"Pretty decent looking game" kind of feels like an understatement... It might not have all the most modern tech & features baked into it, but the game's visual direction looks really good anyway. Skull & Bones might have more going on with its waves & ocean, but it doesn't end up looking as good overall.
Art direction > Graphical Fidelity. Sea of Thieves has a much cleaner image, and it’s easier to distinguish objects. That’s not even getting into the massive gameplay differences.
Almost every time I play SoT (PC) I'm reminded of how good it looks. Simple things like looking out over the water as the sun gets low enough to cast light through the waves. Even on Xbox One S, the game looked pretty good, but I don't want to go back to those loading times.
Sony only players are getting a legitimate good live service titles here. Years of updates have made this game really fun and full of content. It looks nice too.
Okay this needs to be known, I went and compared the visuals on my Series X to what DF is showing. DF is showing the Xbox on 120 Hz mode, especially shadows, when it’s on 60 it matches up with crispness. When you switch from 60 to 120 plants are removed and changed randomly, I switched back and forth from 60 to 120 to 60 and so on and and the background I saw different grass popping in and out. After switching half a dozen times I got there to be no plants at the 1:00 mark they show. So either DF is ignorant to this or purposely trying to get people to argue for engagement

I love it when console players feel superior about the smallest advantages over the other platform. Outside of this video or TH-cam in general, no one would notice it. Both consoles are almost the same, only other manufacturers.
That isn't the point. The point people are making about this is the utter lies by Phil and Aaron Greenburg and the like. Turns out Xbox consoles aren't the best place to play even their own games.
Exactly it’s hilarious I often wonder what these people would do if Xbox and Sony didn’t exist how would they feel any sense of accomplishment in their lives 😂😂😂
Tell me, PC gamer... hiw do you feel about Horizon Forbidden West only getting slightly better draw distances and native 4K over PS5 and only if you have a $500+ GPU in your PC? No one is above the "console war," not even PC gamers, at least that's what I see every time I'm looking at these kinds of comparisons... I mean, that's why you are even here and wrote your comment.
They do. Six years after launch and they still haven't figured out their netcode. Especially during events like the Gold&Glory weekend right now, it is very unpleasant to play. Stuttering, framerate drops and freezes left and right - even on pretty beefy PCs.
PC framedrops are even worse. And if you don't live within 100 miles of an Azure server your ping will be triple digits and you'll rubberband all over the place.
This is something that they originally wanted to do according to an interview in 2000. Had Activision succeeded in buying Rare back then, we would've seen some Rare titles on Playstation 2 and Nintendo GameCube alongside Xbox, although how they would fare under Activision would definitely get worse by the 2010s, as the 2000s were considered the Silver Age of Activision, following the Golden Age in the 1980s, Market Crash aside.
Probably because it’s an incidental feature to the experience. Devs don’t want to bother with console-specific features like this because it adds dev time and expense they have to worry about
Because the feature doesn't matter. I have Ratchet & Clank Rift Apart and Spiderman on my PC, with a PS5 controller at my disposal, but I still choose to play with my razer chroma xbox controller because it sits way better in my hand.

