Im really sorry to hear about your dad. Me, my dad and my father in law are all working on this renovation. It’s hard work but I would not trade this time with them for anything. If your ceiling has some imperfections use a thick roller to apply a thicker coating of paint, a few extra coats will do the trick, have done this to a friends ceiling it worked a treat, thank you for your highly informative videos, keep up the great videos ,I have learned heaps!

this is good. I removed popcorn ceiling in a house recently. I recommend checking the tape joints after scraping. We found lots of paper tape wasn't secured to the ceiling correctly, or the popcorn removal damaged the bond. We're needing to go back and replace sections of paper tape after paint.

That is a great way to start and get some practice. The best thing I’ll tell you is to give the water time to soak in to the popcorn and dont be afraid to wet it well.
I removed the popcorn ceiling about 2 months ago and have struggled to decide what to do with it. This video makes the steps so easy to complete. I know that any house renovation is a laborious thing. I am going to try with a small portion and see if I can follow your steps to success!!!

Hey there, when I removed the popcorn a strip of tape came down with it as it was loose. Should I put a new strip of tape up then mud the area? Also, part of the ceiling has had a repair (not from me-prior owner) hence the need to remove the popcorn because it looked hideous, what do you suggest to make it look like the rest of the ceiling? Looks great in the end. I just started my popcorn removal project yesterday. Just got done sanding, did NOT skim coat the whole thing like others say to do. Going to prime tonight, paint tomorrow.

Great video. So I had a drywall guy removed my popcorn ceiling . He was supposed to paint my ceiling afterwards. This was a year ago. Today I don't believe he did that. I just repainted my walls and accidentally hit paint here and there on the ceiling. The paint is drying into darker patches. I don't understand why? I touched the rest of the ceiling and the ceiling feels sanded but there's no paint. Now I'm going to have to pave a painter come in to paint the ceiling. I hate when handyman lie about completing a job.
Thank you very much and sorry your having this issue. Its hard to say with out seeing your ceiling but It's possible the darker patches are caused by the paint not adhering properly due to a lack of primer or surface preparation. Hiring a professional painter to assess and repaint the ceiling might be the best solution to ensure a satisfactory outcome.
So just to be clear after I've sanded patched up and sanded again I can start to pain? I don't need to add any kind of mixture to the whole ceiling to cover it before painting?
Hey Sarah if your ceilings came out nice and flat like mine then you don’t need to do a skim cote. I believe that what your asking about. Folks only do skim coats to avoid patching each individual scratch after popcorn removal. But I would recommend priming the ceiling before you paint so you can make sure you found all the imperfections. When you prime you will see any shadows caused by the light around imperfections and you will have a chance to fix them before painting. @@DIYwithMAX Took me a while to remove the popcorn since the previous owners of the home PAINTED over it 😭 I removed the popcorn, sanded, did a layer of joint compound (because the ceiling was rough from all the scuff marks from removal) then I sanded the joint compound, did a layer of paint and realized that I had left a lot of imperfections. So I had to go back with my tiny spackle and go over everything with more joint compound, painted again and it looks good as long as you don't get too close 😁 for my first time it was a good effort, your video did help a lot! Hi Max, thank you for this video. Did you use Dry Dex for covering the wholes or any other spackling? If that is Dry Dex, how do you keep it from hardening once you put it in a tray?
Yes we use dry dex. We add a little water to it if it was getting thick but it has descent working time and I only used it to know exactly when the patches are dry so I can sand and patch again. It speeds up the process and kept us from sanding prematurely and messing up our spackle work.
Mud is just a general name. You can use any spackling mud you would like. The product I used was DryDex Spackling by Dap. It goes on Pink and dries white and the reason I used it was to help me tell when the area is dry so I can start sanding as soon as it dries. Do you cover the room in plastic or anything while doing this? We just got someone to scrape the ceiling, but we're going to have to do some touch up sanding and mudding before priming/painting.
We did not because we were gutting the whole place by if your room is connected to living space you should definitely put up plastic to minimize the dust.
4 mil should holdup just fine in my opinion for the floor and the cheapest you can find for the walls. You can always add some padding to the ladder, like couple old tee shirts on the feet. It’s a little janky but it will work. If you’re using a step stool may be considered getting a piece of plywood that goes under all 4 feet of the stool to display the weight.
I'm doing this job myself and find it's very labor intensive. However, im pressing on. As I scrapped the popcorn off I notice that I was scrapping/tearing the edges of the tape as I was trying to clear the edges of popcorn. Will I need to replace the tape? Also, how should i clean the edges of the ceiling to wall? There are small clumps of debris still attached to the edges of the tape?
Hey I feel your pain. This project is not easy. You will have to remove all the popcorn in the corners how ever it comes off. If it’s damaging the tape that’s ok as all those repairs will have to be completed when you remove popcorn. If you think it would be easier to pull the tape with popcorn on it off and than retape and mud new tape,go for it. This happened to me in the bathroom. There was so much tape damage that it was easier to just pull the tape in the corners and replace it with a new tape and mud coat. Make sure you tape the corners otherwise you will have cracks show up as the builder settles. I hope this was helpful. I recently scrapped off a popcorn ceiling that had been painted and also repaired in spots. I knew the repair spots would be a pain. I was surprised at how I could not get down debris and paint that was attached to the drywall tape all only the edges. What a job - like cement and beyond my skills to repair the edges. I have decided to leave the tape and cover with Polyurethane Crown Moulding that will cover 3 1/4 inches of the ceiling. I sure hope it works.
@clarkkent0909 it will work lol. That’s why we did crown molding on our project. To not have to deal with making the corners perfect. We used wood molding but any properly install molding will have the same desired effect.

