      I had a visit from the Swedish government just a week ago. To inspect our sewage system... Apparently the setup that has been used for almost 50 years now is suddenly not good enough. She gave us 3 months to fix it... and just to get a permit to fix it will costs 4000 SEK. Maybe I would be less bitter about it if the government actually did something worthwhile with all the taxes they collect instead of importing third-worlders.

      I bet you use the electricity supply that the Govt. organised. I bet you drive on roads that the Govt built and maintains with your taxes. Or do you think that you could just take the portion of tax that normally gets taken by the IRS and go out and fill a few pot holes yourself? Unless you want to live like the Unabomber in a shack in the backwoods, every citizen will engage with government. In Agriculture, who do you think sets food hygiene standards and over see's TB testing of bovines? Who accredits the countries food for export purposes?The fact that you live in a functioning democracy doesn't mean that you cannot be true to yourself, and your beliefs. Only Anarchists believe what you seem to be advocating.

      That's true. I've got a feeling that this control system is not made for our good but for their good. For those on the top of the pyramid and for their servants in goverment, all to the least office and terrain workers, inspectors, buerocrats, whatever.

    good video Simeon. For 5 years, I ran a commercial kitchen, with inspectors "dropping by" without any notice. It never bothered me, because we understood the rules and regulations, and our attitude was those were guidelines to keep our clients safe, and our business protected. We never had a problem with our inspectors - and we never scored less than a 98. For the past 20 years, I have owned a beauty salon - also inspected annually with no notice...and again, I never have a problem with my inspectors. Our attitudes make the biggest difference...we either are compliant, or we are rebellious. Thank you so much for your right-attitude and example.

    I have seen mobile shelters for cattle that are built on either a wheel system or skids. You can make it skinny enough to pass through your gates. As far as the concrete pad.. my cousins had a concrete pad with a rough surface poured where they kept the water container. Then the cattle had to walk the concrete to get a drink. It was poured to keep mud down but it would also work for hoof wear.

    Audio is fine. Glad to hear everything went well for you with the inspection. I think the key work is "Access" daily. Meaning they can still graze everyday but they need to be able to be sheltered "should they need it".
    As opposed to her saying that: "The cows need to be sheltered continuously once the temp reaches 5 C."

    Look at making quarters with your winter fields and build the shelter in the middle of it. Then could make several entries into the shelter and still rotate the cows on 4 fields.

    • @billh1471
      @billh1471 7 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      That is what I was thinking. If the shelter was in the middle of acreage and the pastures could be like pieces of a pie. Each day you would just need to move one side of the previous day's pie slice.

    Simeon, that was a great talk, and I agree with everything you said. I'm not a homesteader, but I wanted to live in a country where growing your own organic food and having a few chickens, or having some goats or sheep was the norm. And that's rural Italy for sure. In the last decade or so, the increasing US federal government control over homesteading, raw milk production, even having back yard vegetable gardens has become draconian and outrageous. For me it was a sign that I had to find a better place to live. Sometimes I miss the "comfort and convenience" of some things in the US, but not that much! Just on days when I'm really tired, haha. And congratulations on reaching 50,000 subscribers. Well done and well deserved. I'm looking forward to all of your future videos.

    Spot on, Simeon! Really interesting topics in this video.
    I lived in 5 different countries and this has given me different perspectives on countries, governments and especially people with all of their different traditions.
    Yes, the government can be a pain in the neck in any country, some maybe a bit more than others, but in your case I think it is pretty good to have at least someone coming to inspect what you are doing. For all they know you could be creating very unhealthy food or mistreating your farm animals, right?
    About the cow shelter, could you not make a shelter in the middle of the field and circulate the cow pads around it, a but like a pie chart?
    Keep up the good work, you're doing an amazing job! I would love to do what you are doing :)!

  • @simidhel
    @simidhel 7 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    I loved the sound of the rain! think in most countries, whilst maybe a challenege, with imagination and determination it should be possible to work within the regulations by finding innovative ways to stay true to your chosen approach. Your version of the mobile shelter is a fine example of that. Well done on your successful inspection.