In some instances the shadows look softer on Series X, which I like. That being said unless you’re watching things side by side you don’t notice it. The shadows sometimes look more pixelated on PS5 which is also odd. Not a huge deal. - What I do wonder about is the draw distance and why there’s a difference there? Unfortunately, I wouldn't be optimistic about the server stutter being fixed, it's been an issue for a very long time and one of the community's biggest complaints is server performance in general. To be fair on Rare, the game uses a lot of resources to simulate the waves and physics on them, as well as the loot that players tend to hoard. There are also some issues with the EAC implementation on PC that will hopefully be ironed out in the next update (Season 12, April 30th, same day as PS5 release). At the moment, it's not configured correctly and causing problems for some legit players trying to launch the game on Windows 11, especially. And it's not actually stopping cheaters as a result.
9:30 The game actually does have some SSR in places like underwater caves. I wish it didn't though. The lack of SSR on the ocean is one of the things I like most about the game. I'll take stable, low-detail reflections over artifact-ridden SSR any day.
@spectrumfox yeah, and as someone who plays games, it would bother them if they get an inferior experience from their own first party studios compared to the competition. Why? Because had they known, they would have bought that console instead for the superior experience. That's not console warring. That's being an aware customer. MS is just taking the p*** out of it at this point.
It's been known for a while. Perhaps most notably there used to be a tiny triangle of terrain floating in midair near one of the outposts. Sometimes a piece of grass would spawn on it, sometimes it wouldn't.
Hey Digital Foundry... Just wanted to ask a question. Given the unexpected success of the Playstation Portal along with the Switch sales numbers, do you think Sony will factor in a handheld alongside it's PS6 plans, similar to Microsoft?
@@gothpunkboy89 The PSP pretty much collapsed in the end due to rampant Piracy and the PS Vita suffered from a bunch of bone headed decisions to the point where it didn't even get a Gran Turismo game on the system, which speaks volumes of how it failed. Therefore, I can agree with your statement.
"the worlds most powerful console" runs its own games worse than the other platforms its games are on It's kinda hilarious no matter what angle you're looking at it from.
Now tell me, what victory have Xbox players been receiving recently? There hasn't been a single new Microsoft published game *4 months* in the year yet for Xbox and the one that's dropping in a month is 900p 30fps? Lmao goddamn, I mean some people are *still* begging for Helldivers 2 on Xbox with that petition; shouldn't they be playing Halo instead?
Sea of Thieves is a VERY CPU bound game when on bigger islands and outposts. Some of this was mitigated with the release of the UE 4.27 or "GDK" version of the game which has a DX12 renderer with Multithreaded rendering option.
GDK has helped with multithreading indeed. Previously it seemed to only saturate a couple of cores and was extremely CPU bound. Now, it seems to utilise a lot more cores and more efficiently. Previously it was also culling a lot of LODs rapidly, which was over-working the CPU as it tried to swap assets in and out of memory far too often, which resulted in drops. There are still a few heavier areas (such as around Port Merrick or the Monkey Island Tall Tale) but the game is generally better optimised since the switch to GDK. While traversal stutter is also still a problem around some islands, the stutter and drops that Oliver experienced in the video are most likely network related. Something we've complained about for years, and it's unlikely to be completely smoothed out entirely.
Could you get more in depth with ps5 vs pc vs Xbox It seems from the snippets that the ps5 is even superior than pc in some aspect but one would assume that pc can hit 120+ fps without dropping resolution
I thought it would be a case like Hi-fi Rush, but Sea of Thieves has problems with crashing on the PS5 to 0 fps and from the looks of it (other reviews), Grounded has higher resolution on the Series X. Sea of Thieves was in beta, so it could change.
HIFI often runs better on SX with a higher fps at times. The shadow quality is the only real difference but something most won't notice unless they look closely.
Have to disagree on this one. I prefer the 120hz mode on PS5. From a normal distance, I don't notice the drop in resolution with the game being so fast-paced. And with VRR, I haven't noticed any drops in FPS.
This narrative that the series x has some untapped power because ps5 is the lead platform never made sense to me. They are both amd gpus from the same generation and architecture. The faster gpu should just run the code faster. Does the 4070 ti run worse on pc because the devs made the game on workstations that had a 4070? No.
The Xbox situation is pathetic, the users of their games are testers and then on Playstation you get the best version. At the beginning of the generation I really felt comfortable with Xbox but now I'm not, I will switch to PS5 after 9 years with Xbox, the best decision I can make.
@Microsoft_better_than_Appl3 The ps5 is almost exactly the same as the xboxsx... PC's are the most different here. (that's why I would find it interesting to have a bit more focus on PC)
If you turned on HDR in the game, then you would have gone from "pretty decent looking game" to "holy crap this is absolutely stunning!" The HDR in Sea of Thieves might be the best HDR I've ever experienced. It's almost too good actually.
AW2, PP, and DD2 run better on SX. The SX version is just running the Xbox One version with enhancements while PS5 is using new code. This is a 6-year-old game.
@@Rooster832 Dd2 runs better but with lower settings in graphics maybe by a bug like Valhalla that was later patched. The point is df was shouting through the roofs about the power difference and the terraflops and after 3 years they still don't get it that ps5 has advantages in some areas like bandwidth and texture fill rate. We never had a generation with the both consoles so close to each other in performance
@@squall116 Aw2 was also running at a higher framerate and PP was keeping a steadier 120fps on SX than PS5 and the SSD speed isn't that big of a difference. I agree that the difference isn't much but some games on SX have 20% more performance than PS5. Hitman 3 was hitting 4k and higher shadow quality on SX while PS5 was doing 1800p and med shadow quality. I own both consoles and they both have their cons and pros. I belive it was DF that said DD2 has a slightly better framerate because of the SX CPU being a little more powerful and it's a CPU-bound game.
One of the biggest reason is that Xbox is runing with DirectX layer while PS is using its own custom layer that able to access more power out of the console. Its not even a novelty but a widely known situation.
Maybe MS should switch to Vulcan? and not use DX12 if it's causing them this much of an issue but strange how games like AW2, DD2, and PP run better on SX. I think it has a lot to do with devs and the engine they use.
Its insane how ported games from "world's most powerful console" look better on your rival's console. Like how does Xbox manage to fumble this bad? It needs to be studied.