Let it dry out completely even if it takes 24 hours sand the ceiling with 200 grit sand paper and mud all the spots and smooth it out best you can. Sand and repeat until you think it’s perfect. Then go over it with a light in the dark room mark and fix any other imperfections mud and sand them. It’s the best way to get it nice and smooth. Very important to keep the fist layer of mud nice and thin to avoid any of the paper bubbling up on you. If it does bubble up just cut it out after it dries and patch those spots. I hope this helps. I would highly recommend not to sand wet/damp sheetrock. If you try to do that you will damage the paper layer and only creat more work for your self. So I let it go because of how hard it was to do it. The drywall is old and even had old leaks on it . What should I do so I do a good job and don't pay for someone to come and do it and finish the project myself. Is my first time doing anything handyman.

This tutorial was really great for the most part, but you did not mention how or at what point to repair the seams / hanging/ ripped / tape or what kind of tape to replace it with!
Thank you for your kinds words and I’m sorry I missed some things that you would have found helpful. I’m glad you reached out in the comments to get a clarification. After scraping the popcorn of the ceiling you will have damages like your describing. At that time you would do the first round of sanding to remove any left over popcorn on the ceiling and in the corners. Once the ceiling is thoroughly cleaned up, that’s when you would start the first coat of spackling of any damaged areas. If you have damage to the tape in the corners, you would use a blade to cut around the damage and remove any peeled up tape. Once that’s complete, you can either use mesh tape or paper tape for spackling to fill the area. They usually come with adhesive backing so they should stick right on. Then you would use the spackle to fill those areas. If you need a detailed description of how to do those repairs, I do have a video on the channel on how to repair sheetrock. We rolled the ceiling 2 coats with primer and then two coats with flat white ceiling paint. I have never had a chance to used a sprayer. I bet it makes life way easier.
Travis, it brakes my heart that you want to add a new texture lol. As far as I know you don’t have to prime before adding new texture. But do make sure that you clean the ceiling to make sure it’s not dusty so you get good adhesion with the new texture. You can use slightly damp sponge or texture brush might work before you use it for texture.

In my condo I did 10 years ago we had 24’ ceilings on a staircase and it certainly did not make things easier lol. But take your time be safe and you will do just fine.
English is not my first language so I just want to clarify. If you are redoing a new modern texture on the ceiling then you don’t have to prime. But if you are making the ceiling flat and smooth then you do have to prime and I would suggest to do it twice and pick a primer with stain block to make sure you don’t end up with any strange stains in the future. Please let me know if you have any further question.
We are overachievers so we primed twice to make sure we got good coverage with Behr primer and painted two coats as well with Behr paint. But we only primed twice because we had really bad lighting so it was hard to tell if we had any missed spots.
If you find the walls are real dusty you should sweep them or wipe them with a clean rag like an old t-shirt. We used a dry swifter mop in the areas that need it. There are no shortcuts in the pursuit of perfect ceilings lol. 😂 I did not even think of that. Have you done it before? I feel like it would add even more sanding because you will have to do the whole ceiling not just spots that have issues.
I would not recommend it. It will be more labor intensive and take more time because you will hav to level the ceiling and it’s not easy with a small orbital sander. It will also creat a lot of dust that you will end up breathing in that is not very good for your health. If your working in a small area like that it will go parity quick using the method I showed in the video when you get in to the grove.

