When I flex a horse I want to touch my boot with their nose, Mr.T knows this so when he wants to go somewhere and gets frustrated he flexes on his own, touches my boot trying to teach me that he is paying attention and give him his way. Since I normally release pressure when he does this, he learned that when he wants release he touches my boot and I play his game and give what he wants, it is a leader thing, I let him think he is leader & he lets me think I am leader. Ying and yang.
Think Like A Horse ....that is so fascinating. What a smarty he is. I don't have a horse, but love them and animal behavior, so I'm trying to learn about what makes a horse tick. I'm loving these lessons about horse/rider/trainer interactions. I'm pretty versed in dog behavior, but understanding a prey animal's behavior obviously is very different, and I just find the difference in their train of thought so interesting. I love your common sense approach and I really, really love how you don't use a bit. (is that tack? Still learning the horsey lingo, trying to make my way through your vids). By the big deal you make about bits, it makes me think your approach is not the norm, and I find that sad. It seems you're as free-rider (again, not sure of term, no saddle or reins) as you can get short of removing everything from the horse. If more people would understand the way horses think and how to listen to them, as you teach us, the horsey world would be a better place. And boy have I learned just how crappy it currently is from yours and other's videos. As someone not of the horse world, I really had no idea about some of the atrocities being made, particularly in the name of sport. Being an equestrian is such a big business, you just think it's the way it's presented. Pretty horses with pretty people, using their skills to accomplish difficult goals. You hear about all the crap done to race horses, but you don't hear much about the jumper world. Boy has the wool been lifted from my eyes. I'm truly sickened by it and just can't bring myself to watch the jumping sports I really loved. It's all been soured and rightfully so. Now I'm striving to learn and to advocate. Sorry, didn't mean to write a book. 😊
samiamisme I realize that this is a very old video. But I wanted to tell you how much I appreciate your observations. Perhaps you’ll see this after all these years! Who knows! God Bless
Thank you for all you do, Having a horse is like bonding and guiding your child, that you love, it takes a lot of time and patience and awesome advice from you !!!
when i learned to ride it was mainly by trial and error. if i didnt listen to the horse and his concerns as u addressed it in this video, i fell off. it sucks to fall off. me and my friend had no fancy instructions but we learned body language. i love ur horse sense. down to earth, let the horse be a horse, and we have to invest ourselves as a partner. keep the good sense flowing.
During the time that I had my horse, I didn't realize I was reading her and she was always trying to talk to me. It was fun learning from her. She saved my life a few times, because I listened to what she was showing me. Thank you Rick, for all this information.
I didn't discover your videos until late 2017, think like a cop, gun people videos. Because I am not now nor ever was a horseman. I rode many times as a teen and pre-teen because friends on the Army posts I grew up on had them. I've really come to enjoy your horsemanship videos and you its cool to "go back in time" to watch your videos from 10 years ago. What I love about your horse videos is your obvious love and respect for your animals! The way you treat them as a partner and life long friend, the way you allow them to be themselves by allowing them those freedoms to change their position when standing so they're more comfortable instead of demanding them to be rigid and, in your terms, not considering them disrespectful in doing so, and not "teaching them whos boss" as apparently so many horse riders are told they must do, from listening to you.Just from watching and listening to you explain your methods and reasoning behind them tells me that you enjoy a much more special relationship with your horses, which benefits them as they also enjoy their relationship with you and you both have better lives by far! I can clearly see what apparently so many horse owners just plain miss, and unfortunately for them, and especially for their horses, they will never enjoy the mutual respect and pure love of each other between horse and rider that comes naturally from the way you relate to Mr. T and Buddy. I hope your videos will help open some horse owners mind to the possibility of how they can have a better relationship with their horses, and I am sure your videos accomplish just that!I hope you and your animals enjoy long happy lives, Its a thing of beauty to watch you work with and relate to your animals and my hat is off to you Rick!
I've combined how you treat and understand horses with Clinton Anderson's method and turned my bucking mare who would spook a the drop of a hat (literally) into the best trail horse i've ever had. Now she tries to chase turkey's though. I think i've desensitized too much :D
this was the first of your videos I saw, when looking for advice on my horse spooking on trail. I'm so thankful I found your channel. have been working on my horsemanship, not the cars, and now it is a lot better with the cars, because I wasn't a clear high horse, teaching with pressure and release. thank you :-)
Some spooking is easy to deal with from the saddle, but when it's extreme I feel I am more useful on the ground. I can always fix things that way and when I get back on, we are both calm.
