Marikina Riverbanks Flood Mitigation Efforts Underway
The Pasig-Marikina River Channel Improvement Project, a joint undertaking by the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) and the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH), has entered its fourth phase. This crucial phase aims to strengthen flood defenses in Metro Manila by constructing a significant flood wall along the Marikina River.
Since 2000, JICA has been a key partner in improving the river channel. The fourth phase will introduce vital infrastructure, including revetments, flood walls, and movable weirs, to better manage floodwaters. Notably, the project will include gate structures designed to protect low-lying areas in Cainta and Taytay from backflow flooding.
Beyond structural measures, the project emphasizes soft measures such as public information campaigns. This will involve disseminating crucial information through various media channels to ensure smooth project coordination and implementation. The creation of flood hazard maps is also a key component, providing essential data to support local government units (LGUs) in developing effective disaster risk reduction plans and facilitating timely evacuations.
To address the immediate flood concerns, the DPWH and JICA are actively overseeing the construction of modern dikes and ripraps along the Marikina River, accompanied by river widening to enhance floodwater capacity. Additionally, water pumping stations are being built along creeks and the river to improve drainage.
While these vital flood mitigation efforts continue, the festive spirit is alive at the Marikina Riverbanks Theme Park. The park is now open, offering a delightful Christmas village complete with a carnival featuring exciting rides, delectable street food and seafood, and a vibrant bazaar brimming with clothing, accessories, and footwear. The carnival operates from 4:00 PM to 12:00 AM, inviting visitors to enjoy the festive cheer.
