    Simeon, I grew up on a farm in the American south and one of the hardest lessons taught me by my dad was that "you do not name food". The piglet i raised for a class project was also sent to slaughter with the rest when the time came. I have enjoyed Sally's escapades from the start but you are operating a farm and must do the right thing for the herd and for your family. But I really do hope she can calf. Thanks

    I love the way the bull was smelling the air as you drove in. LOL "hmmm, Ladies!" I have a soft spot for bulls. One saved my life when I was a kid and ever since I seem to get along with them. One could say he left his stamp on me. They are wonderful creatures.
    Sally is a lovely cow, it would be a shame if she is hmmm, freemartin (I think that's the term). I remember Uncle Paul had a female like that, something about the birth, can't remember what, she was great with the sheep so he kept her a long time and she never had a calf. The sheep liked her. It looks like you have the beginning of a nice herd there. Stay safe.

    Much respect to that "old farmer"!! Sounds like he has some valid experience and I would certainly be inclined to trust his guidance, Simeon. I liked the way he followed his bull into the field; showed he definitely has a good relationship with the big fellow. Good, too, that the bull has a calm temperament. Sitting down with and picking that gentleman's brain would be time well spent, I think!!!

    Back in 1973 4 friends and I broke down in Mississippi and we met a couple young fellas that said if we could lay a hand on one of their cows they'd give us $20 to help us out. We chased those Highlander cows for a hour and never come close to putting a finger on one! They can run!! Farmers had a good laugh at the Yankees and still paid us the $20 !! Great people and awesome cattle!! This video brought the memory back, thank you!! Stupid crap youthdoes.

    She probably is a freemartin. This happens when the mother cow carries twins and one is male and the other is female. The hormones from the male calf affect the female. She is a good beef animal though she will never breed or carry a calf. Good luck.

    I once saw a documentary about a Russian trapper, he said he could have raised animals for food but he chose to trap his meat instead, mainly because when trapping game at least they have a chance to get away. Wild animals know they're being hunted and are always on the alert. A farm raised animal doesn't expect a bullet to the head from his trusted farmer...seem unfair to fool the animal into trusting you and then bam lights out.

    Freemartin would be the term used in America. Over here, there are a couple of different ways a person can test if an animal is a freemartin, without waiting nine months to see if she has a calf. One is a blood test-is that an option in Sweden?

    Wow that's great. The cows were so excited to discover and sniff the bull. They adopted their new member just immediately, like the bull s body tells : "I am at home here". On the other hand Sally is: maybe the term can be pseudohermaphrodite. I quite believe the respected farmer that Sally should not stay in a reproductive herd. "Of course get her chance is always possible, but if no calf next year there is a need get her slaughter. This is the rule of farmer, wheather the farm is hobby or big size - "farm animals NEVER NEVER NEVER can be pets.

    • @xenonram
      @xenonram 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Adela Lukáčová If he wants to keep her as a pet and spare her, her most certainly can. I know that's happened plenty of times. Old, weak, infertile, and animals that don't make any money can be kept around for no other reason than to keep a happy herd; or happy farmer. Especially on a tiny farm like this.

    • @adelalukacova7982
      @adelalukacova7982 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      To explain more my thoughts do not keep farming animals as a pets: I have seen, unfortunately not only one time, that farmers went into misery due to keeping unproductive pieces into group.
      Other point that could be expected from Sally and the future will show: If she has half bull genes she could fight with the new bull about dominance. That will not bring peace into herd, that can bring only stress for animals and also for family, danger for the kids around.
      Simeon did you already give a name the new prety nice bull?

  • @diygardener4556
    @diygardener4556 7 ปีที่แล้ว +21

    Thats a good looking bull! As far as Sally the term used would be steril. When a cow carries twin calves, and the twins in utero are both male and female. The high levels of testosterone from the bull calf in utero, interfere with the developmental hormones of the cow calf in utero, hindering the development of the cow calfs reproductive organs, and full developmental chemistry as a female. Its technically a female, that may have some male characteristics, which depending of the degree of development could be termed hermaphrodite. If this is the case with Sally in utero, Sally is definitely sterile, and will only have value as a maket cow. If you dont have the back strory on Sally, and don't want to waist time, an experience livestock veterinarian can perform an examination, to determine if Sally has fully developed reproductive organs that can at least rule out infertility from in utero development.

    • @xenonram
      @xenonram 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      DIY Gardener sterile is a general term for any make or female that is unable to reproduce. There are much more specific terms depending on the reason for the sterility; like the free-Martins you describe.

    • @diygardener4556
      @diygardener4556 7 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Andrew Delashaw - I'm aware of this, which is why I made mention of a veterinarian check to determine if and specifically why sterility may exist, as in the video it was made clear, he wasn't even sure Sally was sterile. The purpose of that specific part of my posting was to describe the exact cause for educational purposes. There are plenty of other posts already giving the common name of the condition I accurately described, so I focused on the information that wasn't mentioned in the video or other posts.

What I wrote is what people typically don't know, and its entirely accurate and scientifically speaking.

      The issue is an incomplete reproductive tract. A freemartin litterally has missing cervex or uterous or ovaries or all of them. Has nothing to do with a mammery system.

    If sally was a twin to a bull, it will be impossible for her to get in calf.

    Have you ever observed Sally being "in heat"?
    Sally might be a "Free Martin" cow. Was She born a twin calf born with a bull calf twin?

    Re. Sally, yes she has more value if she can produce a calf but if not, well you aren't playing a game, it's real life and your livelihood, you must do what is economically viable, in the end Sally isn't a pet. Hope it works out whatever is best for you.

    Cattle are like other mammals lincluding humans in that a masculanized female while unusual is also not rare. I wonder did the bull's owner suggest this misfortune was a possibility or was he more definate? Sally's story is yet to be told.

      AnonaThetan Here in the States you must ask Sally if it identifies as a bull or a cow regardless of the sex it was born.

      Sex is a social construct, it's not biological, just ask any right-thinking college professor. Sally needs to attend a few liberal arts colleges to help her decide her sex.

    Nice to work with neighbors that farm. Beautiful tame bull. Let's hope she's just a slow learner and or she has had a grand life. She's been an underdog before. Good luck or good bye Sally. Yum yum

    I assume you've had Sally long enough to know if she breeds. I wonder if the bull will give her a go. That would be another clue.

    "Hemaphrodite" would be the medical term in English for an animal with components of both male and female genders.

    Hermaphrodite is the correct term. So sad for Sally. Maybe she will go into heat since you have a bull with her. I know by now it has been long enough to find out. I just came across your channel and find it quite entertaining. GOOD LUCK WITH SALLY. I will keep watching to find out how it goes.

    Free Martin is a female that had a male twin and the shared placenta and shared blood let the bull calfs testosterone nullify the female sex organs including the vagina. If Sally's vagina is not developed she may of had a twin that was unknown. The other condition is Double Muscled where the female for some reason produces excess testosterone.