How many more times does PS5 have to trounce series x before you just say the factual reason?
They probably say this because the consoles are allowed to have differing settings. Meaning the series x draw distance should be similar to ps5, but it is not. It is the decision of the devs to keep them similar, probably to keep the software development process streamlined
Everyone seems to forget this is an XBOX One developed title that runs on Series consoles. I don't think they ever really optimized it for the new hardware as the One X has better shadows at a distance (see 5:11-5:12). Just developers being lazy on XBOX as always. Would be interesting to know if the weird drops assumed to be related to networking also happen on PC.
They do. Six years after launch and they still haven't figured out their netcode. Especially during events like the Gold&Glory weekend right now, it is very unpleasant to play. Stuttering, framerate drops and freezes left and right - even on pretty beefy PCs.

How come these PS5 Xbox ports never mention if they added DualSense haptics?
A big reason why I’ll buy a game on PS5 vs my XSX, like The Ascent, for example.
Probably because it’s an incidental feature to the experience. Devs don’t want to bother with console-specific features like this because it adds dev time and expense they have to worry about

Cheaters, huh? They better do the "Save File erasure" threat again on them.

Sea of Thieves is a VERY CPU bound game when on bigger islands and outposts. Some of this was mitigated with the release of the UE 4.27 or "GDK" version of the game which has a DX12 renderer with Multithreaded rendering option.
Not true, if it was cpu bound xbox one wouldn't manage stable 30fps on jaguar cpu. XSX cpu is many times faster, more than 4X faster.

The PS5 shadows just look juddery to me, they may be higher res but they still look worse imo
Because ps5 can't handle shadows
Because PS5 shines bright out in the open not hiding in shadows
Ps5 draw distance and sharp shadows for the win! Cery=right phil=used car salesman!

