I saw him live a few years ago and at the end he took questions from the audience. Of course, a lot of the people just wanted to quote lines from Seinfeld to him. Finally he stopped and said. "Imagine you go to work today and tell someone a joke. Then when you come in tomorrow they stop you and tell you the same joke and expect you to laugh". That's what yelling those lines out is like for me". Was such an awesome moment. lol

His standup is all about Jerry. The Show Seinfeld including funny actors Jason Alexander and Michael Richards and great writing from Larry David. His name might be on the show, but Jerry Seinfeld had a lot of help to become so rich and famous. I've never heard him acknowledge that. People may "owe" him on one level, but it is also spread around. When Larry David left, the show went down hill.

I saw his stand up act in the 1990s and at the time he was making headlines for having a girlfriend who was 17. During the show some heckler blurted out “Seventeen year old girlfriend!” Without missing a beat, Jerry responded to the guy, “What? You have one, too?”

To be fair, Jerry is funny, but the raging success of the show (and his subsequent wealth) was based on the perfect storm of writing/producing and a great ensemble cast. Good for him. I'll watch Seinfeld reruns til the day I day die and laugh at every one. The real Jerry? I'd want to meet him about as much as he'd like to meet me or any of you.

He was talking specifically about the exchange with an audience during a standup routine when he said that. He meant he felt he gave the audience more enjoyment from the laughs than he got back out of it when the laughed, and that was the key to his success.

Lol. Me too. I grew up watching the show. I'm 31 now, and still watch it. I like Jerry, and all, but he's way to narcissistic. To be honest, his comedy just isn't funny to me. He had some funny moments on the show, but had Jason Alexander, and Michael Richards not been as outstanding as they were, I don't think the show would've been anywhere near as good as it was. Plus, Wayne Knight as Newman, and Jerry Stiller as Frank Costanza. Those actors made me laugh the most.
Ye but half of those hard laughs were written by Jerry.
He played the straight man to the zany sidekicks.
So no his character wasn't as funny as some of the others.

Brutally honest. And of course he is in a position where he doesn't need to act a certain way so that his next lobster and wine would still be there. Some ppl like it, some ppl hates it. @@sookie1313 The only genuine thing about Mr. Seinfeld is his profound contempt for people. However, since that famous chutzpah scene on Larry King Live, he has been trying to keep it in check. Not because he changed, but because he knows that the top spot on the list of mean celebrities may hurt his image.

I haven’t heard many interviews with him over the years but I can understand his need to set boundaries. He comes across more arrogant than I thought he was, but looking at the cesspool we call Hollywood, he’s one of the better ones.
He has said that people think comedians can be called, yelled, disrespected, invaded as if they should be in the mood all the time. He always tries to estabish respect between his career and the people because comedians are called clowns and people think they don't have a real job. I don't see him arrogant, he's confident and speaks his mind, which is very good.
Really like the interview, but holy hell... please zoom out a bit.. we get it, you got great HD cameras operating there.. We do not, however, need to see screen-size heads...

I always found Jason Alexander to be the funniest person on Seinfeld. And of course Larry David’s voice as Costanza’s boss. 😂
Same here. Jason is my favorite. When I was a kid in the late 90s, and early 2000s, my mom got me into Seinfeld, and my favorite back then, was of course Kramer. But once I became an adult, George became my favorite, as I appreciated his talented acting. Jerry did have SOME funny moments on the show, but not every episode. Or at least I don't believe so. He needs to tone the narcissism down. He acts like the show was ALL him. When it wasn't at ALL. Larry David was a lot of the brains behind it, and then Jason Alexander, and Michael Richards both made it hilarious every episode. I can't even watch a full stand up comedy set of Jerry's, without getting bored. I don't think I've laughed once at his stand up. He's not that good.

Him being bothered by the "man hands" the lady that looked different in different lighting, the girl that wore the same dress on each of their dates lol and he's also a germaphobe that is surrounded by people that are always putting their hands in his food. Lol he's a relatable oddball just like the rest of them, but it's more subdued.

I love how a pure comedian like Jerry will always be working on a word or phrase that can get a laugh, however small. You can see that is his lifeblood and what made the show work, because it’s always the words, those tiny little compositions that make us laugh when watching Seinfeld.
I watched Seinfeld some years back while in depression. It got me out of depression in a few months and after watching the whole series, I googled the actors and was really surprised to see how old they looked.

