This is basically a 2 row repeat. One of the rows is chains separated by scs; the other row is sets of (2dc-ch1-2dc). It's hard to start but once you get the rhythm it gets easier. This particular one uses 3 colors, which does complicate things; it's easier to do if you use just 2 colors, 2 rows of one color and 2 rows of the other. You get a double sided fabric that shows both colors but one will dominate, and it's gorgeous. It is thick though so try to work loosely, maybe go up a hook size. (I made a 2 color version of this, many years ago, in red and white; it was beautiful.) I hope that helps.
Thanks for explaining this. My aunt used to make baby/reversible afghans like this. Now I can see how she did it. She only used two colors, so one side would be color 1 and the other side color 2. Stunning!
Thank you. I have to comment though that the initial pic was using four colours at the same time, as that is what was shown. A little misleading. Also it would be very helpful if the finished product was shown right from the beginning. I do enjoy your videos.

I’m Japanese. I don’t know whether this is a Japanese crochet pattern or not,but I think white, green and pink colors are similar to “hishimochi” or “dango”(Japanese food). And it is so amazing that this pattern looks 5-D!! I will buy yarns and do this right now.
Ah yes, crochet with the five dimensions; point, line, space, time, and velocity. 😂 Jokes aside, this is a beautiful pattern, and I bet it feels amazing to the touch! Thank you so much for sharing!
This is beautiful, and you did a fabulous job of showing each step, keeping a slow and steady pace for us so it is easy to follow along. I think that once people actually crochet along with you they will realize that it's quite easy after all! 💚🙏🕊
Just beautiful. Your method was easy to follow. I’ve got almost every stitch written out. Almost there. I love working with smaller hooks & this yarn. Thank you❤
Reminds me a lot of the reversible crochet patterns I've seen/done in my 20 years crocheting. 411, I also have a LOT of books from the early 1900s that were passed down to me from my great grandmother. I have some handwritten patterns from my great great grandmother back from the mid to late 1800s.
Did the books have any sewing patterns? I had a beautiful round plump dusty pink satin cushion that had concertina material kind of folded over on each fold over a bit of the next fold, sort of like a fan effect & gathered in the center with a satin round button (that doesn't actually describe it very well & im not sure if you know what i mean or what the pattern would be called) but it was so old & delicate the material started falling apart & very old small loose foam was falling out & couldn't even salvage the satin to try to unpick it to try & see how some very talented lady made it with a lot of love. I really loved the way it looked & miss the old ways & the beautiful crafts that we don't see much of anymore. PS I subscribed to your utube channel :) cheerio from Australia 🇦🇺

over 15 minutes for a basic overlapping shell stitch... I'm confused and a bit disappointed. but if 5D implies that this stitch is textured and also transcends time and space it may not be entirely wrong, since it's presented as a Japanese novelty, but was actually quite common in the 50s and 60s here in Italy 😅
That was truly zen. I love crochet, but I always tightened up until it was a mess. Didn’t pursue it. Watching you crochet is very calming and satisfying. Thank you. 💛
@catmom Jewett - crochet is the thing that calms me down (and perhaps a glass of wine🍷) Ten minutes later an hour has gone by and my mood has become calm again. 🥰
I'm so jealous of how consistently you can crochet! Like, my chain stitches are always one big mess, they tighten up too much so I can never crochet into them again
I have the same issue. The thing that’s helped me is to be conscious with loosening my tension. I’ll pause after every 5 or 10 chains to relax my hands and keep going.
You just need stiffer yarn. Frilly stuff is pretty all balled up but if you are free styling or looking for a uniform pattern then it’s just a matter of proper density + hook size. Plus chain stitches don’t mean anything, they blend in after the second row.
One thing that helped me immensely before I cracked the chain tension mystery was to gauge up one or two hook sizes for my base starting chain, then switch to the recommended size hook. This keeps your foundation chain nice and loose so you can easily crochet into it with the smaller hook!
You can actually get a tool online (or in a local craft store depending on your location) that helps you with your tension. It's a ring that you wear on your pointer finger that you thread the yarn through before you start crocheting. Most of the rings are cute enough to wear just for the fun of it! They aren't that expensive. Just search for "tension ring" or "yarn guide ring," and you should find something that works for you. I used to have super tight stitches as well. In fact, I still struggle with this sometimes (don't crochet when you're angry...lol). The above comments give a lot of good advice to solve this problem, too. 😊
It's "just" a 2 row repeat, but it surely is quite intricate. Thank you for the tutorial. Although I don't see myself doing this, I know someone out there will. Please keep posting your beautiful creations!

