One thing I took away from Unfrosted is that Spirit in the Sky needs to be officially retired from being used in a movie ever again. It’s a great song but so overused
I personally enjoyed it because it has all kinds of humour by someone who knows exactly what they're injecting into their film. Jerry ain’t NO dummy & he has studied the art from all sides & he is ONE the of GOAT 🐐 of comedy !
Unfrosted is getting panned primarily because Jerry and his writers made a movie that only someone 55 and older would even understand in terms of historical and pop cultural references. You will only enjoy this movie if you like absurdist humor with a lot of dialogue, rapid fire dialog. Jerry Seinfeld, Spike Feresten, Barry Marder, Andy Robin as a quartet might just be the Quentin Tarantino of comedy in terms of soaking their writing in cultural touchstones and smart dialog but it is literally coming out too late. Unfrosted would have been better received in the 90's when Pulp Fiction came out because then the references would have been more "in touch" literally.
My review: I watched this movie with my wife, who is a Kelloggs Canada sales executive, and we were both born in 1966. So, we had a vested bias going into it, and a generational attachment to the setting and the genre. There were a hundred or so small chuckles at all the Easter egg references to everything from NASA test piolot and Apolo missions, JFK's affairs and assassination, Andy Worhol's art, and many others I probably missed and would have to watch again to spot. It had laughs that this younger generation would never pick up on. In fact, if you are under forty, you'd probably be totally in the dark. We didn't pay $20 each to watch in a theater. We saw it on the comfort of our couch while eating Pop Tarts,,, excuse me "TRAT POPS". This wasn't meant to be a block buster or promote an agenda. If you're wondering what to watch tonight, are over 50, and can laugh at silly jokes, grab some Pop Tarts and give it a try. We enjoyed it.
Pretty funny how Kelloggs had no idea he was making this movie. Instead of going after him for copywrite infringement, they jumped on board and saw it as a chance for some incredible publicity.
The problem with Jerry Seinfeld is that he never had to evolve as a comedian and I think he's starting to realize it. That's why he railed against "pc culture", because he wanted to get in front of the terrible reviews. He couldn't possibly fathom that maybe his shit is stale because, for decades, people have been shining his ass.
This movie had a stacked cast and should have been funny, but I ultimately chuckled two or three times. I am ashamed to say, of all things, the funeral scene (hanging my head low) was the one scene that made me laugh. I kind of hate myself for admitting that, honestly. Lol. I may be wrong, but I feel like this movie needed Larry David on the writing team. There were at least four credited writers that made this script, and it was still weak. As to Seinfeld's comments on comedy, I still think some biting comedy is being made, but it seems to be packaged more in the form of dark comedy (particularly some streaming and cale shows) instead of lighthearted raunchy comedies. I don't watch regular tv, so he might be right about the state of network tv, and he is definitely right about the lack of comedy on the big screen, which is sad. I am with you on believing that the theater should offer something for everyone. But as far as people being oversensitive about comedy, hell, Eddie Murphy, Andrew Dice, Clay, Married with Children, Nickelodeon, Def Comedy Jam, Richard Pryor, etc. had their detractors when I was growing up. The idea that no one got offended by comedy back in the day is bullshit. ADC got cancelled when I was a kid. I remember watching an interview with him, and he talked about getting death threats all the time or guys who wanted to fight him. He talked about trying to tell one angry young man that who he was on stage was just a persona, but the guy still wanted to fight the Diceman. People have always had their own tastes and sensibilities. Try a dead baby joke in a crowd, and you will quickly find the person (or persons) that is not laughing. Thank you for your review, James! Have a good weekend, man.
David here I been a movie fan for over fifty years and I just saw this movie on Friday May 3, 2024 and I had mixed feelings about it. I loved the look of the movie and the nostalgia overload! However I had a major problem with the January 6, scene 😢 I know that comedy is supposed to be over the top, but that was not funny when you realize seven people died and many people were injured. What are the darkest days in America. The scene could of been done in a more generic way and still be funny. I noticed that you did not mention it in your review, so I am just going to ask you, did you think that was funny? I was so upset about it I called Netflix to complain about it and they took my call with a live operator and read me their script and made a note of my complaint
He's completely right, I go to the movies easily 3 to 5 times a month I couldn't even tell you the last time I saw "real" comedy in the movie theater. I still go to the theaters a lot but at least 75% of my friends have stopped going except on the rare occasion and a lot of it has to do with the fact they don't make comedies that go to the theater anymore
As a NYC boomer, I knew who Seinfeld was before TV Show, Seinfeld, and I used to love him, but by choosing Netflix, which I don’t have, to finance and broadcast this, he is sadly meaningless to me. Thanks James for the review
I love Jerry Seinfeld and the guy is already turned 70, but I felt Unfrosted was mid. Not bad, but I felt it was more of the tired fart jokes more than a different origin story. Also, anything that involves Amy Schumer is terrible. Her performance absolutely bombed. If you really want to watch the real pop tarts origin story, go watch The Food That Build America series on the History Channel. It’s a great show that I recommend watching.
To begin with, I’m a superfan of Seinfeld’s standup. I’ll riff all day with lines from the TV series. Unfortunately this was like watching Seinfeld on acid. I enjoyed all the historical references, but I would say this was above average at the most. It was nice of Jerry to give Amy Schumer something to do. Bill Burr as JFK killed.
Here in Germany the Seinfeld-Series is not so popular like in the United States and broeadcast often in the middle of the night. For me who loved Seinfeld, this movie is one of the funniest i ever seen. The cast is brilliant, the jokes on point and the are so many refferences about other movies and series, affairs past or now, that you must see this movie a lot of times nothing to miss. So when i seen the critics from other guys here or of Facebook, i have the feeling they seen another movie like me. The little Seinfeld community here hates the movie, because no one of the seinfeld-cast is in it - or don´t like Amy and/or Melissa. I think both make a brilliant job in this comedy like everyone else. And Jerry as writer and director also in his first movie.
There are fewer comedies because studios dont want to invest the time and money they used to in nurturing a show over time. Cheers was not an overnight success.
Jerry Seinfeld has been saying this stuff about comedy for years. I think as someone who claims to like him, you should know this. Why are you pretending it's just an advertisement for his movie? Maybe you ate too many mushrooms and now have short term memory loss
Ranting about “PC culture ruining this and that” is so passé; just like Seinfeld’s comedy. It’s the last ego refuge of has-been entertainers who are long past their prime. Perhaps Seinfeld’s next move is to be a pundit for Fox News. Anyway, I’ve wasted enough of my time on this.