No my units were built in 1992 and the asbestos was band from use in popcorn ceilings in 1977 so if your place is younger than that there is not much to worry about. If it’s older there is a very good chance it does contain asbestos and should be removed by professionals. That’s what I would do in that situation. It’s just not worth the risk In my opinion. If you are really concerned you should get one of those full body suits and the full face respirator and you should be fine sanding also put a large fan in a window it will make a big difference during sanding as well.
They were allowed to use the asbestos popcorn until they used up what they had. Iv'e heard several stories about this and it can possibly be in houses built from 1990 and before. Best to get the test done and be careful not to inhale the dust either way because i believe it has other harmful chemicals also.
What if we don't do mudding after removal popcorn and after sanding? Any problem in that.. Asking because I got contractor who used a sanding machine which removed the popcorn connected to a vacuum which made it like dust less
It maybe possible the your contractor made your ceiling nice and flat if they used a sander to take the popcorn off. You will know after the first coat of primer. Once that pure white primer goes on and dries I would recommend you get up on a ladder with a good flashlight and check for imperfections. Anything you find will most likely be visible in the final finished product. If you have a lot of natural light coming in.

@@DIYwithMAX after I remove popcorn ceiling and then smooth with joint compound how smooth does it have to be after I sand it. I have some waves and uneven spots. I want to go with orange peeling.
I’m not a professional so the advice I’m giving you would be from a point of view of me being in yours situation. It brakes my heart that after all that work you would do a new texture for the next guy lol. If I had to guess I would think that it would hide the imperfections just like your last ceiling texture. @@DIYwithMAX I think this issue was that I didn’t see this video until afterward. I thought I filled and sanded it well but there are lines and small gouges visible under the paint.
If your up to it, you can fix that by doing 200 grit sanding of the whole ceiling and fill in all the imperfections like I showed in the video and painting one or two coats.

Choose a high-quality primer and paint for this important job, preferably a fast-drying acrylic paint rather than an oil-based one. To make sure you are getting the best protection, look for brands that offer a "bath paint" developed specifically with ingredients such as mildewcide.

Hey there, when I removed the popcorn a strip of tape came down with it as it was loose. Should I put a new strip of tape up then mud the area? Also, part of the ceiling has had a repair (not from me-prior owner) hence the need to remove the popcorn because it looked hideous, what do you suggest to make it look like the rest of the ceiling? What is the purple mod brand ?
It a product called “Dap 12328 DryDex Spackling Interior/Exterior” it helps you see when it is fully dry. So it goes on pink and dries white.
How did it turn out without mudding the whole ceiling?
A good tip is to add yellow chalk to your mud for touch up sanding so you can see where it is once it’s dry 👍🏻

Great video. So I had a drywall guy removed my popcorn ceiling . He was supposed to paint my ceiling afterwards. This was a year ago. Today I don't believe he did that. I just repainted my walls and accidentally hit paint here and there on the ceiling. The paint is drying into darker patches. I don't understand why?
I touched the rest of the ceiling and the ceiling feels sanded but there's no paint. Now I'm going to have to pave a painter come in to paint the ceiling. I hate when handyman lie about completing a job.
Thank you very much and sorry your having this issue. Its hard to say with out seeing your ceiling but It's possible the darker patches are caused by the paint not adhering properly due to a lack of primer or surface preparation. Hiring a professional painter to assess and repaint the ceiling might be the best solution to ensure a satisfactory outcome.
So just to be clear after I've sanded patched up and sanded again I can start to pain? I don't need to add any kind of mixture to the whole ceiling to cover it before painting?
Hey Sarah if your ceilings came out nice and flat like mine then you don’t need to do a skim cote. I believe that what your asking about. Folks only do skim coats to avoid patching each individual scratch after popcorn removal. But I would recommend priming the ceiling before you paint so you can make sure you found all the imperfections. When you prime you will see any shadows caused by the light around imperfections and you will have a chance to fix them before painting. @@DIYwithMAX Took me a while to remove the popcorn since the previous owners of the home PAINTED over it 😭
I removed the popcorn, sanded, did a layer of joint compound (because the ceiling was rough from all the scuff marks from removal) then I sanded the joint compound, did a layer of paint and realized that I had left a lot of imperfections. So I had to go back with my tiny spackle and go over everything with more joint compound, painted again and it looks good as long as you don't get too close 😁 for my first time it was a good effort, your video did help a lot! Thank you.

