    Your comment about not trusting nail salons is sadly so true. I have always wanted to go get a nice formal manicure from a salon but I just know that 90% of the time they would cut off my overgrown proximal fold (I'm working on pushing it back) and ruin all the progress I've made in making the skin healthy. I hope the day comes when all stylists know about the proper care for ridges/cuticles like you do! I've learned a lot!

    • @TheSalonLife

      You know, I sadly think that it's not going to change much because clients expect instant results/miracles when they go to a salon. So the nail techs just do their best often. Or they do what they are told by their boss.
      I don't know how to change that situation. That's why I started showing people how they can do it themselves.

In my research I found that yes Anna you are correct, ridges are wrinkles due to aging and or trama (aging is trama to our bodies) other reasons include hypothyroidism, malnutrition, oxygen deficiency (anemia), retinoid therapy, repetitive hand washing. Hi, thanks for this video. I have this on one nail ( though not as bad as the one in the pic) I use oil at night time on all my nails.
      But I have a question re dry nails : I can’t wear any sort of nail varnish as it seems to dry my nails out - after only a few days wearing when removed my nails are pale and dry looking.
      I’m 66 and I’ve never been able to wear nail varnish without this happening, I get the same with toe nails as well. Is there a varnish out there that actually cares for nails?

    This is one of the best explainations I have watched here on the Internet explaining what's going on. My doctor says it's nothing to worry about. He said it happens to folks as they get older. But he didn't know why it happens or how to fix it.

  • @cherylsykes660

    Thank you! This is the first I’ve seen this problem addressed and it’s been a lifelong struggle for me. My nails are very corrugated and wavy, and my experience is that you are right, oil is the only solution. Dry cold winter air makes my nails so dry and prone to vertical splits. Whereas, my nails look much better in summer with there’s more moisture in the air. I’ve never worn any type of polish, always keep my nails very short and round in an effort to pamper them into the best possible situation. Age has certainly made the ridges worse.

    • @twillbdone3273
      @twillbdone3273 2 ปีที่แล้ว +12

      Cheryl, I have had the same experience. Winter is worse then summer. And I use oils all the time now. And invested in a good pair of dishwashing gloves. When gardening with gloves I slather a vaseline like product called Un-petroleum on just my nails. This makes the condition so much better. I have never been able wear polish even with base coats, primers ect as it just sort of floats off. So, I don't bother. Hydration helps as well. Using Electrolytes in my water. Getting older is a lot more work. I'm not high maintenance, I'm just trying to maintain.

      Yes! the oil does help!
      Also keeping hands moisturized helps a lot. I used hand cream all the time for just two months, and found not only my hands get healthier, the new grown nails also get smoother!
      Btw, I personally found NAILTONE anti crack hardener very helpful, it did hold my nails together. Plus I keep the nail short and round, to prevent hitting or bending, and it went really well.
      My nails went from the ring finger situation in the vid to index finger in 6 month, and I'm happy with it:)

    IMPROVEMENTS!! 😀 I have this issue. I have added a low dose biotin supplement and started using a nail cream called hard as hoof about 6 to 8 times per day. I don't wear any polish. I have had major improvements! Ridges are not as pronounced and I have to file the length down because they grow so quickly. 😄

    • @TheSalonLife
      @TheSalonLife  2 ปีที่แล้ว +15

      Hi Jill! Good to hear that! Biotin would not work this fast. If you had deficiency, it would take time to correct that so the body could make healthier nails. That would be visible after months later as the nail if formed at the matrix. It takes 6 months or so for the new nail to reach the end of the nails. No supplement can improve growth of the nails.
      I think the care that you are doing is most likely helping.

    Mine are exactly like the pictures - accordion nails as you say. I never buff them because the buffing makes the nail even thinner. I use a thin slice of tea bag stuck on with an undercoat, then I use about 4 coats of nail polish. It doesn't fix the ridges but it makes them invisible . I agree with you that there is nothing to be done to prevent the corrugations - I've had them since I was in my 20's , ie for about 40 years . I've tried taking supplements, using every product under the sun , etc. Nothing works at all. Covering them with nail polish is the only thing I can do. Thanks for talking about this , I've often felt like nobody knows about this condition . I hope you'll be feeling better soon.

    I would agree with the oil recommendation. I have one nail that became ridgy post menopause. I find keeping the PNF really nicely pushed back and oiling all the time has massively helped. It has stopped the ridges splitting almost completely. I also have found Zoya Naked Manicure good. Also, if this lady is post menopausal like me HRT does wonders for the nails as well as everything else!!! Hormone deficiency isn't kind to nails.

