’s actually I think the same as Donald & Douglas’s tender but ig they might not have known that so it’s fine other than that it was a good movie it would have been cool to add Percy too but ya
People where complaining about the miller era, then we got the arc productions renaissance and when we where busy with that, mettel was brewing up something worst then the miller era and used it to punish us classic veteran thomas fans first with journey beyond sodor, and then big world big adventures, then for their fatality to us fans. Mettel unleashed…..……….IT.
I think Sir Topham Hatt's voice was changed to his UK voice from this special onwards is because he and Gordon from the US versions of "Hero of the Rails" to Season 18, they sound almost the exact same voice because both were played by Kerry Shale, which I think they should have stuck with Keith WIckham doing the Fat Controller's voice for the UK dub from "Blue Mountain Mystery" and "Happy Birthday Sir onwards in my opinion. Not that I don't think STH's voice for the US dub was as great as I thought, but I'd say that voice would be used throughout HOTR-The first nineteenth episodes of S16 in production order.
10:24 It was a major issue in my opinion.I didn't like The Adventure Begins, Mostly because of the problems that you pointed out But many of the jokes were done to death. And still continued to be done in season 19. Like that image on the screen, that joke (I never found it funny to begin with) That pissed me off. And that ending... ugh, that was just dumb.
But don't you think that Henry could have covered his fear up in the RWS/Season 1? I believe that it was a combination between an actual phobia of the rain (being afraid of rain is more common than you think and I don't think it should be called stupid) and actual vanity. Think about it. "Once an engine attached to a train, was afraid of a few drops of rain." I just wanted fans to think outside the box on this issue. I also don't really care about Henry's shape because there is barely any difference from his old and new shape in the TV series. There were even mistakes in Season One regarding the issue and I couldn't tell the difference so it is just best to let it go. I find it kind of ridiculous to get upset over his shape that had some subtle changes.
I surely remember he was on huge wimp mode in that episode. Freaking out just because he thought Thomas, Paxton and Gordon had chickenpox made me know the writers were taking it too far. Thankfully Season 20 has seemed to have fixed his persona.
This review was very solid and the points you made about it were very valid!!! I reviewed this special on my blog, last year and I think that it's one of the best "Thomas" specials yet for his and the "RWS" 70th Anniversary!!! I rated it a 9.5/10 and you can check it out, if you want.: detectivelibrarian.wordpress.com/2015/03/04/review-32-thomas-friends-the-adventure-begins/
James is supposed to be black because in one of the original books were the original series came from he was black I think they're going more off the books and then they're going off the original series
0:20 A bit disgusted that I had to hear that. I understand that around winter time, people can get sick however that's no excuse for this. I was immediately turned off from this video by this instannce. Maybe you were crunched for time and really had to get this out before Jan 31st, but I am very disappointed. Not even 30 seconds in and an audible sniffle is present. This desperately needed a re-recording of your script, maybe when you weren't dealing with a cold?

But think of it this way, Thomas at that point just meant Henry at the shed and Edward is the one telling the story. So can we just safely assume that technically? Thomas is imagining how the story takes place since he hasn't seen Henry's previous shape.
I Think Thomas & Friends: The Adventure Begins Should Been Having Thomas And Edward Being First Two Engines To Be Bought By North Western Railway Before Henry, Gordon And James Arrived On Sodor And Henry Should Been Being In His Old Shape Prior To His Flying Kipper Crash
I liked The Adventure Begins too, but I didn't like the way Henry was portrait.
Awsome video!!! I thought the same way!!
Honestly one song I wish they could’ve used in the special was the island song
agreed with the henry part
Glynn and the Coffee Pots were first, then Edward, Henry, and Gordon arrived in that order, then James, and Thomas was Glynn's replacement.
But because of Sharon Miller Hiro is apparently there too
Even though Thomas and Edward should be first
ReganHD yes but he had been on that siding in Hero of the Rails
Best Movie Apart From The Great Discovery
My theory is about Henry in the tunnel being scared about the rain which he wasn’t my theory is: Henry was pulling a train during world war 2 he heard the siren of the nazis and he flew in the tunnel to stay away from the bombs and to hide there while hearing the bomb and screams and sirens at the station he was going to
that's a lot and I saw on the trackmaster wiki that flying scotsman is coming out this year so he must be in the great race
Edward was the first engine created and in the rws too
I'm pretty sure that TAB takes after the events of the Flying Kipper in 1935
no becuse thomas came to sordor inn 1915 and james came to sordor in 1925
The flying kipper took place in 1835
*1935
i know but TAB takes place before
and if it did thomas would be in southern railway livery and james would be in lner livery *note i think its lner mabye GWR OR LMS
one thing that bothered me a lot was that henry wasn't blue like in thomas the tank engine, or like in thomas and the gard of you understand, I was really hoping that they would have used his blue livery and they could have made some very funny seen with that consept, but all in all I loved it.
