This is an excellent performance. It makes very clear this music’s not-so-subtle relationship to the genre of folk-tale set musically by Stravinsky in L’Histoire du Soldat, together with a million jokes Ravel throws in for good measure, and Kuusisto even overrides Ravel’s letter sometimes to arrive at their spirit. Both players’ technical standards are exemplary and I hear the ghost of Horowitz nodding in approval, as he put it: “Concerts should be entertainments, not lectures.” It’s not easy to make literary messages clear without becoming cerebral-ultimately this performance shows deeper understanding than more orthodox interpretations.