      HRT is great as long as you are a good candidate. Avoid traditional (hormonal) HRT if you have a history or increased of thromboembolism or certain cancers. Research is even showing that the age cut off to discontinue is very subjective and can be taken for a very long time under proper professional supervision. I am an OBGYN physician.

      Womens International Pharmacy makes Bioidentical hormones derived from yams, I had been taking them since I was surgically menopausal since I was 40.
      The trouble is it's nearly impossible to get an RX for them from today's OBGYNs.
      They're hands are tied by big pharma & big pharma wants them to promote what they are offering at that given time period.
      My nails were fine right up till I could not find an OBGYN to write me an RX for Bioidentical Hormones. I've been off them for about 1 1/2 years & my nails have multiple ridges in them now 😔. I found 1 place to go to, but they want me to spend 1,500 before they'll write me an RX & on top of that, they want me to be locked into purchasing my Bioidentical Hormones from them only. I want to continue to get them from WIP (above) as I trust them & they can adjust your formula for your bodies changes as you age. I have no problem getting & paying for my updated hormone testing & today it shouldn't cost more than $100.00 - $150.00 depending on where you live.
      I miss my ND & wish he never left my area to go to New Zealand, I think he regrets moving there now too.

Thdy have to go to continuing education seminars to keep updated with the constant mew findings of using natural God made herbs, bark, flowers, roots & new combinations that do so many wonderful benefits within our bodies, if you can find an MD that's also a ND, you'll be in the best hands ss they have access to both fields to put a protocol together to cure you ASAP.

    Vertical nail ridges are fairly common and nothing to worry about. Vertical nail ridges extend from the cuticle to the tip of the nail. With age, vertical nail ridges may become more numerous or prominent because of changes in cell turnover within the nail.

Also I don't use soap on hands, I use cerave moisturiser instead, it stops the dryness. I think that ridgey nails are often a chronic health symptom. I've had them since childhood, and they've gotten progressively worse with age. I have some auto immune issues, one of which effects my collagen, another that effects my thyroid so my theory is it's to do with that and the medical connection just hasn't been noticed yet. I've noticed ridges the last couple of years. I am pretty sure it is age related for me. But I was recently diagnosed with psoriasis, so maybe. I do use oils every morning and night. My hands are in everything. I find keeping a couple coats of nail polish is my best defense to keep them from peeling or catching. Gloves are are must for yard work or when my hands will be in water a lot. Initially they look so pretty and plump from water but as soon as they dry, the peeling and splitting worse than before. I don't understand how because my nails are not thin at all.
    I stopped going to a salon shortly before the pandemic shut us down because the kept filing them so thin it would hurt.

    I have certain nails that have ridges some more pronounced than others. I have tried few ridge/base coats not sure wear the same as my traditional base coats. Right now, I am testing out KB groovy ridge/base coat. I guess it suppose to blur too. I usually choose the ridge base coat just for lighter pastel colors. I oil at least 3 times a day try drink water too. I def had my Dr look at my iron, B-12, vitamin D make sure normal. I know thyroid disease can also effect nails too. I heard ridges can be temporarily too. I love collagen and a hair supplement along with other vitamins.

    I always had very ridged nails when I was younger, and I used to buff them -a lot-. (Thankfully I stopped doing that.) Nowadays, my nails are completely smooth. The only thing I do differently is I started taking a vitamin B-complex supplement.
    I can't speak for anyone else, but in my case, my ridges were likely a symptom of vitamin deficiency. I actually clicked this video looking for advice because for a moment I forgot ny nails aren't ridged anymore and haven't been for a few years now! 😅

    Corrugated nails for sure. They are not thick and thin. Mine started age 40 but became troublesome age 60. Zinc picolinate supplement did smooth out 5 of my nails (45 mg daily) and it worked quickly within 2 months. After 2 years, the worst lines have never gone away. I believe the zinc helped a lot of "aging" symptoms .. not just nails. I never had the classic. sign of zinc deficiency which is white spots on the nails.

    Thank you so much for making this video! I feel like the more content of yours that I watch, the more I learn about what's going on with my nails. I started wanting to "fix my cuticles" (dry, hard skin and overgrown, stretched proximal nail folds) and have discovered I also have some habit tic nail deformity (may be due to eczema on my thumbs and some of my fingers, dermatologist prescription creams help when used as directed.) I was wondering if tiny pits in the nails are related to the ridges issue? I do see a lot of improvement in both my nails and the proximal nail folds, bliss kiss cuticle oil, warm oil nail soaks and gentle manicures at home have really transformed my nails so much already. Thank you so much!❤

    I was once told that nails that go that way has a correlation with austio arthrits ('scusey spelling). I have it more on my thumb nails. And it showed up around the same time the arthritis showed up in me. I use two coats of Nail Tek hardner (weak nails to boot) two coats of polish & a quick dry top coat. Covers what ridges I have. So it doesn't show. These nails don't want to grow very long, they'll just split upwards. Besides it makes texting easier & I have an excuse why the thumbnails are short & the rest of my nails are long. LOL! I do leave the ends of the nails more squared with the corners slightly rounded. Gives support to the nail. Reduces breakage.

