I absolutely love her Im an american in Atlanta and her biggest fan. I still remember the night I was browsing youtube and I found this awesome young lady she is a Beast I can't wait for a concert the States !!
In South Africa alone there are I think 11 official languages ! lets not even talk about the rest of Africa. So Africans from when they were kids are used to listening to music with a language they don't understand. So it's really encouraging to see Americans enjoy the singing and music, even though they wished they new what was being said, but still rolling with it lol
last song translates to "they think we fear them they think we are gonna run but we are not going anywhere we are not going anywhere oohh we are gonna succed we aaare gonna succeed" phumelela means succeed or make it she is speaking Xhosa btw its like Zulu but different
yah u should react to the song too ... dj Miss Pru - phumelela ft amanda black, sjava, saudi, emtee and Areece (but after the falling out areece had with the label they took out his verse when they shot the video 😭)
Sizophumelela "we're going to succeed/we're going to win/we're going to overcome" etc. was a song in relation to the South Africa's #FeesMustFallMovement, a student led protest movement that began in 2015 n response to an increase in tuition fees at South African universities
Sizophumelela... we will succeed, we will prosper ... we will make it.. It's actually about fees must fall movement in s.a were students wanted to have free education in universities.. they held protests and rubber bullets & teargas would be fired by police to stop the protest some students would be arrested.. it was bad.. a lot if things got burnt & destroyed... so she's saying "here they come, holding guns thinking we're scared we won't run away we won't stop we're not scared we will win/ we will succeed" it's pretty much that
the word "phumelela" (succeed) is a single word but it can mean more than one thing, depending on the context. in this song, "sizo phumelela" means "we will persevere.. we will come out victorious". i haven't really digested the whole song but i think in the song she talks about oppression, poverty, etc and fighting against all odds
She's saying " You said you'll come back baby". I think Phumelela(last song) means we will persevere. I might be wrong though because it isn't my mother tongue
Lol many artists in South Africa tend to mix languages in their songs. some are able to rhyme an English word with another word in a different language. after all, we do have 11 official languages😉
Like she explained the last song was inspired by the #FEESMUSTFALL movement which is a South African Tertiary students movement to try fight a system that shuts out students from getting their education just because they can't afford to pay school fees. This involved hundreds of thousands of SA students protesting throughout the country, to which unfortunately was accompanied by a lot of clashes with the law and police getting violent with the students. The movement actually ended up getting attention throughout the world and many other students joined in. Our musicians made songs as well in support to which this one was one of the most popular. This year the former President (uBaba) Jacob Zuma announced that students will allowed to register in colleges and universities for free but the administration around that policy still needs to be polished up. Anyways, direct translation of that chorus: Naba besiza bephethe izibhamu - here they come, carrying guns Bathi siyaboyika, bathi siyabaleka - they think we fear them, they think we will run Asiyi ndawo -we are not going anywhere Sizophumelela - we will succeed/ we will be successful