While your point is good; the issue is, kids wouldn't be able to tell the difference between a Blue Engine and a very similar Blue Engine.
Even in RWS stories, it was hard to differentiate between the two.
+CameoIntelligents that's what I mean! but I think kids now a days would be able to tell the difference between the two.
***** what?
2:43 Well, we did see more of Glynn. In Series 20.
Maybe the flying kipper happened before the movie
Okay, you've said before that you've read the Railway series books right? Well they had the illustrations from the books in the credits and it shows that James was originally black in the books
I agree with you on everything, except for Sir Topham Hatt’s UK voice since the show is British
I 100000% agree with your issues
Glynn actually made later appearances after this movie
jerome and judy are on the arsdale branch line
anyone seen TheUnluckyTug's thoughts about TAB?
lazer125 I already have
I was kinda bothered how they Hadn’t used his original tender either bc James tender is actually a different tender it’s actually I think the same as Donald & Douglas’s tender but ig they might not have known that so it’s fine other than that it was a good movie it would have been cool to add Percy too but ya
People where complaining about the miller era, then we got the arc productions renaissance and when we where busy with that, mettel was brewing up something worst then the miller era and used it to punish us classic veteran thomas fans first with journey beyond sodor, and then big world big adventures, then for their fatality to us fans.
Mettel unleashed…..……….IT.
yes, but Thomas used to also be named 1O5
I think Sir Topham Hatt's voice was changed to his UK voice from this special onwards is because he and Gordon from the US versions of "Hero of the Rails" to Season 18, they sound almost the exact same voice because both were played by Kerry Shale, which I think they should have stuck with Keith WIckham doing the Fat Controller's voice for the UK dub from "Blue Mountain Mystery" and "Happy Birthday Sir onwards in my opinion. Not that I don't think STH's voice for the US dub was as great as I thought, but I'd say that voice would be used throughout HOTR-The first nineteenth episodes of S16 in production order.
when are you doing slotlt review
I wonder if Mr. Conductor from Shinning time station knows Glynn the coffee pot engine?
Edward was the first engine
thomas and edward
i cant wait fo the great race
I can accept james being black; this is clearly a mix of the railway series and the original show. But i do agree about henry’s shape
And that ending... ugh, that was just dumb.
nice
What happened to Wallace in NWR Origins
He and Adam were brought by a very wealthy family
James was black in the RWS
henry got a new shape cuz he crashed and broke his firebox
3:26 Spot on
I love everything about the special except Henry
James and Edward are the same size. Both medium.
This should of been live action. Not CGI
Why?
Where did you get the sigrid of arsdale model from nwr irgins ep 9
So does this mean you hate Henry Spots Trouble
I surely remember he was on huge wimp mode in that episode. Freaking out just because he thought Thomas, Paxton and Gordon had chickenpox made me know the writers were taking it too far.
Thankfully Season 20 has seemed to have fixed his persona.
hey did you know that Thomas is old number is 70 as the 70th anniversary
5:47 there going of the railway series for black james
This review was very solid and the points you made about it were very valid!!! I reviewed this special on my blog, last year and I think that it's one of the best "Thomas" specials yet for his and the "RWS" 70th Anniversary!!! I rated it a 9.5/10 and you can check it out, if you want.:

Since I can't comment on the great race video why in the world did it get copyrighted
Isn't it obvious why it did?
If they cut out the musical numbers and the CGI movies It would be better #ReplyWithYourOpinion
Aquaphobia
James is supposed to be black because in one of the original books were the original series came from he was black I think they're going more off the books and then they're going off the original series
3 most repeated words in this video:ya,know,ye
I mean 12 new engines
I can't
0:20 A bit disgusted that I had to hear that. I understand that around winter time, people can get sick however that's no excuse for this. I was immediately turned off from this video by this instannce. Maybe you were crunched for time and really had to get this out before Jan 31st, but I am very disappointed. Not even 30 seconds in and an audible sniffle is present. This desperately needed a re-recording of your script, maybe when you weren't dealing with a cold?
At least be grateful that he made a proper video and not focus on such small fucking things. Just enjoy the content for christ sake
Where is the black livery he’s green
