This is a tragedy. On one hand we have a wonderful remake of the N64 classic with higher textures, more detailed 3D models, new characters, new stars and even some new levels. So what might be the problem? Well, Mario 64 was the first Mario title using an analog stick Unfortunatly the DS only has a D-Pad. You have now two things you can do about that. The first way is just making Mario move directly in those 8 directions of the D-Pad and only use a small amount of smoothing. That WOULD have been good for the player but it wouldn’t look good in gameplay trailers to advertise the game since the smooth movement was a big thing for the original. So naturally they chose the second way : Making Mario move like a car with a steering wheel. Instead of changing directions instantly when you change the direction on the D-PAD Mario runs a curved path, basicly they were imitating analog stick movement. It happens SOOO annoyngly often that you are standing in front of a gap and want to turn around directly but Mario walks this curved path and therefore falls of the edge. To make things worse they have built in a completly useless but annoying dash feature. When you hold down the run button while standing Mario powers up a dash that is executed asap you press the D-Pad again. If you are on a moving platform and still hold down the run button (which you normally always do in Mario platformers) you will dash of into the void everytime you just wanna adjust you position a little bit.

@@treyvonwilliams The n64 version is very overrated. The game has challenges but the challenges are boring and unrewarding. After you get 120 stars, you unlock the cannon to meet yoshi and get 100 1ups . The 1ups are useless because your not going to play the game over again once it's completed . You cannot play as Luigi . In the ds version you get a reward for completing boss fights which is new playable characters. I enjoyed the ds version because the graphics are better , Luigi, Yoshi, and Wario are in the game, and there are new levels .
@@camillevaz6287 some things are better in the N64 version. For one, the textures were sharper and Mario's 3d movement feels more natural with the control stick than the direction pad on the ds.
0:01 - I used to assume the copyright year was a part of the Nintendo font, as it's seen in "Yoshi: Touch & Go", "Mario Kart DS Demo", "Mario Hoops 3 on 3", and "The Legend of Zelda: Phantom Hourglass". Does anyone have a link for the copyright year font itself? Thanks!
I've played this game so much in my childhood I didn't even realize that fans hated it and was a controversial game in the fandom lol. I love it so much
This game needs a remaster with better controls, hd graphics, and Waluigi I mean, Nintendo is making a lot of remakes, so it makes sense for them to make a remake of one of the main line Mario games
Same I remember thinking that these graphics on par with galaxy’s. Such a shame the ds graphics don’t hold up today. Still gonna love this game to death tho lol.
Nintendo should reintroduce this, but with actual analog controls. The digital controls (and the weird stylus add on) just couldn't come close to analog perfection.
The same can be said for pretty much any console viewed outside of their original/intended screen. I used to think the PSP was hi-res until I saw it was only barely higher res compared to the DS.
I find it funny how people say the DPad controls are bad, and it's like that meme where it's like people who use a control stick fighting people who complain about the DPad being outdated, and I'm that one person who STILL uses a DPad today. I prefer DPad controls, DON'T @ ME.
This is a tragedy.

I like this version better than the n64 version .
Both versions were better
@@treyvonwilliams The n64 version is very overrated. The game has challenges but the challenges are boring and unrewarding. After you get 120 stars, you unlock the cannon to meet yoshi and get 100 1ups . The 1ups are useless because your not going to play the game over again once it's completed . You cannot play as Luigi . In the ds version you get a reward for completing boss fights which is new playable characters. I enjoyed the ds version because the graphics are better , Luigi, Yoshi, and Wario are in the game, and there are new levels .
They should've add Waluigi
yes because he existed when this game was made
@@camillevaz6287 some things are better in the N64 version.
Thanks!
I love this game so much
I never forget that video game it is the legendary and the top number one video game in history and now
I played this game since I was 3.
This is most likely what the game would look like in SM3DAS
Best game of the series ever!!!!
I've played this game so much in my childhood I didn't even realize that fans hated it and was a controversial game in the fandom lol. I love it so much
The Yellow and White Star Power coming out of The Green Koopa's Sheel When you ride it is Nice
54:45 Funny sound
This game needs a remaster with better controls, hd graphics, and Waluigi I mean, Nintendo is making a lot of remakes, so it makes sense for them to make a remake of one of the main line Mario games
Omg 😍 i remember the graphic used to be better back then 😂....damn....the good old times
Same I remember thinking that these graphics on par with galaxy’s. Such a shame the ds graphics don’t hold up today.
Still gonna love this game to death tho lol.
They should make Super Mario 64 DS HD on the Switch. The only game I'd every need in life.
I'm buying this soon and I can't wait
So this is a launch Title for the DS huh even though the original was already one for the N64
Wish I still had my copy. I have the original but the save feature doesn’t work...
Best game when i was a child 😭😭
Mine when i was 6 or something...
I know we have Super Mario 3D All-Stars, but Super Mario Sunshine, Galaxy, and Odyssey should get the Super Mario 64 DS treatment.
Nintendo should reintroduce this, but with actual analog controls. The digital controls (and the weird stylus add on) just couldn't come close to analog perfection.
2004 let me wake up in tha mornin get mah ds 2010 WOOHOO ANOTHER DAY WITH MY 3DS
4:57:36 BRO PUTTED A SPINE IN A CANNON 😂😂😂
The better Super Mario 64. Plus, you can play as Wario!
I need this in switch in the new súper Mario 3d all stars 😭😭😫😫😫😫😫
Smh fr
i agree the 64 version is ok
Remember the Christmas my dad looking for this game . :,) i still have my original copy
I swear when i was a kid i thought this game had crystal clear graphics. Now am like what no it didnt look like this o.O
The game looks much better on an Actual DS .
The same can be said for pretty much any console viewed outside of their original/intended screen. I used to think the PSP was hi-res until I saw it was only barely higher res compared to the DS.
I like how Leslie Swan reprised her role as Princess Peach for this game.
“It’s-a me…Yoshi…”
19:38 Mario
A part of me wishes Nintendo would've included this version of Super Mario 64 alongside the N64 original as part of 3D All-Stars.
I find it funny how people say the DPad controls are bad, and it's like that meme where it's like people who use a control stick fighting people who complain about the DPad being outdated, and I'm that one person who STILL uses a DPad today. I prefer DPad controls, DON'T @ ME.
I wonder, how did that Rabbit get the Key to the Castle? That never got explained. 😕
he was Princess Peach's Joy Bunny.
1:32 there is a face under the water
1:35:40 throwing the penguin off the cliff is just mario 64 tradition
If Nintendo ever makes Super Mario 3D All Stars 2, I hope they'll have this as well as Super Mario Galaxy 2 and Super Mario 3D Land.
well, since 3D Allstars is completly emulated you could just use emulators for those including resolution upscaling.
It was released in 1996 and 2004