    Simeon, you are absolutely right, like weeds that have good soil and water grow fast and healthy, corruption grows where there is money and lack of morels. In the US we have corruption in Washington DC that is directly proportional to the amount of tax dollars that flow through Government hands.The worst conditions for our farmers is the incestuous relationship between companies like Monsanto and our Department of Agriculture. Many of the laws but mainly regulations are implemented by individuals who are in government positions but got there after working for companies such as Monsanto.

  • @johnbarss3106
    @johnbarss3106 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    Really liked the video. Comment at the end was so true on government rules and regulations. In a perfect system they are there to help the citizens such as building codes and food safety. It is when those rules are compromised by big business that it can be less than successful. You made some great points. Monsanto being one. Love your videos.
    Thanks,

    Excellent talk today Simeon! Spot on and yes the U.S. has some very backwards (for the profit of the wrong people ), laws about a lot of things especially food. Insane for sure! However, not to speculate on the negative, it seems as you farmers should get together and try to change the laws concerning "cattle" to be a bit more species specific for their health and happiness as well as for the farmer and consumer. I know Highland cattle prefer to be outdoors years round, even in a sideways blowing blizzard or 50 below. All in all it sounds as if you are doing very well even the governments view. What I have seen on your channel is something I believe you can be proud of for doing your best and attempting to do your best for your family and you customers Kudo's to my friend. • @michaeltempsch5282
      @michaeltempsch5282 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Also quite likely the regs don't differentiate by breed (one size fits all) and if it's to protect the 'weakest' variants then it's likely to be overkill for the hardier ones.

When my Grandfather was alive, he had land (only two lots), had gardens, & a hothouse in winter for vegetables, had a grape arbor for jellies, jams, wine...bees for honey, they made their own soap, with land & good soil you can prosper. I think they only had chickens... It wasn't a farm, but he loved the land. He carved wood into water fowl.

    Could you perhaps incorporate the electric fencing equipment into the mobile shelter? You mentioned it needing sufficient weight for the wind, so maybe have the solar batteries and panel and wire spools built into them so that you can just run the wire out from the shleter? Could maybe also add a floor of rough surfaced matting floor for hoof wear?

    I saw a polythene roof over a corral used in this situation on "Alaska The Last Frontier." They also used the hides of animals they slaughtered as tarp on one side of their "Byre". (That's what we call it here in Scotland. I wonder what the Swedish word is, or indeed the German one.)
    Adhering to the law is important, but adhering to the duty of care you have towards your cows is paramount. I am sure you will always be guided to the solution that meets both requirements.
    The shelter for your cows could be an ongoing development here on your channel, and I hope to hear more about it.
    It is true that not all government control is bad, (And yes, you have the ideal breed for your environment.) but Swedish government control is Very different to US/UK/PRC/EU controls. Attitude is important, but you are witness to a creeping tyranny, that with advancing technology, will soon seek to control EVERY aspect of life, and THAT is the real threat to us all.
    Tread carefully with those in authority. We are to be wise as serpents, yet innocent as doves.
    I hope you can develop a positive relationship with the inspector, and that maybe, in time, they can even be persuaded to appear on camera, which they might do, if given assurances that they can have a veto over the final edit.
    Patience and wisdom 2U Simeon.

    I know nothing about your country and its laws but I certainly agree with your sentiment regarding the regulations in your area. They are not so different than ours in the States. Don't let those who have been programmed to believe that the other side of the aisle is rotten to the core and their own party is not. When I discovered that large companies (like Monsanto and many others) fund both parties, I became anti--political. I'm glad that your inspection went well. Keep up the good work.

    Round up (Monsanto) is killing the food chain of every living creature on land and in the water. It kills the bees that lands on the flower. Bees pollinate the flowers to bare fruit and vegetables also makes honey and wax. Without the bees humans/animals will not have any food to eat and you will stave to death or die of sickness (cancer).

