This woman was unmatched in her prime. The way she hit those notes in her high register and beyond. She outsung her album version. What a voice. Pure talent.
Nah I love the record version. She sang it with grit and it served and fit the Song very well. Here she has a preppy approach which is super nice to listen to but I still love the rawness of the original record
this performance is a mini vocal masterclass. the *projection,* the enunciation, the posture, the phrasing, the emoting, even little things like her putting her hands on her hips to give the word "respect" a little push 0:40 and the musicality of escalating the "yeah, baby" in each chorus until that ringing G5 at 1:41 . flawless. and it's like she purposely set out to obliterate the studio vocal.
Well, someone said that she was sick. Presumably with a cold or something, when she recorded the studio version. Same thing with swv's "weak". The lead singer was sick, and still had to sing. These records labels could care less about their artists.
For people that say I don't know why people think Aretha Franklin was so good. They will look right at this video and not accept it. Her voice/vocals are unmatched here. This is why she is the Queen of Soul!!! You would have to be blind, deaf, dumb and dead not to hear it.
Just shows the very commanding voice she had. Songwriter, composer, great pianist, singer. She did it all and did it well. She is singing so effortlessly on the live performance. Voice is in the stratosphere here and staying up there during the entire song. She may be gone but her music is never going anywhere!
You are somewhat correct. Coming from a church background, there were lessons she was taught how to sing and I’m sure she had a mentor in piano if not from her own father Rev C.L. Franklin and mother.
I'm so impressed this was taped in 1967.. the bright pink of the set, the choreography and fact that it's a mixed group of dancers. All very progressive and well done
Most of today's younger people have never seen a younger Aretha Franklin. Much less a clear video of her. Back then there was no female white or black that could compare. Back then I never saw that she was jealous of anyone, hated anyone or had an attitude as some say. I never saw it. As a young black man I saw a beautiful black, gifted woman That loved her people and the world.
@@iantuition Not sure how familiar you are with her overwhalming catalog. I could send you many many recordings of Aretha belting with straight chest. Aretha sounded better live than in the studio every single time. If it was any other artist it would surprise me, but the GOAT fills me with awe. This performance is just fun, the lyrics boil down to "you forget how lucky you are to have me, dumbass, treat me better," she bounces on the platform while energetic 60s dancers in turtlenecks float around her, and her runs sound like a ray of sun. Just vibes and good feelings.
They call Aretha the Queen of soul, but she really was the Empress. Her singing makes you want to jump out of your chair or bed or whatever and just dance dance dance.
I'm very pleased to know I'm not the only one that loves her songs, how often do you like to listening to her songs. She remains the Queen of soul, a great artist, with lovely voice. RIP Legend.
I've watched this countless times and every time the video hits the 1:41 mark, a tingle goes up my spine and I get gooseflesh--EVERY time! Growing up, I often heard that "no one is perfect". After listening to this, I beg to differ...
Wow, Aretha was a FORCE of nature! What a voice! What an amazing stage presence she had too! I love the dancing around her, those dancers were great. She felt the music, and made you feel it too. I guess that’s why it’s called soul music: it touches your soul.
The dance choreography was simply top notch theatre hyperbole in keeping on the vivid and punctual rhythm acuteness. I can definitely see where a lot of today’s contemporary dance moves came from.
The dancers were a bit distracting but anyway Aretha was a phenomenal singer. All she needed was a microphone to give a great performance. The Queen of Soul! 👸🏾🎤
omg aretha voice was powerful, youthful, and fresh.. but as the years past it slowly started to change.. just like whitney ..80's untouchable..and aretha during the 60's the same .. vocals young and powerful
