    Mr Dowlen (music teacher) hasn't aged a day since this was filmed! I met him in 2017 at a reunion for his previous school!!

    Little known fact: It was after watching this programme in 1979 that Simon Cowell resolved to write, produce and star in a vehicle that would become known as..... "The X Factor"

    Do we know who the narrator was? I can't see any sign of him at the end credits.

    Which one is Tom Johnson's father, and which his mother?

    It strikes me so much that the whole nature and substance of the school, the very life of it is about the boys. Thats as opposed to having this institution running that the boys have to merge into at the expence of their personalities. Im so impressed with the life and spirit of this school

      Mark Taylor Hi , well i don't think i have ever been so impressed with an institution before, i have watched the whole series. From the talk in the chapel, in No2 i think it was, onwards i regarded the headmaster as an absolute 'jewel' of a man and as i always say, 'as is the head, so is the body'. All these things are a while back and i don't think that things have stayed that way, but that's another story, so why spoil it. ;-)

    The elite choosing their own elite. As so much emphasis was placed on the boys' comportment and presentation how on earth could some poor little working class boy ever have got anywhere near this, no matter how talented he might be?
    I've no doubt many of the teachers were very good teachers, dedicated to their job. But they lived in a complete bubble, isolated from anyone who wasn't from their own privileged background. They all knew each other and it was basically a comfortable, but viciously exclusive gentlemen's club.
    Anyone who didn't do spectacularly well in life, having had the benefit of such a spectacularly privileged education, must feel a total failure.

      @trevorbarre5616 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Of course. The whole thing is rigged. As well as this, relatively poor kids will be abashed by the background wealth; for example, what if they are asked on a skiing holiday or a trip to Barbados?

    • @DuskAndHerEmbrace13
      @DuskAndHerEmbrace13 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@trevorbarre5616 Then they can't go. That's a reality of life. Some people build wealth over time, others don't or don't want to. If you don't have wealth but want to build it then get on with doing it. Don't compare yourself and despair at the differences between yourself and others. There will always be someone better off than you.

    • @trevorbarre5616
      @trevorbarre5616 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@DuskAndHerEmbrace13 Hmmm. I don't think the issue is whether there are people better/worse off than one, but rather that the chips are loaded in our current system unfairly, in that the scions of the more wealthy can 'buy into' the sunny uplands. My youngest daughter, for example, has had to move back in with us because of a lack of affordable rented property - she earns £35 thousand a year. Yet she has friends whose parents have put down incredibly expensive deposits on fashionably expensive flats in such grot boxes as Mile End.
      Many don't 'build wealth', they inherit or benefit from previously existing wealth. You can call it the "reality of life" but that doesn't stop it being an existential void.

    The boy who got top scholarship would never know that in 4 decades his place would be taken by someone of Asian-Hispanic descent.

    Were they paid off? Johnson's oboe playing was insultingly awful. David was the absolutely best of the bunch. Johnson must have a "great" personality.

      I wonder whether they were reluctant to give it to David given he was a Lord to be and probably came from wealth.