It is so silly to say that a tv show freed you from depression. So clearly that wasn't depression.
Well, it is nice that you got better. But this kind of speech of 'this show/video/movie got me out of depression' doesn't work in real life. Maybe Seinfield helped a little, but it was your decisions and help received that got you out of it.

The genius of Seinfeld is that it wasn't until the series finale of a 9 season show that people FINALLY realised it was a dark comedy.
Edit: Let me explain. Here's the true genius of Seinfeld the show. Today, we have all these really brilliant, creative, edgy, cynical, insightful comedy shows like Always Sunny, Barry, Rick and Morty, Bojack Horseman, South Park, etc. These are all shows that pushed the envelope so far that watching a show like Seinfeld today, the casual viewer would probably find it more similar to stuff like Friends or HIMYM. But there was always a very real and deeply entrenched darkness to that show and those characters, it was just very well-hidden. Seinfeld never had to have episodes involving hitmen, prostitutes, drugs, abortion, etc. in order to score 'edgelord' points. It was just a show about how pathetically and fundamentally greedy, spiteful, narcissistic, and petty people are. The fact that somehow, throughout its entire run, millions of people couldn't see that because they were so distracted by the whacky situations and catchphrases and goofy nonsense is what truly makes it unique and ahead of its time.

@@SHOTGUNStotheNOSE Well, the very first sesasons aren't that dark, and then it starts scaling almost without you noticing. Also, it is dark in a somewhat weird way, because there aren't that many dark jokes or puns, but usually the plot of the chapter itself is a whole dark joke. It's not like watching family guy and there are constant jokes about death or rape or racism, but rather a whole chapter that spirals around a darkish idea like someone accidentally killing their wife or someone throwing trash into the ocean or someone breaking up with a girl because she has "man hands". Finally, the humor is really situational, like for example they are having a debate about abortion and they aren't making any jokes or saying anything absurd, but the situation is setup in a way that makes you laugh, and you find yourself somehow laughing at abortion.
Right, all the characters are jerks, but funny jerks.

My take on that perfect finale: Yes we loved all of them but those characters were basically jerks and so it was perfect justice.

Agreed. I've always put it down to the rhythm in which he speaks, but I think there may be more to it than that.
Jerry putting his foot down or drawing a line in the sand to let everyone know that he deserves to be a boring, normal, defensive and somewhat irritating human being…like most of us…is practical and downright deserving. Everyone deserves to be themselves and need not explain why to anyone, nor instantly change into a fictional role or character upon demand from a fan.
Jerry has just always exuded that kid in an adult body persona. He is so great.
You did something for them, but you were rewarded incredibly well for it financially, (1 million dollars an episode) lets not forget that Jerry.

The 1 milion dollars per episode figure is only true for Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Jason Alexander and Michael Richards. Seinfeld was paid more than that, since he was main character, main writer, executive producer and showrunner. Every time rights for the show get negotiated, he gets at least a big cut of that too.
Can't imagine how energetic Seinfeld must have been in his heydays. Being a comedian means you gotta perform so many times, come up with enough material that'll make people laugh, remembering your lines every time before a stand-up, then all the acting for the Seinfeld show...not just Seinfeld, other comedians too who've made millions too. Gotta respect the talent & work ethic of these people.

MrEnjoyBeats he tells a story about when he first started out. he was watching some construction guys working, and thought about their work ethic and how much harder their job was compared to his of trying to be a comedian, and they go to work day after day, because its their job. so he decided if he was going to be a comedian he would have to work hard.

We all get cranky let's be honest. The only thing is that when celebrities get cranky the whole world see it.
I've never understood fandom. I like artists, I'm impressed and inspired by great work but I've never felt the urge to put anyone else above me. Whenever I see a celebrity or publicly known person of any kind (usually on a busy street in a big city like New York or LA) my instinct is ALWAYS to leave them alone. It's their private time. I've never written a fan letter or joined a fan club and the thought is repulsive to me. Talented, rich and successful or not they're still just people. If I'm at a book signing or after a show they're receiving people I'll at most say hello, good job and shake their hand. What possible reason or need would I have to do any more than that?