That’s what is great about America you can make any movie that you want within certain limits. For me he went too far. I feel he owes the public a apology for that scene. But after you read his comments in his comments I see that will never happen. There is a difference between being funny and making a mistake and I feel that he made a very bad decision to put that in his movie. All the best to you and see you at the movies 🍿
Something to remember is that Jerry's position on PC and cancel culture has been well established for years now. It has always pissed him off. When I read his comments, I knew it was just more of the same. I think people may not get where he's coming from, which is one of a comedian, where making fun of virtually anything is what you do. These days there are many topics and views that PC Culture has dictated to the public are to be completely off limits. I agree with him. I don't see that as evolution, I see that as atrophy of society's brain. Somebody makes a joke that is offensive, and now the joke teller gets judged as having an unacceptable belief, and should be cancelled? No. Just no. It was a joke. We used to just either laugh or not laugh. Now we have a whole range of prescribed prejudices on any given topic. I'm with Jerry.

There was a R@pe innuendo in there that surprised me. After he "walked the aisle". The next scene he's in the shower crying "It won't wash off". I don't care one way or the other. But I would imagine a lot people might find that objectionable.

We need to acknowledge that the real genius behind Seinfeld was Larry David.

This movie was one of the worst films I have ever seen. God it was absolutely awful.

Seinfeld: So few comedies on TV anymore
My Nephew: What’s TV?
Have little interest in this movie & Seinfeld in general but watched the video to support anyway! 😅.

Exactly
Larry was always funnier
You clowns don’t know 💩 !
oh man, the plight of ingesting magic mushrooms while trying to cover up the taste with anything around is universal : D
I watched this movie in la awhile ago for a preview screening and i felt that the crowd liked it. Maybe its better in a theater?

You don't need Netflix or illegal P2P torrents. Just google "Unfrosted Free". A half dozen streaming sites will list.

TH-cam keeps deleting my comment.
First half of this vid is a rant about comedy and Seinfeld. He gets to the actual review of the movie at 7:10.
Just watched the movie. Awful, like pop-tarts themselves.
Going to give this one a look anyway, James, mainly for the cast.

Comedy is subjective. I laughed once watching this, I wouldn't even be able to call it a comedy
I always threw my mushrooms on pizza. Pop tarts is hilariously awesome.
In a brew with honey💚🇬🇧🌱

outside of the nostalgic component, this movie seems to be geared towards an audience of 9 year olds.

I would rather eat a pop tart then watch this movie.
It just wasn’t funny. So disappointing.

@ziggy8253 so true. Thanks for saying it.
That is right. Free speech in comedy is so passe. We need more comedy rules. I'm going to sign you up, Comrade!

Unfortunately the trailer turned me right off.
More unfortunate, the trailer was better than the movie.
Definitely agreed with your definition of comedy. If you’re laughing, then it’s funny! You can’t laugh and be offended at the same time.
Kingpin.
Seinfeld seems to be one of the most unlikable humans on the planet.
Always has, always been.
it was silly and childish. Clearly not trying to be anything more than it is.

Larry David has an edgy show that been going up until last year.
Always sunny is what season?
Edgy humor still gets made.
@@theobservarator6424 Exactly. RWNJs constantly whine about cancel culture taking away edgy humour, when what they really mean is bigoted humour.
Shame but I'm heading over to watch it soon as this video finishes💚🇬🇧🌱
The cinematography was terrible
So the last time he was funny was in 1999 lol it's 2024 who's next on your list Dane cook lol

@everythingisawesome76
Or nobody cares about Seinfeld. Either way, in the words of my problematic mom, " That sounds like a personal problem to me."
