    had a very interesting story with forge de laguiole. I wanted a 9cm green stamina laguiole but it was out of stock I messaged them asking when they might get a restock(ordering off of laguiole imports) they informed me that the knife I wanted had been discontinued but there was a single one left in stock they held it for me until I had the funds to order it and sure enough I now have the last 9cm green stamina made by Forge de laguiole or so I was told.

    I have an opinel since i was seventeen am 74 now , i still use the dam thing after all those years althoug the blade is getting smaller with years of sharpening , i love it , it was always in my climbing bag , put it this way you scrach it who cares you drop it who cares , what it does it is simple and cuts like hell salami to ropes nor forgetting your baguette and cheese . My 3. blade is just the perfect size

    A stainless steel No.9 opinel has to be some of the best money I've ever spent. At first I didn't like the shape of the tip of the knife and as if my fate it got caught in something and snapped. Filed it off the the shape I wanted and now is a lot better. Scraped up the entire blade when I was first learning to sharpen it but some sandpaper and care got it back to a nice finish. Easily my favourite knife, holds a very nice edge and hasn't snapped or chipped since. Very comfortable and with that locking ring the blade doesn't wobble at all!

    I've got a number of Opinel's and one Laguiol, with regard to the Opinel, they come with both carbon steel and stainless steel blades (INOX is Stainless steel) the carbon steel ones take on a lovely patina over time. As far as the locking ring goes, I think they always featured these (I am pretty sure I have seen 60 year old ones with lock rings) BUT the lock ring did change design slightly around 2000, the original design only locked the blade in the open position, there was no notch to lock the blade in the closed position. The Opeinel No8 is a fairly 'disposable' knife, and makes a good base to modify should you want to add a lanyard.

      C Challinor :- The locking ring was added in the 1950's, prior to that they were only friction folders.

    I've been really interested in these old style knives. I have recently got these two (opinel 8 and ebony laguiole) and am looking for a douk douk, mercator, nontron etc. I love them as EDC knives. I add a little suspension clip to the ones with handle holes to make them s bit more pocket capable.

    I have a Opinel No7 in carbon steel and a Laguiole look-a-like made by Canon.. at least they did not try to pass it off as authentic. I appreciate having them but I agree they sit mostly in my collection

    I have several Opinels, love them. I also have one Laguiole and one Yssinggeaux. The Yssingeaux is the best workmanship, very nice but not a locking blade, same as Laguiole.

      @HaraldSjellose 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      yssingeaux is not a brand, just like laguiole is not. theyre traditional regional knife types

    By the way mine is the carbon steel ,ne needs to care for it to stay reletivaly bright , the best thing about carbon steel blades they bend without braking ,meaning not exagerating how you use it .

    Hi Jim, thanks for your thoughts and sharing two fine looking knives. I was just at MEC today and picked up the exact laguiole you have in the video. Hope your liking it still. I am looking forward to edc'n mine for awhile. I was going to also purchase the corkscrew version but it was their last display model and the blade had a very bad wobble when closed.

  • @AvoidingChores
    @AvoidingChores  11 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Yeah, I had bought them about 2 years ago. Thought I had a steal of a deal with the Laguiole, but still nice to see how this style would work out.

    *Opinel & Laguiole Knives*
    In this video we will look at a couple French designed knives that were popular in my youth since there was a trend back in the 80's was to go to France and bring back one of these knives. And I wanted one.
    So I finally added them to my collection. I don't use them as part of my EDC, just didn't work out based on my needs and how I carry knives.
    The first knife is the Opinel knife, from Savoie region of France. This is a very simple knife, typically with a birch handle and very few parts. The only design change was the addition of the safety collar. Used for light tasks in farming or headring circles, you can find this brand easily and they have many variations on this design.
    The other knife is a Laguiole. This refers to the region of France where this design came out. Originally based on a Spanish design, this knive is known for the craftmanship and detail. Used by farmers for light duty and kitchen use.
    Now the interesting thing is that while Opinel protected the name, that wasn't done. Probably because it is a region, like Champagne. So there are a lot of similar named products out there. So if you are getting this knife, you may want to decide if you want an authenitc made in France or imitation.

    You can tell your Laguiole is fake because the shepherds cross isnt in the cente of the handle. Its still a nice knife though. Opinels are cheap and nasty.

      Basically there is not such a thing like original and fake when talking about laguiole. Unfortunately the brand "laguiole" is no trademark or something else so everyone is allowed do produce them.
