Hey Tom...you are the ONE person in the world that has changed my way. I NEVER wear clothes with names on them, brands, whatever...but I did order one of your shirts. I am not ashamed, I am proud to be a student in your class!
Hey, Tom. Your thing feels like a hang with a buddy who's a badass and and humble. Truly, thanks for making time for us and sharing your mojo and smiles.
Yesterday, two packages came in. A new pedal and a "Hello Class" T shirt. I opened the T-shirt and put it on before I even thought about opening the brand new pedal I just bought. Haha, felt like a kid again. Thanks Tom!
Tom, I’ve just joined you a short time ago for your lessons. Thanks for doing this, I’ll be contributing to the lesson fund. I’ve got a lot of catching up to do. You’re an amazing musician, guitar player and teacher. I look forward to learning from you.
Bahahahah best intro ever, wasnt sure if I was roofied or not, had no idea what to expect, Thanks for all these , prob take my whole life going through all these homeskoolin vids.
Hey Tom, one of the things playing over 20 years that I have always had a hard time mastering is the good vibrato at the top of a big bend like you did during the Frampton solo in this. I feel like it's one of those techniques that separate the men from the boys. I feel like my vibrato is quite good in a neutral string position or on a down bend. Angus Young is another guy that seems to really nail this and it can sound so good on an otherwise simple seeming bend. Also non technique related, I am also from the Buckeye state and now live in Texas. Is there anything from Ohio that you miss that you can't get in Nashville? For me its WhiteCastle jalepenio sliders (i know, call me crazy, but crappy comfort food) or those Grippos bbq potato chips from Cincinnati that come in that cardboard box. Man those things have like a little sugar and cinnamon mixed in with the bbq dust and are just crazy addictive. That and a little onion or spinach dip is heaven on earth. Thanks for all the pearls of wisdom on this channel man. It has been great.
Nice looper class, Lil Tommy.....like the Frampton cover, good stuff, why no guitar mouth tube thing like Frampton, Joe Walsh, Jeff Beck....Loved The Who pix...I was at the same tour in the summer of 76 in Miami....tremendous! Take care Uncle Larry.....
Great stuff as usual, Tom. The beauty of the RC-1 looper (for a rhythmic dummy like me) is it's simplicity. The twirly light is very cool - giving you a visual indication of how far along the loop you are. As I get better with it, the light may become superfluous, but at this point, I'm still glad it's there. I started with a Digitech Trio (band in a box) and the bloody thing confused the living daylights out of me. At that point, I decided to reverse course and go simple. It's sped up my learning.
That's a great Photo, The Who at Winterland in San Francisco was one of the great shows ever at that venue, Frampton Comes Alive of course was recorded there as well. There's another amazing picture of the Who from the same show that hangs on the stairwell at the Fillmore West a couple of blocks away from where the Winterland was, it's a shot from behind Keith Moon towards the audience with the lights on and Pete throwing his Les Paul way up in the air. It's the Last note of the Last song, March 28, 1976, photo by Michael Zagaris. Thanks Tom.
Oh, getting that loop length just right is the big trick with the looper, been using one for over a decade, always a moment of fear setting up that first loop in a live setting.. Something good is happening right now in the musical universe I think it may have to do with Uncle Buk, my workbench is full of repairs and my band is in full recording mode..thanks Tom!
Nice... I spend a couple of hours with Les Paul after watching you...I feel inspired and always have something to mess around with...thanks Little Tommy....
Back in the 90's I went to see Jerry Lee Lewis, it wasn't that crowded so I was near the front. When the curtain opened I was in front of the guitarist in his band I turned to my wife and said "holy shit, that's James Burton." I didn't know he was touring with Jerry Lee, Burton is a big hero of mine. It was pretty amazing standing that close to him watching him do his thing.
Toms neighbors “What in shag carpet velvet elvis was that? Toms garage -“do you feeeeeel like we do (in talk box)?” Neighbors - I think quarantine is making Tom revert to a better time. I wonder what he’s doing in there. Checks TH-cam He’s doing the lords work.
Thanks Tom, for all. Speaking of loopers, I was watching a rig rundown with Trey Anastasio yesterday. It was from like 7 years ago and he was showing off his crazy wacky, super-musical looper and his proprietary "once" pedal. I was smiling.
