Shuo, you are truly such a blessing to all of us! I feel so happy after watching this video because I finally feel like I fully understand how to express time sentences.
This is the best video on your channel! Here's why: 1. You've used common and simple vocabulary that even beginners of Chinese can easily understand. 2. Your sentences have simple structures and grammar, making your explanations very clear and easy to understand. 3. Your explanations are well-designed, with plenty of examples and in-depth exploration of concepts. If you consider making all your videos following this approach, your TH-cam channel would be one of the best for learning Chinese on the internet!
1:58 I've a question about word order : I've seen a few sentences where the 了 is relegated right before the 吗. For example, in Duolingo, we learn : "你看见我的手机了吗?" So for the 2nd sentence on that frame it would look like : "上个星期二你去公司了吗?" Is that a correct way to ask that question ? And if it is, is this equivalent ? Is one more natural than the other ?
@5:15 wǒ děng le nǐ bàn gè xiǎoshí I just learned that with object (in this case nǐ) that verb is repeated: wǒ děng nǐ děng le bàn gè xiǎoshí So now I don't know which one is right :(
I think that the verb only needs to be repeated if it's followed by an adverbial. (I guess that a time duration is not considered an adverbial.) Consider this example: "She speaks French fluently" In English, the adverb "fluently" follows the noun "French", although it modifies the verb "speaks". But in Chinese, "speaks fluently" must remain together, so the Chinese structure would be like: "She speaks French speaks fluently" (where "speaks" is repeated) 她说法语说得很流利
Thank you for the very good lesson. You used 一小时 in one place but 八个小时 in other places. In which circumstances can or should one drop the measure word when talking about 小时?
Great video!❤️❤️ I love how you explain similar words so clearly. I hope you can explain 参观 and 参加 or any other similar word in another video. It would be really appreciated because I've been struggling withe these two words for quite a long time
Those two words are very different. 参观 is to have a look around a place (a rather small place; not a whole city), while 参加 means to participate, for example in an activity.
@@thanapornj1392 Yes, 完成 is used for difficult tasks, but it means complete(verb) and I don't think it can be used in the case of the sentence you made. Instead you can say 我今天下午五点下班 or 我下午五点下班
I think this lesson nicely illustrates that a sentence-final 了 indicates the current state of an ongoing situation. This is especially true if there is a time-duration mentioned in the sentence. But I think it's otherwise also true. We are sometimes told that a sentence-final 了 indicates a change in the situation, but I think this is only true if the sentence is negated. For example 天气不热了 means "the weather is not hot anymore" (it has changed). However, I think that 天气热了 simply means that the weather is currently hot. I think you could say this even at the equator, where it's always hot, because no change is implied.
@@Andreas-gh6is Yes, I agree with you. A Chinese adjective could be considered to be a verb. So my example wasn't very good, because the 了 in 热了 could be considered to be an after-verb 了 which denotes a completed action, which is also a change of state. Let's consider 他住在上海了 where I have moved the 了 away from the verb 住. This sentence just means "he's (currently) living in Shanghai". There is no indication that he has ever lived anywhere else, so no indication of a change of state.
I've also been told you can use "多长时间" to ask "how often", but it seems kind of strange to me. I'm curious about how to ask something like "how often do you come here" in Chinese (where the answer would be "once a week" or something)
hi,i am a chinese student ,my IELTS speaking score is 6 ,i want to find a native English speaker who wants to learn chinses,so we can help each other to improve speaking skill
I was just wondering yesterday which word to use between 时候 and 时间, what a coincidence! Actually I knew the difference between the 2 words, but I was still unsure about which one to use (if not another word). Here is my sentence : 但法国和瑞典的时间/时候一样 (to say that France and Sweden have the same time (no time gap)). Which word would be best to use? Hope someone can help!
Great video Shuo! However, I have a question about the double-了-part. does the following sentence also work? 我学习了汉语了, 因为我想想去中国旅行 I want to express that I already learned some chinese to this day and keep on going for a reason
hi,i am a chinese student ,my IELTS speaking score is 6 ,i want to find a native English speaker who wants to learn chinses,so we can help each other to improve speaking skill
I think that to use the double-了 construction, you need to have a time-duration expression before the second 了. So I think you could say 我学习了汉语一段时间了 which I think corresponds quite nicely to your last statement above.
I think that 一小时 and 一个小时 are both correct. But, as learners, I think it's better for us to include the 个, although native speakers may omit it sometimes. I think that your second answer should be 我今天只可以看十分钟电视 because the object is not a person or a place, so the time duration should come between the verb and the object. In your third answer, the time duration appears after the object 你, and I think this is correct, because the object is a person. However 个 should not appear with 天, which doesn't use a measure word.
