So we went to review Katz Delicatessen and their famous pastrami sandwich and our thoughts were it was overpriced and overrated. If you are a tourist in New York City, then beware. Katz,s was just a good reasonably priced deli until "when Harry met Sally"..then it became a tourist destination. Edit: Rents in New York are so out of control that ‘When Harry Met Sally’ probably saved Katz’s from becoming a Citibank. Guess you take the good with the not so good.

    I went there 5 months ago for the first time and honestly, a bit of a letdown. Not so much because of the money, but the corned beef sandwich just wasn't that great, almost surprisingly so, considering all the hype. It's actually very thick and chunky, not thin sliced at all really and all sandwiches like this( French dip sandwiches, corned beef, pastrami) should really be thin sliced, those taste the best and are the most flavorful. It was still a bit expensive. And contrary to what people are saying, they do accept both cards and money, they have a separate place in the back for taking cards and up front by the entrance they take cash. Most important thing, don't lose the ticket they give you when you walk in for any reason, you give it back to them when you pay and leave, $50 charge if you lose the ticket for any reason, so hold on to it no matter what. Also lastly, if you really want to get the "real" NY sandwich,go to Sarges Deli,bar none,the best,miles above Katz's.

    Look at the line outside the place, Katz is a great place. Who the heck is comparing this to Bens deli? Are you insane? No comparison. But you are going to pay for it. Katz is a nice treat when visiting the City. I’m not sure who wants to visit NYC anymore. But Katz’s is a historical hot spot.

    Still but a teenager in 1965 I moved to New York into a 4-floor walk-up just a little further east of Katz’s. One day I stepped into the deli, my first visit, and ordered a roast beef on rye. The big ruddy-faced man behind the counter wearing a butchers’ apron and a little round cap balanced upon his giant head sliced the beef and assembled a most beautiful sandwich. I eyed his masterpiece and asked, “Got any catsup?”. His already ruddy complexion turned bright red barely holding back his anger, “We AIN’T GOT NO CATSUP!” That was the day I learned that you never should defile a most perfect roast beef sandwich with catsup.

    Another great review, production and presentation. You're absolutely spot on. I live in Manhattan and go to Katz's twice a year. Still the best pastrami sandwich in NYC. Yes, the prices are high, but so are delis like Pastrami Queen, 2nd Avenue Deli, Ben's, and Mendy's. Sarge's is the most reasonable but still high. That said, pastrami is expensive to produce.
    I can't even fathom how much Katz's pastrami sandwich would cost if the family didn't own the property?

      I knew Abe from sometime between 1954 and 1957 (I was VERY young). My late father was an insurance broker and sold Abe the policy for the original part of the original location on Second Ave.
      There was only ever one clue in the murder: The same gun was used in a murder in Yonkers. By now the perp is probably either dead or in prison for something else.
      My family used to eat there every Sunday, on the way back from visiting my grandmother in Bensonhurst. I feel guilty for not getting to the 33rd St. location more often.

    Comparatively, I ate at a salt beef sandwich Beigel Bakery on Brick Ln this past Aug and can honestly say it didn’t compare to Katz’s corned beef. Don’t get me wrong, I liked it and it was a bargain but it fell short of a Harold’s or Katz’s sandwich and not having seating and a line outside didn’t make it an experience one gets at Katz’s either. Again, I really liked Brick Lane and my culinary experience in London (cannot get over a private dinner party at F&M, then a private tour of the closed store) and hope to return to London again soon!

    Very fair review. I think I would have rated it even a little lower. Second Avenue Deli has better Pastrami as does other places around the city. When you're staying at Martin's in Long Beach, ask him to take you to Lido Kosher. It's much cheaper than Katz mostly because it's not a tourist trap. Also, I know you love Root Beer, so do I but try Cel-Rey Soda. It's very different taste and an acquired taste but it's the perfect soda to go with Kosher and Kosher style deli. Great job yet again!

    Katz's was famous long before "When Harry Met Sally".
    Pastrami is always overly-expensive. Delis have somehow managed to create a mystique about the brining, the smoking, the steaming, and even, absurdly enough, the slicing!
    If you ever get to Montreal, try Schwartz's Deli's Montreal Smoked Meat. It's almost as expensive, but has a more distinct flavour and is more succulent. Make sure you get "medium-fat", or "fat" though...all deli meat is inedible if you ask for "lean".
    P.S.: The bagels are better in Montreal too...St. Urbain.