You're on TH-cam! You can learn almost anything. In the TH-cam search function, search for "Crochet for absolute beginners." Get a skein of inexpensive acrylic yarn in a medium weight (look for a "4" on the label) and buy a cheap, aluminum crochet hook in size 4.5mm or 5mm. Then just follow along and don't get frustrated before you've learned to do a simple rectangle of basic stitches with fairly even sides and not-too-tight stitches. It takes some practice, but once you learn the basics - they are easy! - you will love it!
@@stluanne Sounds so easy when you tell like this ☺ When I was at school we (tried) to crochet a square pot holder. Mine end up looking like a kippah 😆
I looked at your shop & I could not find this particular pattern. I think this is very pretty and inventive. I’m sorry there are so many disparaging comments here. 🥺😢
So, a modified shell stitch. How do you deal with all the ends of the yarns? Do you cut them, or run them up the side? If you run the ends up the side, how do you finish the sides so that these loose strands don't catch on everything? It's a very pretty pattern, but these finishing steps are always on my mind. Having been a crocheter since the age of 8, dealing with strands and edges are very much part of a patterns' finished look.
I cut off the colored ones, not the white ones. When I cut off, I carefully hide the ends of the threads with a needle. I tie the edges with single crochets, then you can tie any border. I do not know English well, I use a translator.
I bring the ones dropped up the border when I have had more than one color skein. And when an end has to be cut I run it across the row to crochet. Once a border is around it all, it helps hide all. Any sewn in ends I find easier to use a large plastic needle. There is a product as well to help keep ends stay hidden. I take the skeins and start making a ball, to assure not knots or weak places before I start. Plus it’s just easier in the long run. If you think you can find a piece of the yarn you put in a border later, that yarn can be used to mend it later on if need be. Learned tips from old crochet magazines.
The 3 Dimensions are clear the 4th dimension is in time you can't get the time back that u used to see this vid. And 5th dimension might be in your purse for the money spent if you buy a pattern ...
Well there's the 3 geospatial coordinates, one time stamp, and ... the 5th dimension must be complexity? Or is it a measurement of utility vs artistry?
@@zoe0640 The fifth dimension is thought to be how gravity and electromagnetism interact. It is not detectable by humans. Maybe there is an electromagnetic current running through the crochet hook, and the ball of yarn is creating the gravitational field. That interaction is creating the movement in the crocheter's hands, and the pattern is the result. Makes perfect sense, right?? XD

It’s really just double crochets and chain stitches. It’s not too hard, just different placement. Really cool stitch, I can’t wait to try it out!

This is stunning and the colors are gorgeous. Thank you for sharing!
I’m sure the tutorial is great, but the music was so relaxing I actually fell asleep
Oh wow, I could actually do this! Very interesting and clearly presented. Thank you for sharing.
Really nice technique. I’m so impressed. Makes me want to study your techniques and try harder to improve my own. ❤
Wow, thats beautiful! Will definitely give this a shot!
Beautiful! Love it and thank you for sharing
Beautiful! Definitely going to try this stitch out. And I guess I'm the odd one out here because I loved the music 🤷🏻♀️
Same! At most it’s a bit repetitive, but overall I was just vibing to it.
I wasn't convinced since its mostly granny stitches until seeing the finished product
I am so confused but so happy to be confused, this is amazing ❤❤❤
That pattern is gorgeous, but geeze my skills aren't that good.
HOW is this 5D???
So, a modified shell stitch. How do you deal with all the ends of the yarns? Do you cut them, or run them up the side? If you run the ends up the side, how do you finish the sides so that these loose strands don't catch on everything?
It's a very pretty pattern, but these finishing steps are always on my mind. Having been a crocheter since the age of 8, dealing with strands and edges are very much part of a patterns' finished look.
you've crocheted since you were 8 and you dont know how to weave in the ends and add a border of your choosing?
@@rhawniegonzales7568 yeah - confused me too - can't figure it out for yourself? #What
I cut off the colored ones, not the white ones.
I need the full repetitions, thank you !!❤❤❤💋💋💋
The music 🎶 is a bit annoying. I had to watch it with the volume down.
I’m sorry……. What? When ppl create new stitches do they just stick their hook in different parts of the work and see what happens?
Yes. I do that but with patterns.
Freeform crochet
...how else are new stitches supposed to be made?
Pretty much!!
Excellent demonstration. So easy to follow.
Thank you!
Que hermoso trabajo, aprendo mucho y siempre técnicas nuevas.. gracias!! 🇦🇷🙏

Good vid. Easy to follow 👍
LOVE the background music 💖
Thank you!
That would make a good wallet or purse fabric. Or a mat. Something that needs to be sturdy
🥰🥰
This is beautiful! Thanks for sharing it.

Thank you!
...sehe Dich zum ersten Mal.
Häkel selbst auch...
Eine wundervolle Arbeit!
Vielen Dank dafür.
It's a lovely stich. But WHY is it 5d? What makes it so...?
The 3 Dimensions are clear the 4th dimension is in time you can't get the time back that u used to see this vid.
And 5th dimension might be in your purse for the money spent if you buy a pattern ...
@@McFraser_handcrafted_stuff I want to upvote this more than once OMG HA
Those thumbnails are si deceptive. You think you get something very unusual ... it's pretty but it's never what you suggest.
That's really cool, but how is it 5D?
Well there's the 3 geospatial coordinates, one time stamp, and ... the 5th dimension must be complexity? Or is it a measurement of utility vs artistry?
@@zoe0640 The fifth dimension is thought to be how gravity and electromagnetism interact. It is not detectable by humans.
Maybe there is an electromagnetic current running through the crochet hook, and the ball of yarn is creating the gravitational field. That interaction is creating the movement in the crocheter's hands, and the pattern is the result. Makes perfect sense, right?? XD
You have to use the right hook
