  • Saturday Night Beech-Nut Show. May 26, 1960 & April 12, 1958. I had previously uploaded both of these performances seperately, however "26 Miles" was blocked because of the record. I decided to re-upload "26 Miles" using "Down by the Station" as a lead in hopes that "26 Miles" wouldn't be blocked. It seems to have worked. Also, the low audio has been corrected in this new upload, although the audio track on the kinny for "26 Miles" is not as crisp. Update: 03/30/13: I tried re-posting this video with the corrected audio and no gray bar but it was BLOCKED due to "26 Miles". I'm not sure why this one was able to slide through, but I have no choice other than to leave this one posted with the audio/gray bar. Once the newer upload is no longer blocked, I will unlock it and remove this version.

Wow...The Youth of the early 60's looked so Clean & Pure and sang positive romantic songs. What a contrast !

DJ Kinney Perhaps. But only to a point. If you directly compare the youth of the late 60s and down, there certainly seems to be a real innocence to them. Oh sure. There were some real trouble makers, No doubt about it. But Compare the troubled teens and the youth back then, to today. It's complete self destruction. And it's getting worse.

Your snide, obnoxious and frankly arrogant comment was completely out of line Oh what a cute phrase you used. Perception Bias" While I"m reading "a more rounded version of history" from "archived newspapers" you will read current newspapers of exactly what is going on today. Now then. Here's where I make you look silly. Tell me sir, where in an "archived newspaper" will it tell me of a common practice of American youths burning down cities to the ground, burning cars, killing people a a mass murder scale. Tell me where in an "archived newspaper" will it say the schools have dumbed down their exams so that our youths can pass their school exams. Tell me where in "archived newspapers" will it tell me in writing, they are protesting and forcing McDonald's to raise the minimum wage so that kids can raise their kids? and make a living? Because the amount of non married children have SKYROCKTED?????? Is this what the kids of yesterday have done? I think not. And tell me where in "Archived Newspapers" do the youth of yesterday have had their own parent ARRESTED for simply being disciplined? No sir, you cannot answer any of these questions. It's time you plead no contest.

styldsteel1 I agree. Some people just have to argue no matter what. Times have changed for the worse. I was in a coffee shop yesterday and the ugly music chased me out. Lyrics where about "screwing women" and hurting them for life. A gross rap song that I complained about. The people behind the counter looked at me as though I was from Mars, they were fine with it..

On this day in 1958 {March 23rd} the Four Preps performed "26 Miles (Santa Catalina)" on the CBS-TV program 'The Ed Sullivan Show'...
Two months earlier on January 20th it entered Billboard's Hot Top 100 chart; eventually it peaked at #2 {for 3 weeks} and spent 20 weeks on the Top 100...
It reached #6 on Billboard's R&B Singles chart...
Sadly, two members of the original quartet have passed away; Ed Cobb on September 19th, 1999 at age 61 and Marv Ingram on March 7th, 1999 at age 60...

Joined the Navy in 1957 and was sent to San Diego. Saw the Four Preps singing out side of the El Cortez hotel in San Diego. At that time, I had no idea who the Four Preps were. They sang a song I believe was called "Dreamy Eyes". Hadn't that before, either. As they say, the rest is history.

I've never been to Catalina, even though I can see the island from the beach. It is nice overlooking the ocean and seeing the sunset from Laguna Beach or from the pier in Balboa or Newport.

One good thing about a vocal group as opposed to a band you don't have to schlep the equipment to the gig, set up, test, perform, breakdown then go home, that's why these guys look so clean and relaxed!

I was 16 loved this song Santa Catalina is an island off the coast of possibly the first sanctuary state ! We should just give California back to Mexicoand build a wall along its border! Those were the days Remember, Where or When you could get a loaf of bread, a quart of milk, and a pound of hamburger for less than a dollar. Teen dances every Saturday night with no problems no drugs just those oldies but goodies