    I think it is a lot about what kind of person is doing the inspection. I remember an issue a few years ago, there was a TV news item on an alone old man living in the woods and he had 1 horse. This horse was really old and they had been together for many years and this old man talked about him and his horse as two best friends. Well... the government did an inspection shortly after, as a result of the TV news item, and the horse was taken away cause of various rules. There are rules such as a horse is not allowed to be alone on a pasture (or something like that), my sister has horses, and due to this rule, one horse damaged another horse so much it had to be put down, they used to have them separate, but the inspector came around and stood there while the other horse got kicked almost to death by the other horses.

Government isn't inherently evil just like money or power isn't inherently evil. The more centralized government, money, and power becomes; the easier it is for all of those to be turned against the common man. My wife and I really have enjoyed following along on your farming journey.

      Government in fact is inherently evil. It’s rule by force.

    Cows only need 3 things in the wintertime:
    1. A shelter breaks the wind
    2. Dry bedding that doesn't give them pneumonia
    3. Good food that keeps the internal furnace going

      Sadly morals are rarely if ever part of gov't. Honesty and integrity don't exist. Even small town politics are corrupt. Always 'favors' and 'who knows who' involved.

      I think all farmers(in Sweden at least) that get EU agricultural financing has to do a small census every year where they have to state how many animals they have and how much pasture/other crops they have. Come to think on it, when applying for EU subsidies you state what you will grow and what animals you will have quite precise. So one of those 2 is probably used to decide who is rearing animals on a professional scale. You can probably count on getting a visit every 1-3 years depending on the size of your operation and ofc if you have things you need to fix it will make them come back sooner.

    Simeon... I have a shelter lol if you watch our most recent episode of Reconstructing Spirit Hill we cut a 10x12-ish shelter off the ground, attached wheels, and moved it with the tractor. I'd give it to you... but the postage would be expensive.

    Well said. I may add that in general the government is a reactionary force, something needs to happen and a sufficient public outcry present for the government to prioritize regulation and restrictions of the subject.
    Of course there is also a certain amount of lobbying both from corporations and activists, special interest groups and private people.
    But the biggest issue with government, is the people they govern over - the lack of interest of the population to be involved in government from a local level all to the top is why people are misinformed, scared and look at the government as the enemy. Lobbyists get their way because people are inactive. This is one major flaw in humans - being shortsighted. It’s more about today’s convenience then tomorrow’s benefit. People think demonstrating/protesting today still counts ten years from now.
    That’s why it’s important to be and to stay involved. Become community leaders, supporters, educators and researchers. Be open to change and progress.

    The way I see it that a little political talk fits in very well with your vlog. And with everyone's life since we live under its umbrella, for the most part. No matter what system we live under nowadays, it's become so bad that we-the-people are the enemy of government. We're regressing back to the feudal system.

    @Swedish Homestead I had an idea for your cow shelter: Why not placing the shelter in the middle of the pasture? If it's in the middle, you can make 7 sections of the pasture around the shelter (like a circle). You can open the gates to a new sention every day and you don't need to move the shelter, because it's placed in the middle and has access to every pasture. Just an idea...

    Good talk on your part and I agree that the Government must check farms for the welfare of animals. In North America, animal welfare has disappeared in the adoption of mega factory farms that are putting small farmer out of business. The treatment of animals on mega farms is horrendous and the poor quality meat is sold cheap at Costco or Walmart. My family only buy from small local farms.

    Here in the US we keep cattle outside year round and it gets well below freezing here. I have seen cattle with ice hanging off them, cold does not bother them at all. We feed hay when there is no more grass and make sure their water doesn't freeze over. Seems like a lot of government nonsense over there....

  • @juliacampbell5881

    Great video today hun,
    You touched on so many points of view. I am in the U.S so I can only speak for some of the laws and government here.
    I live in a city in
    Washington State. So I have those laws for gardening or farm animals and zoning and all that. But we also have county laws, state laws, and then federal laws. And one may super cede another. Sounds crazy to some in other countries right? When it comes to any government you can hope that they have your best interest at heart, but do not put your blind faith in it. Use your head and do your research and always watch when things change in that government. Here in this city they can do that overnight, sometimes without a vote or even letting the public know about it.
    I cannot even catch rainwater for my garden. It is considered property of the state and if I put up a rain barrel I can be fined.
    Julia