    I started getting ridges first on the pinky, and then more inward as menopause approached. The thumband index have the smoothest nails. Though i improved my diet 5yo, recently incresed excercise and hope this helps w improved circulation. They tend to split and flake on the tips and are worse with water exposure- but i live swimming in the summmer! One time i innocently buffed and made it worse 😮
    I'll watch the video on fillers. I accidentally got a gel mani on these otherwise virgin nails and think that the pre buffing is going to be a real problem when i remove them in a few days. Thanks for all the videos with tips to make the most of what i have naturally.

    Hi Anna, have you done swatches of different base coats and ridge fillers to find ones that result in a very smooth layer for polish? If so I'd please let me know. For me, I've found most base coats too thin to level a ridgy nail bed. Gel setters and gel top coats seem thicker and to level the nails better before color and top coat. All the best.

    I love it that you and MSL have named his ring finger Mount Ridgemore. I have ridges, too, especially my ring finger.
    I love this video! I’ve commented in many posts in Fb that we don’t have ridges, we have valley’s and we don’t want to thin the thick part to the level of the thin part.
    I have always used ridge fillers. Sometime I do use one layer of a sticky ridge coat followed by a ridge filler and sometimes I do two coats of a ridge filler. One product I like I a sticky ridge filler. It’s a sticky base coat mixed with a ridge filler. I usually do a sticky and a ridge filler. It kind of depends on the polish. Flaky polishes don’t show ridges as much but creams show them a lot more. I can get creams and other polishes to look nice and level and not show the ridges. So for me, the ridge filling base coats work well.

    I have a ridge on my pinky where the nail free edge tends to break and split off from the ridge if it gets any length at all. I also have thinner/bendy nails. I have found applying the Mavala Scientifique (not K+) to most of the nail and all of the ridge works GREAT for strengthening down that ridge and preventing the breaking and splitting off from that ridge. Of course, keeping all my nails with polish helps strengthen them (at least while the polish is on) and prevent them from breaking as well. I’m sort of becoming a DD fanatic, but it seems to really strengthen my nails so well while it’s on. I just want more colors! Thanks again, Anna - take good care and get well!

    I'm not a nail expert or a nutritionist, but I have been taking notes on my own nails for fifty years. My nails have no lunulas since I've improved my nutrition. The ridges require a magnifying glass to see. My nails are very quick to dry out after a bad meal, often within hours. My nails hate butter, fried foods, and any food that is stale. My nails love cooked carrots and Vitamin A supplements, also zinc. The next time you have a nail break ask yourself what you have recently eaten. If you are having a nail attack get your nails into warm water as soon as possible.

    • @TheSalonLife
      @TheSalonLife  7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I'm also not an expert on nutrition so I stick to giving cosmetic advice :)
      This is my new disclaimer which I should be adding at the beginning of the videos
      Nail condition results from both :
      -internal factors (age, genetic, nutrition, medication) influencing nail characteristics when produced by the matrix
      -external factors (infections, mechanical and chemical treatments…) influencing both nail aspect.
      Nail aggression due to external factors mainly translates into unaesthetic changes in nail appearance, but also in physical proprieties resulting in weakness and brittleness, discolouration, formation of horizontal ridges.
      Nail plate is not metabolically active, so it doesn’t have any active protection/reparation mechanisms for counteracting damage.
      It is their own, natural structure which oversees its preservation against external aggressions.
      As nail structure cannot be repaired, it is crucial to have proper nail-care products and habits to prevent damages due to daily treatment, lifestyle or environmental factors.

    I had good luck with silk wrap for my ridges. I've got health issues that caused ridges, so I know this isn't a solution, but using plain silk wraps (no fiberglass) was difficult to do with only one hand. I got it to work well one time, but it's so difficult I don't think I could do it again. I used polygel to fill them, which was nice, but it's sometimes hard on my nails to remove gel. Your warm jojoba oil soak is the thing I've been trying most lately. Don't know yet if it's working, but it feels really nice!

    This is actually a very painful problem because the nails split into the beds. I have taken so much biotin that a physician had to get involved to ween me off - and it didn't help. I have taken prescription meds to no avail. SeroVital has been a godsend! No idea what's in all those daily supplements but my nails are stronger than ever.