Nothing but your poor fantasies 😂
It started to concerns me that MS seems like they want to exit the market. As a PS fan I really don't want that at all. They should get their heads together and try to be them in XB360 era again.
As a ps5 and series x owner I can honestly say it’s time to sell the series x.
So all Xbox games are now available on PS5?
Yeah he will just play his Xbox games on Game Pass on his Sony box using the new Sony Quick Resume.
@@leonxl
All the games worth actually getting.
@@leonxlno…but the ones that I want to play are. And GT7 is better than Forza so I’d be happy with just the ps5 tbh. Microsoft doesn’t offer any exclusives that justify series x ownership anymore.
@@OneLastScholarquick resume on series x really isn’t a killer app. My series X has been gathering dust for months tbh so not sure how quickly I need to resume anything
I've actually been curious to play this one, i waited for an offer on Steam because i'd be a solo player (hopefully i'll get used to it solo)
Well, at least that freakout Jim Ryan had about Microsoft "downgrading PS5 versions of games they developed/published" was unwarranted.
Still, that's 3 for 3 of games getting a bunch of polish for the PS5 versions that don't appear on Series X at first. Even Microsoft doesn't give 2 shits about their console anymore.
I think that freakout was perfectly justifiable at the time, the PS5 versions are probs superior because they haven't touched up a game like this for awhile.
@@adamburgess7890why would they gimp their own product? Do you think they want to lose money 😂😂
@@theanimerapper6351 Why would they buy Activision?
@@theanimerapper6351 You'd think they'd want the superior version on their own platform, in turn increasing sales on their own platform as people want the superior version. And they'd then take 100% of the cut, rather than the 70% they'd take selling on playstation
Absolutely the same nonsense as the nonsense about Sony paying for the worsen of the graphics of games on XBOX. According to their stupid logic, it turns out that Sony paid Microsoft to worsen their exclusive games on XBOX? 🤣
You know there are alot of games that deserve coverage over a 6 year old last gen game.
Xbox Series X games look better on PS5
Enjoy 😉 Thx for funding game pass while you pay full price for a game 6yrs old 🥳 😂 🦄
@Microsoft_better_than_Appl3 bro if you wanna play 2 gen old games buy a 360 for 20 bucks lol. Xbox has no VR. No touchpad, hilariously bad video editing and recording software compared to playstation, no onboard mic or speaker, no shareplay, no good exclusives while sony has some of the best games ever made, even gamepass has been worst the ps extra for several months, worse performance, much slower load times, way smaller playerbase, a much less competative controller hence why xbox trails playstation in litterally every majot competative shooter, my series x collects so much dust its honestly just a paperweight at this point.
@Microsoft_better_than_Appl3 so you just have no idea what you are talking about. Nevermind lol. Series s loading time are 3 to 4 times slower than a ps5 bud haha
@Microsoft_better_than_Appl3 it in fact doesnt have shareplay, again u dont know what you are talking about. Also no games are 80 dollars, also ps5 has a gamepass equivalent that has been better for months. Again, dont know what youre talking about also i have a series x and a one and a 360 so yes i use xbox lol again, dont know what youre talking about
@Microsoft_better_than_Appl3 also microsoft may be richer but xbox devision is waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay smaller and meams nothing to them. Sony dominates every gen, has outsold xbox every gen, has 16x the exclusives in the top 200 highest ranked games. Like, do you live under a rock? Lol
When the pirate genre is so tiny and non existant that sea of theives is the only option for a decent online pirate game

That was likely sarcasm.
Because pirate isn't a genre 💀
@@theanimerapper6351 over 50000 games since the 2000s and pirate still isn't a genre, were doing something horribly wrong
“A PlayStation advantage which I don’t understand”. DF has been clueless as to why the PS5 is better for 4 years now. Take off the clown hats guys Xbox just isn’t as good. Now y’all are bashing ps5 pros cpu when you know nothing about the system other than some numbers. Haven’t you guys learned anything from the ps5 vs series x? Microsoft shills. PS5: 2020 of November.
It's been 3 years 5 months.
@@VariantAECyour math ain't mathing bruh😂
@@yomamasohot6411
2024 minus 3 is 2021. April is the 4th month of the year November is the 11th so that's 5 months. 5 divided by 12 is 0.42 years. Plus 18 days or 0.05 years.
PS5 launched on Nov 12, 2020 which is 3.47 years ago today to one-onehundreths precision.
How is 3.47 yeaes now equal to 4 years?
Play it first on Xbox Series. Play the enhanced version or even physical copy on PS5.
You just can't find more beautiful water than this in my humble opinion.
Thanks Oliver 😊👍🏼
Assassins creed 4 balck flag has better water
Pikmin 3. No, seriously. Look up videos of the Twilight River level.
Yeah the water physics are great in this game
Also Skull & Bones.
So true. I've said this before, It has the best looking sea in any video game.