James Burton is why I play guitar. I was an 8 year old kid watching Ozzie and Harriet and couldn't wait until the end to see Ricky Nelson's band with James Burton on guitar. I was so into it my mother arranged for me to take lessons. I didn't care for my first teacher so good old mom searched for the "best" guitar teacher in town. He happened to be Ted Greene who showed me some chicken pickin and other cool things for years to come until girls, weed and surfing got in the way. That was in 1968, the year you were born Tom. Luckily, I've managed to retain a lot of what Ted taught me.
great stuff as always Tom. you got a name drop from your buddy brian sutton, on his episode of chasing frets . he was explaining how you always remind the lads it's a service industry, about being always able to hang with what's needed on the song. I like brian I'm glad I became familiar with his playing through you. I have that same looper I love it ... cheers buddy.
I saw The Who at Winterland that year! One of the 15 or 18 times I've seen them. I saw every farewell tour! I actually feel lucky to have been here to see all of Pete Townshend's works come to life, as it were. A great artist
James Burton, the man I listened to a gazillion times as a kid in my Dad's car (Elvis' Aloha concert on 8 track tape). Big influence on my piddling playing.
Thanks Tommy! I use a 1 button 'Ditto' looper, it was my first one and I bought it right after release. Works great! It kind of makes you work on loop skills without the temptation of pushing more buttons! LOL 8) I'm 68 and been playing guitar for 50+ years, sometimes I get a short attention span with complicated gear. LOL Nice SG there also! One of my favs... 8) --gary
Tom, Love the lay out of the T. I always liked a small logo on the front and the main design on the back. Have some designed, I'll buy. Thanks for the "Do You Feel Like I Do" Insight, great groove. You Killed me with Paisley, One of my Favorite country artist's. Love the story telling e.g... Water, Ticks, To The World, American Saturday Night, as well as the incredible guitar. Again, Thanks Tom!
Tom, you’re so humble and don’t seem to name drop often, but I noticed you in the Keith Urban John Mayer Crossroads session and was wondering if you could you give us a little insight into like your top 3 moments that actually blew your mind? In the studio or live?
Hey, Tom, synchronicity is alive! I just bought my first pedal -- Boss R3 Looper Pedal. Love it. Only one problem with it. It clarifies how much I have to learn as a guitar player. But, man, it is fun to play around with. My wife may leave me, but we'll just have to get over that.
Took my wife to see Frampton about 10 years ago. She's 5 years younger than me; I was in high school when "Frampton Comes Alive" came out. She was surprised everyone knew all the words to most of his songs, lol.
Looks like there's just been a huge jump in recording time in loopers. If anyone is looking at buying, the new ditto that has a screen can do 60 minutes of time. There's a EHX 1440 now too - 24 minutes. Thanks for the video, Tom.
A really good local player is friends with Burton, Andy Norman, plays a James Burton Tele signed on the back of the head stock by Burton himself. Awesome tones through a sweet Blues DeVille 212.
Speaking of your kids having fun with the omnichord, do they ever ask you if you can play Disney or other musical movie songs for them? For all the practice I put in learning Hendrix fills and theory for nobody to hear, my nieces always beg me to play Disney stuff which is easy enough to learn on the fly, and I have ten times as much fun with them singing their heads off! That's what it's all about anyway isn't it? Great stuff as always my man. Thanks for everything you're doing.
Tom - Thank you so much in general for doing this. You're playing is amazing. And some of the time I can figure out what you're doing after I rewind like 75 times and play the videos in slow motion. "OK - that's E major pentatonic". But my favorite video of your is Volume 5 - the new normal sus chord, where you're paying that awesome firebird at the beginning. That is some great rock and roll. I have tried to learn over and over what you're doing in that video but can't figure it out. It looks like you're in D Major - or D minor or mixing both? Can you explain what you were doing? Many thanks, John
The Ditto is good. But it's weird trying to learn the double-click. Also the way that a couple of seconds of the loop play back when you go to erase the loop.
Hey Tom, whats been on the front burner for you lately? What areas are you growing and improving? Thanks for all the lessons, I have improved considerably these past months thanks to you.
another great one uncle tommy! hey man - dont forget to squeeze in a vintage MMS shirt now and then now that your gettin all these perk threads lol!!! love ya man!!!