Giving and selling are very mxed up in the context of a laugh thogh. Also I'm sure it was just his humorous explanation on why he, understandably, took the offer of the guy pulling out with his car and not necessarily a serious description of the "powerful" feeling he had in that moment
Try not to cater every bad opinion as 'joke'. Take it as it really is.
He is talking very specifically about his mindset during and after a standup performance, and the resulting exchange with the audience.
he gave us an irreplaceable once-in-a-lifetime sitcom that just keeps on giving. It's priceless.
"I did a lot for this guy..He did nothing for me" Here's the thing: The guy contributed to Seinfeld's relevance by being part of his fan base, watching his shows and paying attention to him. Without an audience there is no laughter, no lucrative contract.
Troubled Sole here's the thing. He has talent and used it to make him laugh. The other guy felt good seeing him- he paid for it because he appreciated the effort. It's a 2 way street

Not only is that fan important to him for being his audience, he may well have done other things for Seinfeld that he is unaware of. The guy could be his kid's teacher or a doctor that cured a loved one or a cop that caught a burglar in Seinfeld's neighbourhood. It is very incorrect and presumptuous of him to say the guy did nothing for him.
I like that Seinfelt is so smart, if he doesn’t like the interviewer he will show it (this one good, Larry King not so much). Btw he is a genius getting the Seinfelt crew together and allowing everyone one airtime but just working diligently to make sure all parts were gold :-)

My friends brother was a major league pitcher at the highest level, a closer in the world series and an all star. She said he could never even go out to dinner, people who hoard around him. His career is over and his life is more normal now but for someone like Jerry it will never end. I think it would grow old.

+danknasty661 The success of a show is measured in ratings, which really boils down to people tuning in to the show and seeing the ads. The more people tune in (particularly of a certain age), the more advertisers are willing to pay and the more Jerry gets paid - in the long run at least. If the guy watched the show, he contributed.

It wasn't free. Everyone's time counts. The math is simple. If this guy he talks about and everyone else used their time somewhere else instead of watching Seinfeld episodes, "Seinfeld" would not have stayed on the air and Jerry Seinfeld would not have made a fortune from his show. By being appealing to us, Jerry Seinfeld earned the right to keep our attention, and so, we gave it to him. We get to be entertained and he gets to be relevant as well as very wealthy.
Thing is, for lots of people, that show wasn't just some product you buy, use, get reasonably satisfied with your purchase and then go purchase something else. To me, it wasn't like a graphics card, a cell phone , a refrigerator or a ticket to a football game. That show to me was pure freaking magic, it gave me a whole new idea on what funny is, I took the comedy style to myself when talking to other people. I bought all the seasons in DVDs, so Jerry has some of my money, but sill, that isn't even a tiny little percentage of what the show gave to me. Well, he is right though. Some of these comments are acting like this one guy watching the show made a huge contribution to Jerry. It didn't. Viewers as a whole? Sure. This individual? No one would notice if he never watched the show otherwise.
To place it simply: Jerry, as an individual, did a lot more for that guy than that guy, as an individual, did for Jerry.
Certainly right about traits that comes as a set as he seems intelligent and talented but also arrogant and condescending. Pricky for sure.

3:10 that's actually very true. Seinfeld has made me laugh for years on free network television and I've never even bought him a Pepsi.
But you did give him money.. just in another form. Your time that you give watching his show on the television, for which you paid a subscription. Then in return, the television paid him money to play the show. So in a way, you've paid for this entertainment. If nobody would watch his shows on TV, he wouldn't get any money.
I hope people get the wisdom behind the delivery. He really understands people. He really understands himself. And he’s at peace with who he is, while also understanding that he’s been blessed with certain things….which came about due to talent and dedication and working on his craft. The great comedians are also some of the greatest philosophers.
What makes Jerry so funny, is that he is like that funny guy in your coffee group, or that one dude at the camping trip that can always riff on the smallest things and keep you laughing. I think people gravitate to Jerry because he’s like that best friend that is so easy to be around, you may not always talk, sometimes you’re both cranky, and sometimes you just want to laugh over coffee or lunch about stupid stuff at work.
He just answers every question honestly. It's insanely transparent. No lying.

I would never be tempted to ask him for a picture but I kinda like how honest he is. He was a part of one of the most successful shows of all time and is worth more than 800 million. He is 3x as rich as Justin Bieber, 8x as rich as Drake, 3x as rich as Mick Jagger. The dudes life is just different than 99.9% of the people on Earth and at least he will admit it. I think it annoys me even more when celebrities try to play the 'every-man" thing when in reality they are just as spoiled as him. I don't like big egos or narcissism but I do appreciate honesty.
I went to his concert a few years ago. Nothing more than a chuckle from the audience all night. Never liked him as much after that.

