    a trick i learned from changing various bearings on motorcycles - put the new bearings in a plastic bag and stick them in the freezer for a few hours or overnight - they will shrink just enough to make fitting super easy

      yep done that many times before when rebuilding motors for my scale glow planes. its amazing sometimes they just slip in they shrink so much, good tip

    I use paperclip bent like a t shape so both sides can grab bearing even, then use a dowel to push on that with hammer tapping

    Glad I stayed for the end of the video, for the very educational tidbit, i.e. "Too much shaft play ruins the balls"...got it! :)
    Awesome video by the way! Loved your ingenuity and very subtle toilet humour...haha.

    not sure why, but I find the clip quite easy to get off. I just maneuver some tweezers at the ends and they pop off. I actually prefer lock rings to screws. I have more trouble removing the first bearing without damaging anything

    I use a big dry cleaning bag to keep the Jesus clip from disappearing. Like a lab glove box

    Great idea with the washer bits, I've done this with large bearings but have not tried this with quad sized motors.
    I have a habit with striking things with the bell- thus killing the motor. But with fixing a bent shaft with a hole in the center is easy, put a driver that just barely fits in the hole and pull the opposite way of the bend- I saved a few motors like this, takes patients and practice, but it's nice to get it true again- obviously weakened, but it's better than tossing an otherwise usable motor.

    • @promethium144
      @promethium144  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      yeah i have had to toss heaps of bells just because they are too worn out. its nice to be able to repair these things and stay in the air a little longer before being replaced

    what bearing do you use? how to find size needed?

    • @promethium144
      @promethium144  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi there
      The bearings i used in the vid were recovered from a damaged motor with good bearings. TBS sells suitable replacement bearings from the Mr steele motors as of writing this they were priced at $4.95US a pair on the TBS website and were in stock. To find the right size I would need to measure some with the calipers but i don't have any on had at the moment, i got rid of all my dead ones. i have seen possibly suitable bearing on ebay and the like but can't attest to their size accuracy and/or quality.
      Hope that helps a little
      Happy flying

    • @promethium144
      @promethium144  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      ke4uyp hi not sure of the best place, but have a look round the normal miniquad supplies many of them sell the mr steele bearings as well as the bells. I savaged mine but buying them is also a good option.

    Beside doing that is there any tool that i can use to remove those bearings at amazon?

    • @promethium144
      @promethium144  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Quite possible but i have never looked plus being Australian our version of amazon is a bit crappy so never even thought to look. the problem is anything that can pull either the top or bottom bearing out also need to clear the hole of the other bearing in some way. otherwise you can just go full gorilla and use a small screwdriver and hammer to push the bearing out, but you risk damaging the side wall of the bearing seat plus you will destroy the bearing (which is ok if you are replacing it) sorry i cant be of anymore help than that.

  • @marlin-fpv
    @marlin-fpv 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Hammering the new bearing you could've just let the old bearings in the motor. Don't ever hammer on a new bearing lmao! Use a 4 mm screw with washers and the old bearings in order to press the new ones into the motor.

    Dam how’d you mess up that many motors. I have crashed probably a few hundred times learning to fly, and I have never ever had to replace a motor.

    • @promethium144
      @promethium144  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I fly hard and crash hard :p. I break the odd motor when I fly some place that is unforgiving. Spots where you might only get one or two flights but is too good not to fly. so it's an all in or nothing situation and sometimes you come back with some repairs to do.

    very nicely made video, congrats!
    I like your idea with the piece of washer too..
    One thing about tapping a solid block of steel onto aluminum (tapping the bearings out, but especially IN w a hammer is not a good idea..), while having such a nice vice as you do! ;-)
    Your vice can apply continuous force over the thread in both direction, think about that!
    I would at least slowly push the bearings in w that one..
    Cheers, happy new year and keep it coming! Subbed!

      @promethium144  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Emanuele
      Thanks for the kind words regarding the vid. indeed i did think about the drawbacks of tapping the bearings with a hammer vs pressing with a vice. in a ideal world i would never tap them. however not every one has a vice so i wanted to show how you could do it with the minimum of tools. as it is you need to make a tool. fortunately the fit of the bearings is a very light press fit so as long as you are careful taping them in it not too dangerous.

      just get a bolt and nut and some washers and tighten the nut and it will pull the bearings in

    • @promethium144
      @promethium144  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      another very good way of doing it you just need to be careful as the bearing initially seats

    • @j0hnny007
      @j0hnny007 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      yes thats true, but I think its easier to see if its seating properly with the screw method than hammer method :-)
      nice flying btw

    Hi
    Could you give me the part number bearings or the dimensions?

    • @promethium144
      @promethium144  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi there
      Replacement bearing can be purchased directly from TBS, I would recommend you get them from them as you just can't be guaranteed you are getting the same spec/quality. You don't want to loose a quad because of a cheap bearing. In the vid I salvaged mine from other steel motors I had previously damaged. Mostly due to stripped prop shaft threads. I unfortunately i don't have any spare loose bearing at the moment to measure so I can't currently help with dimensions.
      Hope that went some way to helping
      May your skies be clear and your winds light.
      Paul