Hey Tom, thanks again for the great lesson! As many others here, I'm one of the 'first time TH-cam commenter' just because of your awesome content. I can't express my gratitude enough! I was wondering what the story is behind the 'La Trappe' guitar you have? I'm from Belgium and that brewery isn't too far from my place. Unfortunately, we don't have any Rolling Rock here but I would gladly buy you one of these La Trappe's one day! Also, I was wondering if you are ever inspired by other genres than you usually play (e.g. Iron Maiden, Beastie Boys, etc.)? Once again, many, many thanks for everything that you do for us mortals. Cheers from Belgium and keep on rockin'!
Question's With the evolution of consumer music technology like loop pedal, pedal boards, pro audio interfaces, plugins etc do you think music and creativity and musicians are getting better? All the legends of guitar got so good with far less resources (gear tech/TH-cam etc)
Tom, with all your knowledge of vintage guitars....GIBSON....RECOMMEND A CLASS ON HOW TO ACQUIRE...WHERE TO LOOK....WHAT TO LOOK FOR...personally i am in the market......and your advice would really narrow the shot group.
So at 9:54, is that when super focus/Flow takes over? Familiar. Total musician right there folks. Thousand yard stare. Folks that right there is the real Deal.
I love you man. Your shit is medicine. How do you get such dank tones while not being loud? Do you use attenuation? Or, as I suspect, you're just that good at dialing in the gear?
Tom, I'm always in awe of your ease of playing. Could you share some magic with some Ram Jam or Big Brother and The Holding Company Guitar Playing please? I'd love to take some of your insight on it into my own playing. I appreciate its mundane blues to a lot of people. I love your stuff and greeting from Scotland 🥃👍
Got a RC-1 about a month ago, love it. The only way I can manage to avoid the gap at the start of the loop is to start playing a measure before I want to start the loop, though. Just not skilled enough to start the looper and the guitar at the same time, haha.
Mark Deckard The newer RC-10R is wayyy over complicated but it does have a track counter and the option to count your track in with nice drum opening. You can also choose not to have your drum and recorded track synced, so you can just sit and listen to the drums for however long before you record.
There's actually a lot of great songs on Frampton Comes Alive that don't get mentioned and/or played on the radio. I've always been partial to "I Wanna Go To The Sun"; the late, great Bob Mayo's piano intro is a high point of that song IMHO.
Hardest looper behavior for me was hitting a floor pedal right on the beat. I've always tried to activate/deactivate pedals in the "breath" before the note execution. Like punching in a recording. I have zero issues with tapping delay tempos, etc but getting out of a loop makes me feel like an idiot. Dominant major = mixolydian. I've always organized modes by how they are unlike a major or natural minor scale.
Lots of times when I use a looper I start with a percussive track/muted strings. I bought a Digitech SDRUM to put in front of it, but it likes to play a bar or two then suicides itself. Not sure what's wrong with it.
I’ve accidentally erased many a nice loop containing multiple different parts by pressing the pedal down for too long at the wrong time. But all is not lost. One gets more playing time in that way, right? I guess they call that practising.
My problem with my Boss looper is bungling your second or third loop, and not being able to erase just the most recent one. Anyone know how to do that?
Hello Tom: Can you please make us a list of some of the songs you have played on that you are most proud of? I'd like to listen to some of your work but you've played on so many things it's hard to know where to begin. Thanks...from an American in Saudi Arabia.
Hey Tom! Thanks for all the great lessons! For a guy a year older than yourself, what would you recommend as far as learning guitar? I am a beginner/intermediate as far as chords go, but not very knowledgeable when it comes to lead. What should I be working on to learn and get better as far as both lead and rhythm goes?
Totally agree! I've noticed that in several of the vids. That timing man, spot on! But I guess that's one thing that you really need to have down if you want to be a session man.
Play with people and find their groove. Uncle Larry has mentioned this on a number of occasions. Learn to anticipate where they will be and you'll find your time just automatically develops. Another person I've heard describe this is Matt Scofield. He basically learned to play jamming in the garage with others as a kid. Very rarely played just by himself. Time is in the room and a collective thing. Tom's time is natural. Not clinical like he practiced scales to a metronome. Maybe he did at one point, but I'll bet he spent much more time playing with people.
For the future

