  • In this video, I clean the cooling system the best I can, and make some minor tweaks to the mixture on the carbs. After filming, I discovered that the choke cable under the dash is pretty hacked up, so in a future project we'll be replacing that.

That thing idles nicely! Glad you got the cooling mostly sorted.

Cooling. Heater valve to full hot. Use sealing cap on rad, the one you are using now. Lift bottle off mount and hang from hood edge or catch. Bring up to temp and top off bottle to mid line. Put bottle back on mount. Run around for a day or two and top off bottle if needed. 7lb cap on bottle. Use your temp gun to check temp difference between the top and bottom of rad. If the crud has gone solid at the bottom, flushing rarely shifts it. Citric Acid flush solution may work.
Carbs 12 flats down from full up is a good starting point. A flat either way usually all you need to correct them. Rear carb sometimes tends to run richer than the front. Pistons looked to drop quickly. Check oil in dashpots. Level should be about 1/4" from top of tube. SU say 20 grade which is normal 3-1 oil or sewing machine oil. Check and adjust for equal suction if you do find the synchro tool. Choke cable adjustment should give a small increase in revs before it starts to pull the jet down and enrichen the mixture. Very useful for the first mile or two when starting in cool temps. Choke knob then out about 1/8" which you will often forget to push back.

At idle you should be able to lift each carb piston in turn about a quarter of an inch and have the idle momentarily go up slightly and then settle at a lower speed. Basically you put each carb out of commission by raising the piston, so the engine is idling off one carb, which it should be able to do. You do need to use a UniSyn or other airflow balancing tool first to be sure each carb flows the same amount of air at idle. SU carbs are fun to play with.

Not to be too nitpicky, but raising the piston slightly leans the carb, and since these like to run slightly rich for drivability, leaning it will raise the idle briefly before settling down. You use the same tuning technique of lifting the piston slightly (there should be a pin around that dome's base that lifts it the exact right amount) even on single carb engines.

Obvious question, did you replace the thermostat?
