  • Lee Chong Wei DB, DCSM, PJN, DSPN, AMN, JP, PhD(SptsSc) (h.c.) (Chinese: 李宗伟; Pe̍h-ōe-jī: Lí Chong-úi; born 21 October 1982) is a Malaysian former professional badminton player. As a singles player, Lee was ranked first worldwide for 349 weeks, including a 199-week streak from 21 August 2008 to 14 June 2012.[1][2] He is the fifth Malaysian player after Foo Kok Keong, Rashid Sidek, Roslin Hashim and Wong Choong Hann to achieve such a ranking (since official rankings were first kept in the 1980s), and is the only Malaysian shuttler who has held the number one ranking for more than a year.[3]
Lee is a triple silver medalist at the Olympic Games, and the sixth Malaysian to win an Olympic medal.[3] He won his first silver medal in 2008, also the first time a Malaysian had reached the finals in the men's singles event. This achievement earned him the title Datuk, and led to then Malaysian Prime Minister Najib Razak describing him as a national hero.[4] He repeated the achievement twice more in 2012 and 2016, thus making him the most successful Malaysian Olympian in history.[5]
On 13 June 2019, Lee announced his retirement after struggling to return to full fitness following a nose cancer diagnosis.[6] He was appointed as Malaysia's chef de mission for the 2020 Summer Olympics,[7] but skipped the event due to his health concerns. He retained his role, albeit serving it virtually.[8][9]
On 2 May 2023, Lee was inducted to BWF Badminton Hall of Fame.[10]

I love how his smashes arent the fastest or most powerful but my god, the positioning, the timing, the precision, the shots selection to force his opponents to lift for him to smash, just superb.

Yea, his cross-smash is so good that make the opponent wonder where is he gonna smash, issit straight or cross?

Funny thing is that his smashes are actually pretty fast, 417km/h is extremely quick, even for professional players. And on top of that he has such good accuracy, as you said.

And it was against his fellow countryman too 😢. Iskandar have defy all the odds to qualify to the final while beating the likes of Srikanth Kidambi on his way.
It was his biggest chance to grab a title to his name but then, stand LCW in his way 😂. Very unlucky.

LOL, no doubt one of the greatest players but GOAT? LCW fans need to admit reality, there's a reason why he lost to Lin Dan in so almost every final...who has more titles?

Axelsen being a two-time Gold medal winner while LCW having none is a crime.

My guess is that it's because of virtually every country's strategy against Malaysia in Sudirman at that time. No hope of beating Lee Chong Wei so they send out their weakest MS in the line up and let their other MS rest that day. Japan at that time already lost Kento Momota (gambling scandal) and Kenichi Tago (got let go). Japan MS line up that year was Kenta Nishimoto and Yu Igarashi (only 2 in MS is typically less than usual). Igarashi, probably knowing there's no point trying, played in a way that conserves his energy for other matches. It was too obvious that Japan sent out Igarashi to lose, so Lee Chong Wei got a little annoyed.