You know, Maria Montessori taught the spontaneous discovery of a child, they all went at their own pace, non aggression principal, volunteerism, respect for personal property.... complete the circle, you get it, you put it back..lol funny how patience and understanding work, that is love, the automatic response to virtue..🐎🐴🐓
I watched this video when you first released it and you have helped many horses that have passed through my hands since. I also have learned to listen better to my guys since.
if you cant handle your horse on a loose rein without a bit, its a good sign for u to go back to the basics. for saftey and confidance in you and your horse.
My horse is better away from the barn even tho shes gets scared at times she still listens to me, bless her shes the lead horse with one eye how amazing is that I love her we are family she keeps me safe I've had dogs off the lead and barking at my horses legs but shes didn't react I shouted at the owner to get there dog cause if my horse kicked there dog it would be dead, even tho my horse was as good as gold, they are oblivious of the danger xx 🐎💞
I go horseback riding all the time, and the horse-riding instructor is named Drew says that if a horse is refusing to go after you say walk on just give it a little kick just enough to get it to move. but I also listen to what the horse is saying.
Its interesting that you talked about manners, its something i see here in england ALL the time "Thats rude," "thats a bad mannered horse." that was one of the first things i noticed when i started work at my yard. Its interesting to look back and when i was really inexperienced, because sometimes it takes a fresh pair of eyes to stand back and say, "why the hell are you expecting a horse to have a understanding of manners?"
Hi Tanner, Buddy & Uncle Rick. Although I do slow down and move over as much as I can when I drive by a Horse I did not know it’s a law out here in Komifornia. Have a great day all. BIG RON OUT. P.S. Hi Smokie🇺🇸
@amieHERSELF : Direction is better than correction (discipline). You say he twist and takes off, I say you are not ready, you are not paying attention, you are not preventing him, you are not seeing the signs before he does what he does, you are not aware of what your horse is about to do, which is why you are saying he does this randomly or at nothing. If the horse gets stopped and controlled and backed up each time it becomes work and he will stop since stopping is easier.
Thank you for your response. We'd bought a mature gelding a few years ago. Great horse, but he's done that very thing under pressure of being asked to cross water. I'll take it to mean just what you said of Mr. T. I've still not acquired acceptable water crossing from him though; only some truly amazing leaps! Cool to understand how he's thinking when I'm pushing.
@LadyKaliska : letting a horse eat is the same as anything else, you allow it and you stop it and don't allow it. All the other reasons are just BS. If a horse eats when you don't want him too, he is telling you that you are not a strong leader, you are not in control, he should not listen to you since you don't know how to stop him or control him.
it s a partnership, that says alot. to many are I am boss crap, when your dealing with a thousand pound flght and flight animal you find quickly how much of a boss you really are when your horse runs away or buck or takes off and drags you. I appreciate the part about what if something happens when you force the horse to step on that trash can and something happens to scare him, then he loses trust in you. not a good thing.
I'm relatively new to horses and you're vids are really helpful compared to others. I try however to avoid negatively and think your info would be more effective if you put more emphasis on the positive or right way to do things and not so much on the wrong things people do . Your then positive impact on horses and those who ride them will explode and improve the treatment and quality of life for all concerned which I see to be your goal Thanks for all the tips I know it's a bit of work doing these bids
I think a lpt of the having to show whos boss mentality comes from having no trust in the Horse.not having spent the time or done the work that deep down they know they are lacking so they grab at Ego.anyway.im often walking the two Ponys and we need to walk along a road.they are cooll with it.its me that gets nervous and I have a bit of a time to get myself at ease.remembering that they trust me helps in those instances as I pull myself together and take control of myself so I can act and keep them safe.
I feel what you say there, Rick. I've made a mistake myself, and I've learned from it. I noticed my mare was reacting to a dog (stray, so no one could control the dogs) and I had only seen one. I know you shouldn't face a dog or he feels he is being challenged so I looked away and I had my dumb moment, I should've been more aware, another dog came from the opposite side, mare spinned too fast and I fell off. Hard lesson learned. I broke a vertebrae, but I'm all right now and I'm trying to get better. Never blamed her for it, it happened, I was dumb not to have realized there could be another dog, the dog was being a dog. I knew she wasn't comfortable with the dog and as it was a moving object I didn't want to do what you did with the trashcan. Now I just pay more attention to horse and evironment. Some lessons are hard to learn.