Well, he is a bit arrogant, but that's not that odd with his stand-up and television past. What I like about him tho is that he seems very honest and sober about things, he doesn't seem to have a secret agenda or is this fake idiots who tries to be liked by the public and goofs around and laughs about everything, like many celebs and comedians.

Really don’t understand how people can hate this guy, hes so relatable and effortlessly funny. Yeah okay his comedy isnt for everyone but which comedians humor is? He has earned his status and even though he can come off as pompous at least hes honest about it and not fake like 95% of celebs. I have a tremendous amount of respect for him and hes only getting better with age. It isnt easy being popular, you have to please everyone which is impossible to do and Seinfeld realized that a long time ago.

Just goes to show people can't handle honesty. The vast majority of celebrities feel the same way Jerry does, but he actually says it, instead of giving the same boring PC soundbite all the other vapid celebs do. "Oh I don't think I'm better than anybody, I'm just a gee-shucks lovable loser who lucked his/her way into fame and fortune!" Bullshit. The first step to being an artist in any capacity is thinking you can do something better than other people and it's worth sharing with the world. The first step to being successful is to be a little full of yourself. This is why pretty much every successful person is at least a little self absorbed.

Galactic123 Well you might not believe it, but some people as much as they love being respected for what they do, they also might not like to put up with servitude behavior towards them at the same time. If a person has to interact with someone else, he or she is likely to want to minimize the distance between himself and that person, find some common ground and serving someone like that does quite the opposite. All it does is it puts pressure on you to act extra nice toward that person, and enrolls you in a conversation full of pointless niceties, when in fact you feel like you'd be better off being left alone.
I kind of like the way Jerry handled the situation that was pushed onto him, he didn't come up there and say hey I'm Jerry Seinfeld can you move that car out of there?

That's how I see it - the guy got a great story out of it, he gave Jerry Seinfeld his parking spot (and probably got a nice thank you/photo/etc. in return).
Honestly, I've gotten SO much enjoyment out of rewatching Seinfeld episodes over the years, I'd probably do the same thing. I think I do owe him for all of the laughter he's given me.

I met Jerry at Pikes Perk coffee shop in Colorado Springs back in 2010. I was ultra respectful, super polite and simply asked for a photo with him. He narrowed his eyes, stuck out his hand, and in his classic "Newman!" voice, said "how about a handshake instead"? Only thing was he was not joking. Thought that was kinda rude....very rude actually.
It would get annoying having people constantly come up to you at all hours of the day and ask for autographs or photos. Comes with the territory I guess but I've ran into famous athletes or stars before and I acted like I've never seen them in my life. I'm doing them a favor.
I've never met a famous person, but I'm pretty sure I'd do the same thing. No reason to say "oh hey famous person, you're a famous person" to someone who has already heard it so many times by other random strangers. Also I don't care for autographs or photographs. "Fan culture" or whatever is weird.

he's actually one of the more 'genuine' celebrities out there, leads a fairly private life, is generous to those he has worked with. These forums seem to be filled with a lot of really jealous Jewhaters sadly. I wouldn't even say that I find his act fall on the floor funny, although I like 'older curmudgeonly' Jerry more than young Jerry, but a lot of his ideas translated really well to the show, being acted out by him and George. In general, he's quite sharp and engaging.
Wow, that last thing he said… I really have to take that to heart and the work I do (which is work as a performer doing voiceovers and general acting). I think it's true… I think I HAVE been doing it with more of a concentration on that next paycheck and getting paid as opposed to giving MORE attention to the client, etc. That said, I DO go out of my way to make sure the client is happy (sometimes a little too far) but the ultimate underlying intention has been more to pay my rent and try to climb up the success ladder as opposed to the giving aspect which I will concentrate more on now that I have seen this clip.
I don't like the fact that he thinks he's done so much more for his fans than has gotten from them. Without his fans loving his show he'd be nothing but a touring comic struggling and playing shows he probably doesn't want to play. Not a man with hundreds of millions of dollars and world wide fame. So why has he done more for his fans than his fans have done for him? We gave him fame and his money by watching his show and he gave us entertainment and laughter. Seems like an even swap to me.

Making people laugh is like giving them a little gift of a break from the mundane and it really is priceless.
Being a comedian changes you. After years and years of looking into people for their annoyances you begin to naturally become rather sinical. I think compared to other comedians, Jerry has done an alright job of maintaining the guy who he was 20 years ago. I think that modem music artists now are so humble, does somehow relate to how they aren't very good, but that's something else.