Hi Max, thank you for this video. Did you use Dry Dex for covering the wholes or any other spackling? If that is Dry Dex, how do you keep it from hardening once you put it in a tray?
Yes we use dry dex. We add a little water to it if it was getting thick but it has descent working time and I only used it to know exactly when the patches are dry so I can sand and patch again. It speeds up the process and kept us from sanding prematurely and messing up our spackle work.

You mentioned the mud. Is there a particular mud I should get? Is it just called mud at the store?
Mud is just a general name. You can use any spackling mud you would like. The product I used was DryDex Spackling by Dap. It goes on Pink and dries white and the reason I used it was to help me tell when the area is dry so I can start sanding as soon as it dries. Do you cover the room in plastic or anything while doing this? We just got someone to scrape the ceiling, but we're going to have to do some touch up sanding and mudding before priming/painting.
We did not because we were gutting the whole place by if your room is connected to living space you should definitely put up plastic to minimize the dust.
@@DIYwithMAX What mil plastic do you recommend for the floor, because I don't want it to tear while we're moving around and placing a step stool?
4 mil should holdup just fine in my opinion for the floor and the cheapest you can find for the walls. You can always add some padding to the ladder, like couple old tee shirts on the feet. It’s a little janky but it will work. If you’re using a step stool may be considered getting a piece of plywood that goes under all 4 feet of the stool to display the weight.

I'm doing this job myself and find it's very labor intensive. However, im pressing on. As I scrapped the popcorn off I notice that I was scrapping/tearing the edges of the tape as I was trying to clear the edges of popcorn. Will I need to replace the tape? Also, how should i clean the edges of the ceiling to wall? There are small clumps of debris still attached to the edges of the tape?
Hey I feel your pain. This project is not easy. You will have to remove all the popcorn in the corners how ever it comes off. If it’s damaging the tape that’s ok as all those repairs will have to be completed when you remove popcorn. If you think it would be easier to pull the tape with popcorn on it off and than retape and mud new tape,go for it. This happened to me in the bathroom. There was so much tape damage that it was easier to just pull the tape in the corners and replace it with a new tape and mud coat. Make sure you tape the corners otherwise you will have cracks show up as the builder settles. I hope this was helpful. I recently scrapped off a popcorn ceiling that had been painted and also repaired in spots. I knew the repair spots would be a pain. I was surprised at how I could not get down debris and paint that was attached to the drywall tape all only the edges. What a job - like cement and beyond my skills to repair the edges. I have decided to leave the tape and cover with Polyurethane Crown Moulding that will cover 3 1/4 inches of the ceiling. I sure hope it works.
@clarkkent0909 it will work lol. That’s why we did crown molding on our project. To not have to deal with making the corners perfect. We used wood molding but any properly install molding will have the same desired effect.

I scraped and penetrated past the brown paper on some areas on drywall. How do I smooth it out?
Let it dry out completely even if it takes 24 hours sand the ceiling with 200 grit sand paper and mud all the spots and smooth it out best you can. Sand and repeat until you think it’s perfect. Then go over it with a light in the dark room mark and fix any other imperfections mud and sand them. It’s the best way to get it nice and smooth. Very important to keep the fist layer of mud nice and thin to avoid any of the paper bubbling up on you. If it does bubble up just cut it out after it dries and patch those spots. I hope this helps. Can you start sanding immediately after scraping the popcorn off? Or should you wait for the ceiling to dry?
I would highly recommend not to sand wet/damp sheetrock. If you try to do that you will damage the paper layer and only creat more work for your self. You are welcome. I took the popcorn away and when I was trying to paint it , the paint was coming off of with stripes and paint was bubbling. So I let it go because of how hard it was to do it. The drywall is old and even had old leaks on it . What should I do so I do a good job and don't pay for someone to come and do it and finish the project myself. Is my first time doing anything handyman.

This tutorial was really great for the most part, but you did not mention how or at what point to repair the seams / hanging/ ripped / tape or what kind of tape to replace it with!
Thank you for your kinds words and I’m sorry I missed some things that you would have found helpful. I’m glad you reached out in the comments to get a clarification. After scraping the popcorn of the ceiling you will have damages like your describing. At that time you would do the first round of sanding to remove any left over popcorn on the ceiling and in the corners. Once the ceiling is thoroughly cleaned up, that’s when you would start the first coat of spackling of any damaged areas. If you have damage to the tape in the corners, you would use a blade to cut around the damage and remove any peeled up tape. Once that’s complete, you can either use mesh tape or paper tape for spackling to fill the area. They usually come with adhesive backing so they should stick right on. Then you would use the spackle to fill those areas. If you need a detailed description of how to do those repairs, I do have a video on the channel on how to repair sheetrock. Did you roll or spray the ceiling with paint ?
We rolled the ceiling 2 coats with primer and then two coats with flat white ceiling paint. I have never had a chance to used a sprayer. I bet it makes life way easier.