That was a very informative video. Here is my question and if you have a video already made on this subject send me the link! I have a 2 year old colt that I intend to take riding...everywhere. I do ride him on the property, back pastures but I have not taken him out to the 2 lane hwy yet. I have brought him close to it behind a fence and he get's agitated when truck's fly by and some even honk their horn's (which to me is very disrespectful, knowing if I had been in the saddle he may have flipped out). He does trust me and know's I won't put him into a dangerous predicament on purpose, but I am trying to learn how to actually take him across and down road's and pay's attn but doesn't lose it. Love your video's! Love you Buddy and Mr. T!!!!!
I live in California and no most people just zoom on by when riding horses. It's usually happens to me, when I'm out riding. People are seriously rude.
Hi. I have an Haflinger mare 15 yo.On the trail We were attacked by 6 dogs and her reaction, because the dogs kept chasing and biting her heels, was to kick and to bolt and run. So at this point I finally stopped her with One Rein Stop. But the next day the situation it was the same. How do I get her past this fear now? She never minded dogs before, even if they were running when I was working. I want to resolve this problem before it become an unsolvable.
we have spd limit laws too re speeding past horses but as usual no one pays attention to it. sometimes I wonder who spooks the most...driver or horse and rider. you are right...we as riders need to think ahead when riding be it the road or bush. as the girlguides teach..be prepared.
@horseawareness thank you so much for these videos Mr. Gore. I really appreciate these because I have a dream of being able to ride and do what you do. I have watched over half of your videos, and I've learned a lot. If you would, do you think you could post a video on how to deal with a green horse that doesn't get along well with other horses? I would really appreciate it. Thanks! ~Ciara
I'm going to ask this here, since the hotwire mention. I don't have horses of my own, but do trail riding once in awhile. As you know, when riding a trail horse, one has to do their best to keep the horse from eating the grass (since it can cause issues if they do for the horse, choking ect*) How can I as a rider dealing with a horse I just met, keep a trail horse from eating grass in a way that's not yanking hard on the bit (like the trail leaders suggest)? But it still gets the point across...
Green on green equals Black and Blue - you a long way to go to under the true meaning of this and the only way to get rid of green is study, spend time with a horse and experience. To your ? how do you know a pilot won't crash a plane on you? RE: kim smith 1 year ago Aren't all horses unpredicticable. How do you knowthat your horse won't just take a big leap into the road in front of a car. Is this taken a while to get him to this point.
Saddle and stirrups help distribute a riders weight. Without it, you're bouncing on a narrower surface area. Think of it this way, if something heavy was on your back, would you rather the weight concentrated on one or two vertebrae or spread out over several.
This is a little off topic from the video, but Ive been riding my mare in a halter and when I canter her she always tends to go faster and faster and so I have to almost constantly hold her back, but how do I get her to just canter on a loose rein?
What about deer skin....i was told that the guy needed to hang it in his horses stall so when they go deer hunting he can handle dead deer when they pack it back.... is that a real thing or is it wrong?
@@ThinkLikeAHorse thankyou...I have never seen the guy ride....or handle his horses. I really appreciate your videos...please dont let the negative people get you down...my horse and i have grown so much together because of your guidance.
From the horses point of view, the tipped trashcan might look like a crouching predator, especially compared to the standing trashcan. So, play along and work on the issue.
Hello, I have a problem with my Mare where when I take her out on the trail she gets distracted a lot and she gets a little hot and speeds up and sometimes spooks. When I'm on a road I don't know how to calm her down so that she doesn't get into any trouble. How do I calm her and relax her on the trail? Thanks(:
+Taylor Jones my youngster does the same thing, we got into a real mess on the road today and it just made me realise how dangerous a really spooky horse can be
i have a question regarding my spooky horse. He sometimes just randomly spooks at nothing, well im assuming it is at nothing.. I really believe he just wants an excuse to spook and twist and take off in an attempt to get me off. Do i just go on doing what i was going or should i discipline him so he learns not to do this?