      In I'm going to try to be very delicate with my wording. Because I don't want to be accused of something I am not but you will find that the Mystique about the pastrami is only ever in big cities with a decent demographic of God's chosen people
      By the way I hope you appreciate the irony of saying how ridiculous it is to mystify Pastrami and corned beef and then you go on to say where people should go to get these things.

    • @msbrownbeast
      @msbrownbeast 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Schwartz's is nowhere near the prices at Katz's. Their sandwich is slightly smaller than Kat'z and does not come with that little piece of pickle (which is worth very little). The price of a Schwartz smoked meat sandwich is around $15 - $16 CAD (including taxes). Katz's is at least $25 USD plus tax so that comes to about $35 CAD ! So about 1/2 the price (taking the smaller size and little pickle into consideration.
      Taste-wise, Schwartz's is very good - but they run hot and cold. Sometimes the meat would be overly dry. IMHO, in Montreal, Schwartz's
      is not the best place for smoked meat (mainly due to their inconsistency), there are several other joints offering great stuff (e.g. The Main Deli, Smoked Meat Pete).

    • @YASTravelsEatsWell
      @YASTravelsEatsWell 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      You're right on! I've been to Schwartzs many times. I always look for a different restaurant to see if it matches Schwartz. My cousin from Montreal keeps me updated! Overall, Schwatzs still is most consistent. There's a newish place b on the West Island that's getting some great reviews, don't remember the name! When it comes to bagels St. Urbain Bagels ships to the USA via Goldbelly. However, I've found several outstanding bagel shops in Outremont!

However, if you want to pay with a credit card (including contactless), there’s a special register by the beverages where someone can ring you up too. It was very famous way before Harry Met Sally and that's such a third level association with the place. It is what it is. Cash? So what?? Its a once a year visit knowing ahead of time its expensive. Bring cash (but I believe they take credit cards and you are not correct about that.) Forget When Harry Met Sally. Nobody cares about that when they think Katz's in NYC. Its the history, a place to visit once a year, very NYC ....just a historic place despite the overpriced sandwiches. Everything in the restaurant world...post pandemic...is EXPENSIVE!

    I have been to the top “deli’s” and Katz’s is the best. People complain about the cost, but they give you more than twice the meat than other del’s, and they give you pickles at no extra charge.if you notice the cutter sliced the pastrami and put on the plate so that you can taste, so that you are satisfied before he makes the sandwich. Put a nice tip in his cup and he will add some more pastrami.
    My drink of choice is Dr Brown’s Cel-ray Tonic, or Cream Soda.

    2nd Ave Deli on 33rd is about 23 bucks for their pastrami so it's right up there. Epstein's up in Westchester is about 15 bucks, so if you want pastrami or corned beef your going to pay. But even Mickey D's is over 10 bucks for a large meal so I'd rather spend the money on a huge pastrami sandwich that might do for 2 meals.

    Glad you enjoyed the best pastrami sandwich in the world. They are cash only so as to avoid paying credit card companies a fee for using their service. Who cares about convenience for the customer, when there is always a line out the door? I agree that is it way overpriced, though (but not overrated!). Still, I don't know what you did to pay $40+ dollars - this sandwich is $22.95 and a soda is about $2.50 more. Also keep in mind that this sandwich is big enough to feed two people.

      To each his own but this wasn’t the best pastrami sandwich I’d ever had. It was really good, but not the best. And they really threw me off when they put my Reuben in the microwave. A $25 sandwich should go nowhere near a microwave. All in all it was a good meal and I’d recommend people try it for themselves but I was expecting better. I’d give it a 7.5 based on the two sandwiches I had.

    Yeah it’s pricey but look at the amount of pastrami between the bread, you could fill 5 sandwiches from Pret with that meat. 8/10, I hate the tipping thing as well, they take it for granted they should get a tip because the tight ass owners pay them a pittance. ( worked in NYC for 12 years)

I think the discourage this, and won’t point it out unless you specifically ask for it. if you go to the front register, they won’t volunteer this information.