@@-Marc2044- glad it helped! At some point someone did the same and made a pro website so I stopped.
Click your looper off ON the first note of the second “go round”… someone taught me that..and it never seems to fail …👍🏼

Anyone who's ever used a looper suddenly appreciates the genius of this man.
Hey, Tom. Your thing feels like a hang with a buddy who's a badass and and humble. Truly, thanks for making time for us and sharing your mojo and smiles.
I noticed your guitar doesn't have any wrong notes on it. Did you buy it like that or does your setup guy at Gruhn do that? Haha
Too Funny!
Too true!
@@wingnutcz I agree .
It doesn't much seem to need tuning pegs either.
Yesterday, two packages came in. A new pedal and a "Hello Class" T shirt. I opened the T-shirt and put it on before I even thought about opening the brand new pedal I just bought. Haha, felt like a kid again. Thanks Tom!
If guitars were light sabers, Tom you'd be a jedi.

I suppose it would be tobacco burst colour of some kind

Phil Keaggy the looper king, man ! 👍
Speaking of your kids having fun with the omnichord, do they ever ask you if you can play Disney or other musical movie songs for them?

I’ve got an rc1 and I find the boss pedal switch ‘sweep’ too large to be dead-on accurate sometimes. The TC loopers feel a bit easier to use IMHO 🤷♀️
The Ditto is good. But it's weird trying to learn the double-click. Also the way that a couple of seconds of the loop play back when you go to erase the loop.
Yeah, had a number of loopers and just wanted the simplicity of the TC. If only it had a second, or dry signal out, it would be perfect IMHO.

That's crazy! I was JUST looking up those Omnichords last week - had never heard of them before.

that Harmony at 10:25 so beautiful.

"Left a cool ol' Gold Top Les Paul for Brad to play...but he never even played it...he likes Tele's" - pure Bukovac gold right there.
I have often thought about what it would be like to watch Tom and Brad play together.
Awesome comes to mind... something I'd definitely pay to see. 😎🎶
Was the Goldtop owned by John Jorgenson? If it was it has magic
Tom,
As talking about Ronnie Dunn, I'm a big Ronnie Dunn fan.
How was working with Brooks & Dunn?
Big fan!
Omnichord is cool. Awesome Tom :)
@7:19 I like your version waaaaaay better....Outstanding man
James Burton, holy guitar man!
Yay Suzuki! Nice hang Tom.
Uncle Larry! You play lots of Gibsons...any tuning issues? What are your tricks ?
Hey Tom, your timing is always impeccable, did you learn that from playing to a metronome as a kid or engrained in you from so much session man work?
@@dep1001 yeah he talks about "the pocket" a lot and that's a "feel" thing not a cerebral counted thing.
Good question .
