This song is credited to Harry McClintock and he himself claims to have written it in 1895, though it is believed to be older than that-at least portions of it. It was published in 1928 and didn’t become a hit until the late 1930s-40s.
I first heard this song when I was very, very small (in the 80s!) at a time when I was pretty obsessed with the Rankin/Bass production “The Easter Bunny’s Comin’ to Town,” and they sang a version of this song, or at least a snippet of it. I was pleased when it became popularized due to the O Brother Where Art Though fanfare, and I am beyond delighted to be singing it with my daughter now!