Travis, it brakes my heart that you want to add a new texture lol. As far as I know you don’t have to prime before adding new texture. But do make sure that you clean the ceiling to make sure it’s not dusty so you get good adhesion with the new texture. You can use slightly damp sponge or texture brush might work before you use it for texture.

In my condo I did 10 years ago we had 24’ ceilings on a staircase and it certainly did not make things easier lol. But take your time be safe and you will do just fine.
English is not my first language so I just want to clarify. If you are redoing a new modern texture on the ceiling then you don’t have to prime. But if you are making the ceiling flat and smooth then you do have to prime and I would suggest to do it twice and pick a primer with stain block to make sure you don’t end up with any strange stains in the future. Please let me know if you have any further question.
After this did you prime with kilz then paint?
We are overachievers so we primed twice to make sure we got good coverage with Behr primer and painted two coats as well with Behr paint. But we only primed twice because we had really bad lighting so it was hard to tell if we had any missed spots.

If you find the walls are real dusty you should sweep them or wipe them with a clean rag like an old t-shirt. We used a dry swifter mop in the areas that need it. Why you didn’t just take a paint roller and scam coat the whole ceiling with a thin coat of drywall mud evenly and smooth to do less sanding
There are no shortcuts in the pursuit of perfect ceilings lol. 😂 I did not even think of that. Have you done it before? I feel like it would add even more sanding because you will have to do the whole ceiling not just spots that have issues.

can i use an orbital sander? and if so what grit paper? It is for the ceiling of a small bathroom.
I would not recommend it. It will be more labor intensive and take more time because you will hav to level the ceiling and it’s not easy with a small orbital sander. It will also creat a lot of dust that you will end up breathing in that is not very good for your health. If your working in a small area like that it will go parity quick using the method I showed in the video when you get in to the grove.

No my units were built in 1992 and the asbestos was band from use in popcorn ceilings in 1977 so if your place is younger than that there is not much to worry about. If it’s older there is a very good chance it does contain asbestos and should be removed by professionals. That’s what I would do in that situation. It’s just not worth the risk In my opinion. If you are really concerned you should get one of those full body suits and the full face respirator and you should be fine sanding also put a large fan in a window it will make a big difference during sanding as well.
They were allowed to use the asbestos popcorn until they used up what they had. Iv'e heard several stories about this and it can possibly be in houses built from 1990 and before. Best to get the test done and be careful not to inhale the dust either way because i believe it has other harmful chemicals also.

What if we don't do mudding after removal popcorn and after sanding?

Asking because I got contractor who used a sanding machine which removed the popcorn connected to a vacuum which made it like dust less
It maybe possible the your contractor made your ceiling nice and flat if they used a sander to take the popcorn off. You will know after the first coat of primer. Once that pure white primer goes on and dries I would recommend you get up on a ladder with a good flashlight and check for imperfections. Anything you find will most likely be visible in the final finished product. If you have a lot of natural light coming in.

@@DIYwithMAX after I remove popcorn ceiling and then smooth with joint compound how smooth does it have to be after I sand it. I have some waves and uneven spots. I want to go with orange peeling.
I’m not a professional so the advice I’m giving you would be from a point of view of me being in yours situation. It brakes my heart that after all that work you would do a new texture for the next guy lol. If I had to guess I would think that it would hide the imperfections just like your last ceiling texture. @@DIYwithMAX I think this issue was that I didn’t see this video until afterward. I thought I filled and sanded it well but there are lines and small gouges visible under the paint.
If your up to it, you can fix that by doing 200 grit sanding of the whole ceiling and fill in all the imperfections like I showed in the video and painting one or two coats.
The process sucks but it is doable. When you did your removal did you get down to the Sheetrock?

You don't replaster the ceiling after removing the popcorn?
Nope. Just got it down to the sheet rock and went around patched all the damage caused by the scraper. Sanded smooth and painted.

Choose a high-quality primer and paint for this important job, preferably a fast-drying acrylic paint rather than an oil-based one. To make sure you are getting the best protection, look for brands that offer a "bath paint" developed specifically with ingredients such as mildewcide.
