- For more than a century, Federal Hill has been the center of Italian-American culture in Rhode Island. Known locally as "The Hill," this culinary hub is home to some of the most storied dining establishments in the Northeast. Atwells Avenue is the main drag. It starts at Broadway, across the street from the Hilton Providence, and continues across Route 6 before merging with Manton Avenue.
The majority of the destination restaurants and specialty stores in Federal Hill are located along Atwells, between Bradford and America Streets. The basil, mozzarella and tomato colors of the Italian flag are painted into this bustling thoroughfare, which is closed to motor vehicles on Friday and Saturday evenings during the summer for Al Fresco on the Hill. There are also some notable bakeries and pizzerias along Spruce, which overlooks the Huntington Expressway.

Have you been to ironbound in Newark ?
I grew up in Rhode Island. In the 1950's my grandfather would take me from his home off Willow Street to Atwells Avenue for shopping and visiting with friends. At that time there were cart vendors all along the street selling vegetables, poultry and meats. What a wonderful time! I live in California now but every time I visit Rhody to see family I go to the Hill for some great food and supplies. Then I head down to Olneyville for a New York System Wiener or two, or three!
Thanks for commenting. Not familiar with Olneyville.
@brianmayroam you have to go for the hot weinies!
i love pana vino as well!
Tony, I was also able to try a couple places outside Fed Hill.
I prefer my snails cut into chunks. No celery, no nothing just snails, olive oil, lemon and fresh Italian parsley. You can add other ingredients like hot sauce afterwards. It's my preferences but Venda is a wonderful store.
great video for sure!
Thanks Tony!
You said, “They shut off the street to pedestrians.” …. I think you might need to restate that more accurately.
Hi Paddy. I'll get right on overdubbing that line! Thanks for watching.
charming
And THANK YOU for watching!
Ahhh snail salad. We used to get it shipped to Florida from Johnston
@@HankSnatchez 😮 that’s quite the journey
so funny starts with the pineapple which is wrong...lmao
Hi Don. THANK YOU so much for watching!
So great to see the many places of my life flash by again from childhood! Our family has enjoyed the many excellent restaurants you've highlighted on your tour, some on a weekly basis for decades! Kevin is a great friend of mine and the food at Venda is delicious!
For people who're looking for a spectacular Italian culinary treat as well as plenty of others, try the Hill!!! From Angelos to Venda,The Blue Grotto, Sicilia's pizza or many of the places you just have to discover yourself, you won't be disappointed! Mangia!!!
Thanks for watching. Hope to go back soon.
Pane e Vino is my favorite!! Best food on the hill!
@@kathleenreed2801 I don’t have a favorite, but pane is up there for sure.
As a rhode island resident I can confirm that is how we cross the street
Thanks for watching and be safe!
Thanks so much for this cool video...I haven't been to Camille`s Restaurant in 60 years... One of my best friends growing up was Joey Balasco, his dad was the head chef back then... ...Artist, Old Naples Florida🌴🎨
Thanks 🙏 I enjoyed Angelo’s as well
Gracias, thanks now i want to go.
It’s best during summer I think
Is the Greek place still open
Hi Barbara. Which Greek place?
I think not. Meddteranio or something it was called. That closed in like 2015 to make way for il Massimo
Zooma and Bacco are both closed now as well as the tap house
I love stale salad, the regular way the Italians make it. It is awesome.👍🇺🇸🙏🏼
Stale salad? 🥗
it's not a pineapple and why would they shut the street down to pedestrians? 15:19
For al fresco dining
ITS A PINECONE ?
@@HenrySousa-n2c I probably made a mistake there
They don't shut the street down "to" pedestrians but "for"'pedestrians.
It is indeed a pinecone and not at all a pineapple.
Good morning☕, Yes the Pinecone is the Roman Empire welcoming symbol🌴🎨@@haileylorati9280
Judge Caprio.
Thanks for watching!
You should also highlight the cheese department. My girl, Toni, was there for years and knows her stuff.
Thanks 🙏 I’ve gotten mozzarella for. Venda before
I love Venda's and use to live a few blocks away. Go for the rabe' and also the bread
That’s what I’ll do next time