How would you recamend getting your horse to not spooke or get destracted on trail my horse act compleatly diffrent on trail than she dose in the arena she acts much diffrent on trail even in our feild she acts diffrent act fine there also she acts like it another arena but as soon as you put her on trail its nothing but her getting destracted and spooking and pointers you could send my way
Hi Rick, I just went out for a trail ride today and my horse spooked at a whole bunch of things I couldn't see. How do I build her confidence like this if I can't see what she's afraid of?
she is a horse it is her job to stay alive, the horse is spooking because you are nervous and scared if you ignore the spooks, keeps riding easy and don't try and fix it or prevent it, it will go away. All horses spook until they learn they don't have to. RE: Hi Rick, I just went out for a trail ride today and my horse spooked at a whole bunch of things I couldn't see. How do I build her confidence like this if I can't see what she's afraid of?
It happened to me and my best friend. We were on a trail ride loping on a nice dirt trail. A large black and white King Snake was right in the middle of the trail. Our horses jumped over it, but then my bestie had to catch the snake. Horses will try to move away from a snakes generally.
Hi rick my horse always gets into fights while I'm bareback but not when I saddle him I'm lucky I haven't fallen during one but I want him to stop so that noone is hurt what should I do

I love this. Just as I was thinking that there were no real horse trainers anymore.....
That’s exactly what I do! I see to many riders beat their horses when they are scared of something!
I've watched this year's ago xx
Thanks Rick! :)
Nice road to ride along
the horse flexes, he did it on his own
I live in California and no most people just zoom on by when riding horses. It's usually happens to me, when I'm out riding. People are seriously rude.

But it still gets the point across...
Green on green equals Black and Blue - you a long way to go to under the true meaning of this and the only way to get rid of green is study, spend time with a horse and experience. To your ? how do you know a pilot won't crash a plane on you?
RE: kim smith 1 year ago
Aren't all horses unpredicticable. How do you knowthat your horse won't just take a big leap into the road in front of a car. Is this taken a while to get him to this point.
wouldyou say that if i can predict how rick will handle the situation i understand horses?
@zorroismyhorse Rick has a video about bareback riding. He isn't fond of it cause it can hurt a horse or put pressure on its back from what he said.
rose444100 ...so a saddle won't hurt the back compared to bareback? Am I understanding that right?
Depends on horse and experience
@@ThinkLikeAHorse thankyou...I have never seen the guy ride....or handle his horses. I really appreciate your videos...please dont let the negative people get you down...my horse and i have grown so much together because of your guidance.
From the horses point of view, the tipped trashcan might look like a crouching predator, especially compared to the standing trashcan. So, play along and work on the issue.
John Amidon lol I hadn’t thought of that now I’m picturing sentient trash cans thank you lol
Fast forward to minute 9… And LISTEN UP horse owners!
What does that "boot touching" mean at the end of the video? Is it response to flexing/one-rein training or is it something else?
How would you recamend getting your horse to not spooke or get destracted on trail my horse act compleatly diffrent on trail than she dose in the arena she acts much diffrent on trail even in our feild she acts diffrent act fine there also she acts like it another arena but as soon as you put her on trail its nothing but her getting destracted and spooking and pointers you could send my way
Sacking out. Horses do best what they do the most.

Funny, I never thought of just ignoring it, and it's the simplest solution. Thanks for your response, I'll try that the next time we go out.
When the car went by and you backed the horse up, would the horse not think that he is in danger because you are pulling the reins tighter?
Not if you stay relaxed and keep the reins soft and loose after asking.
That truck could have slowed down!
What do you do when it’s a snake that spooks your horse or another dangerous animal? (Just curious. I’ve never been in that situation)
It happened to me and my best friend. We were on a trail ride loping on a nice dirt trail. A large black and white King Snake was right in the middle of the trail. Our horses jumped over it, but then my bestie had to catch the snake. Horses will try to move away from a snakes generally.
Hi rick my horse always gets into fights while I'm bareback but not when I saddle him I'm lucky I haven't fallen during one but I want him to stop so that noone is hurt what should I do
Mr. T looks so much like my moms Morgan :)
I bet Tanner thinks you talk alot! Hahaha!!!
Lol!
can you ride by yourself? I keep getting told you can't because it's dangerous but riding a horse anyways is dangerous.
of course you can, a horse will sometime get nervous out alone but the more they do it the better and more confident they get.
Think Like A Horse alright thank you. should I ride my horse in my pasture for a while and desensitize her in the process first and then take her out
That's a trash can? Lol I thought it was a giant toy thomas the train engine
the ignorance. it hurts.
Don't worry, hun, Rick's common sense will make your pain disappear.
