the 84 semis were great, plus the commentators added a lot of life to it

I was there that day...a couple of Haw goals in the 3rd qtr starting from the backline were sublime.

So Dipper almost took Austin's head off at 22:20, and either he's not even reported, or, he got reported but not suspended, Because he played the 2nd Semi against Essendon and kicked four goals. Then, in the grand final, he almost kills Kevin Walsh in almost exactly the same circumstances, and must have copped a one week suspension.because he was back playing in Round 2 1985. Both those incidents today would be 5-6 weeks, for each.

@@MB-nv1pf I’m not commenting on Dipper’s legacy, or suggesting that the Hawks were ‘looked after’. Just observing how times have changed with regard to how the league deals with elbows to the head. I’m a Richmond supporter, no allegiance to Hawks, Bombers or Blues. I just enjoy watching these old games

Warren Ralph was such an enigma. He probably came to Carlton a couple of years too late. We were a poor imitation of our early 80's teams.

He was a dry weather player and didn't have much in the way of forward defensive skills which is why we missed Bosustow and on this day, Wayne Johnston so much. Our recruitment during this period was highly questionable. We needed some hard nuts in the backline and around the ball which Essendon and Hawthorn had in spades. When Austin got knocked out no one even remonstrated with Dipper. It was pathetic.