    • @TheSalonLife
      @TheSalonLife  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Proper diet and general health have a huge impact on nails. Good health is about balance too. If someone is deficient in biotin then supplementing it makes sense but just taking extra biotin hasn’t shown to make nails stronger or healthier.
      When it comes to diet or health I always suggest talking to a doctor and nutritionist before self medicating.

    Weleda Skin Food ingredients: water, sunflowers oil, lanolin, almond oil, ALCOHOL…other ingredients. With water FIRST and alcohol FOURTH I don’t think this is a very good choice. Wouldn’t 100% oil be better? I’ve mixed my own using almond oil, jojoba, avocado, tea tree and a bit of E. I use this for the warm soak once a week and for my nightly oil before bed. 🌹 Barielle makes a ridge filler, too.

    • @TheSalonLife
      @TheSalonLife  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Water is not always useless and a waste. Often it's a solvent for many actives that don't dissolve in oil. Actives don't have to be full strength to be effective either. Sometimes all you need is 1-3%. Same with alcohol.
      Oil is not the only thing that is helpful for nails. That's like saying that eating only blueberries is a good idea because they are healthy and full of antioxidants etc.
      That Weleda product might be nice but I don't think it's that unique or that much more beneficial that a DIY mixture of oils. The key in skin care is consistency and not "miracle products"
      If someone likes Weleda that much and it makes them use it often it's a winner then :)

      DD Mend should be good for overall nail health too. I personally like fragrance free products for daily use.
      It's funny for once in a while service I really like fragrance which adds to the experience but for daily use fragrance free is a must.
      White spots are a sign of surface damage so Mend would be good for that. I wish they made it fragrance free.

    A lot of oil, almond oil preferably and lemon. Use lemon direct on your nails 2or 3 times a week, it going to be perfect.

      Hi Melody. I definitely don’t recommend using lemon on the nails. It’s too acidic and it can cause photosensitivity
      Just because something is natural doesn’t mean it’s harmless. Mixing citrus juice with sunlight can cause phytophotodermatitis.
      You could end up with blisters, welts, burns and a ton of pain (and even scarring).
      That’s what can happen if you get citrus juice on your skin when you’re in the sun.
      You can also get it simply from squeezing a lemon into your water while sitting on a patio - though that’s less likely to happen.
      Citrus substances can cause an inflammatory/allergic reaction when exposed to UV rays,
      There’s also the risk of developing a sunburn with lemon juice - this can happen if you apply lemon right before going outside into the sun.

    Interesting enough l have very deep ridges that are dry and crack on my left hand on my last three fingers. I am right handed and don’t do anything different on my two hands but three nails are horrible and the rest are smooth and healthy.

      That is interesting! I guess that's how the nails decided to grow.

    One of the medical causes of nail ridges is Lichen Planus. It is a autoimmune condition. The only thing that has helped my nails is colloidal or ionic silver. You can soak your nails for 10min a day. I buy aloe vera gel infused with silver. I rub it onto my clean nails every night.

    • @TheSalonLife
      @TheSalonLife  6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Lichen Planus looks different though. One of the signs is ridging but there are other symptoms like thinning of the nail plate, pterygium formation, shedding of the nail plate with atrophy of the nail bed, subungual keratosis, longitudinal erthronychia (red streaks), and subungual hyperpigmentation

    I have nails that once they grow a while will break about a quarter inch below the cuticle. What could be the cause and is there a remedy? I am in my 70’s but this has been happening since my mid 20’s

    How are you supposed to moisturize with nail oil if your keeping polish on your nails so the ridges don't get worse and split. How is the oil supposed to get to the nail plate??

  • @UESGrl21

    Will oil penetrate if you’re wearing nail polish (Dazzle Dry)? I know through the proximal fold or living skin it will but what about the nail plate. I guess what I’m asking is there any way to keep your nails healthy (if they are prone to being dry and ridgy) while wearing polish?

    • @TheSalonLife
      @TheSalonLife  10 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Oil might penetrate the polish to some degree but not all the way through the nail I don't think. Also it depends how many coats you are using. This is why I recommend taking breaks from polish (like polish on for 5 days and off for 2) and during the break do warm oil soak and apply oil after each hand wash.

    I’m a man and I have the ridges. What I have found that works for me is to keep them cut down very short and clipping them twice a week. As the nail grows from the bed it’s prone to drying and splitting or catching so as I said I keep them clipped twice a week and have no problems.

    • @keekeejenkins6162
      @keekeejenkins6162 ปีที่แล้ว

      But that's not really addressing the root cause. I don't mind keeping my nails short but people want to grow healthy (and/or) long nails
