  • Your intrepid tonehounds compare two excellent modern boutique replicas with a real 'burst. An old school Bob & Ramon show, longer but hopefully entertaining and informative.

    All 3 guitars sounded spectacular. As a Stigg owner myself i can confirm how incredibly good they are. And Alan Dingwall makes some of the very best pickups that you can buy.

    Interesting video. I am a long time LP lover and recently, for the first time, went down the custom shop road. I sold a couple of guitars and bought a murphy lab 59 reissue in dirty lemon. Looks and sounds like these guitars. It's much brighter than my standard USA models and has a certain honk to it. Not sure it was worth the money but luckily I got a good deal. I will be sure not to put tape on the neck!! Cheers guys, great playing

    It's fantastic that there are guitars that get so close to the real thing. I hope the gap continues to narrow. Can't tell you how many guitars I have been through trying to chase that sound... Eventually I relented & started buying the original 50's/60's models & have not looked back.

      Addendum. For me as the real ‘burst owner, these guitars feel quite like a ‘burst, probably as close as I’ve seen amongst numerous replicas. Their greatest strength is the middle position sounds, which are the closest I’ve found to the range of tones Peter Green was able to dial up on his. It was really uncanny being in the room as Ramon mixed between the sounds. That’s as much or more down to the Alan Dingwall pickups. My ‘unmolested’ ‘burst doesn’t really do those sounds, it has its own voices.

    • @Guitar5986
      @Guitar5986 5 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@thebobandramonshowThat is a very good point. The "stereotypical" tones of a Les Paul or a Tele are attainable with the unmolested original examples. But if you want to cover different ground (à la Peter Green, Roy Buchanon, etc) then you either need a players grade example to monkey with or a very good replica. I specifically have a very good replica Korina V for Albert King or Lonnie Mack. Most importantly, those who cannot afford to horse trade in the originals can at least have very good alternatives in select modern examples. And even those of us who can afford the originals are maybe still out of shooting range for something like an original V or an Explorer. Thank you guys for shining a light on these guitar builders & pickup winders who are making such exceptional products.

    Well, I think Gibson can make a good guitar. I think with the current leadership they are doing a good job. Normally they fall down on the electronics. The pickups and pots etc. I have had several good recent gibsons but I have to change the pickups and pots, the bridge etc. but I do prefer my vintage guitars better. I have a 2007 R9 with a make over and Mr Dingwall greenies and it sounds better than my real deal ‘57 gold top

  • @tonyfafoglia2927
    @tonyfafoglia2927 5 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

    The real 58 is mellower sounding with a nice bloom than the Daniels which is seems more articulate and may be preferable to the original in some ways. The main problem with replicating a 58-60 Gibson LPs(or any vintage era Gibson) today is the lack of old growth of Honduras Mahogony and Maple available today. I think in general Pickup makers have gotten very good in replicating old style PU's.I believe the woods and construction are what make these guitars special. I'm old enough and have been fortunate to be able to play a number of 50's and early 60's Gibsons and Fenders. 50's LP's seem to have a clarity and depth of tone that the modern production guitars seem to lack. That being said what is often forgotten is that Clapton, Green and Taylor ect. at their peaks would sound brilliant on any guitar they picked up mosy likely.

    Heya guys, always love watching your videos - I was gonna mention, when you get to play all these bursts - is it worth making a dry recording into a daw using something like a strymon riverside in front, or, using neural dsp so that you then have a reference library of recorded burst tones all in the same conditions, appreciate it’s not the same as a valve amp

    • @thebobandramonshow

      Good idea. It’s normally the audio tech that lets us down, so our sound is sometimes a bit lacking.

    in the words of brother dave simpson...these guitars you guys are playing are "disgustingly gorgeous"!
    are the pups "staggered" in height? i couldnt really tell...peter always had the bass side sunk and the treble side raised on greeny...
    i have a few budget LP clones that i did the "greeny mod" on and they are pretty convincing...staggerd pup height plus the out of phase thing!

    • @thebobandramonshow

      Pickup heights we’e certainly staggered for balance (bridge higher) but I don’t recall any serious side to side tilt. Nice replicas both and the middle position on the Dingwall pickups the most convincing I’ve heard yet. Thanks for watching, stay with us!

    I’ve been on a Holy Grail quest for a Gibson les paul for a very very long time, as Bob mentioned not all real 59 bursts are equal some sound and feel fantastic and some just plainly “Don’t”…. Ramon has stated with his 8.4 lbs 59 Daniel burst it’s the feel of the guitar and once you connect with a guitar, the guitar becomes a part of us, it becomes a part of our DNA and some say our Soul … Back to the story, l’ve finally found my HOLY GRAIL a MURPHY LAB Les Paul Late 2021 it’s a part of my DNA now and to all the Gibson knockers out there like Bob said there’s good and bad in all makes and models So please stop bagging Gibson and since Caesar took over, GIBSON has been making phenomenal Guitars …. Bob just a side-note !! Bonamassa l think in the last few years did buy an uncirculated 59 Burst while touring around England it’s on TH-cam, Bonamassa had no problems flying his new acquisition back to the States, so it shouldn’t be a problem if you really wanted to sell your 58 however from what l’ve seen that 58 is truly apart of your Soul now and l hope you never sell it, Love every video you make with that 58 …..

    • @thebobandramonshow
      @thebobandramonshow  6 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Thank you, you’re right. I’ve played some superb but also some quite ordinary ‘bursts. I’m always on the lookout to be impressed by a modern Gibson but haven’t been like I have with my recent cheapie Squiers or my Epi JB Treasure ‘64 Firebird reissue. Maybe one day, I’m hopeful.
