    Oh man... I really hope you don't regret not having conduit or troughs in the future. I've been there with burying cables inside the wall and later needing to add or change something... no fun! Going to be a great build though, I have no doubt!

      Studs are the problem. If you’ve ever experienced trying to retrieve drill shank extensions from inside a wall when the damn things decide to come apart, you’ll know what I mean. Sagan! You are THE BOSS! You keep mum and dad in check, y’hear? ❤

    • @ricolync
      @ricolync ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah, the murican way of installing wires looks really odd to me. Here in Finland we always put everything in conduits and large installments on "shelves" that run in a closed off compartment. But out of a system that delivers what it's supposed to it makes no difference, the cables are shielded anyway...

    • @gregoryabat3948

      Well that and it’s all wire tied. My current room is that way. I occasionally want to set fire to it all. 😅

      @@ricolync true that. I was thinking future-proofing. But if there are spacious cavities like Eric’s barn seems to have, should be all right. The plans tell the story.

      Yeah I am hoping I don't regret it as well. I really considered putting everything in conduit but it made the installation vastly more complicated and labor intensive. This is my 9th studio build and not one of them has had audio/data cabling installed in conduit. Thus far it hasn't been an issue. If I need to add lines I'll figure something out. You're point is well taken though, I could live to regret this choice :)

    In my experience with cat6 mic lines they don't carry phantom power. How are you planning on handling phantom on those connections?

    • @mrwev
      @mrwev  ปีที่แล้ว

      Good question! CAT6 mic lines can do phantom power if you use "Shielded" CAT6.

    • @robdrauden1495
      @robdrauden1495 ปีที่แล้ว

      Just as a note too, there are dedicated boxes made that can sit in the room by the mics or tie lines that will provide phantom. I believe they used to be more common back in the day.

    • @lmrecorders
      @lmrecorders ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@robdrauden1495 I am familiar with those and they're quite useful for avoiding "hot patching" that can occur by running phantom from a mic pre through a patchbay. That is the source of the misunderstanding over ribbon mic vulnerability and phantom power. I reckon a good product would be a cat6 mic input box with switchable phantom built in. Or a prefab mic panel boxes with keystone jacks and a phantom supply built in.

    Hi Eric ! I work in a venue where we use cat 6 to Dmx for light purposes but not for mic signal. Is there some difference on capacitance/ft or 48v compared to regular mic cable ? Thanks, an other great video !

    • @mrwev
      @mrwev  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      The CAT6 cable does very well in the capacitance/ft rating. Being in the teens (around 15pf/ft) It is generally lower than most mic cable. I used the CAT6 mic cable thing a bunch at my studio in Topanga and it worked great. The only thing I could find that was a potential issue is that grounding of the mics is in groups of 4. If you are trying to plug 4 mics into four totally different mic preamps, you are emerging the grounding of all of those preamps. It can occasionally cause a ground loop. That was rare though :)

  • @adamlittich
    @adamlittich ปีที่แล้ว

    You should really give Dante more consideration. Especially the Focusrite RedNet gear. With something like an A16R, you have 16 channels of high quality AD/DA converters that can live near the source, with whatever preamps you want. There are plenty of remote controlled preamps too, if you want to still be able to control gain from the control room. Then, you can have 16 channels of digital audio run over one CAT6 cable back to your control room with no signal degradation and no expensive multicore audio snakes. Adding additional Dante units is a breeze, all you need is a network connection. You can even use fiber optic cable to connect more distant places to your audio network (like the house to barn via the fiber you already installed ). The latency is great, usually between 0.25-1 msec. You can also use Dante for sending cue mixes to a Dante headphone amp like the Focusrite X2P or AM2, no need for headphone tie lines, just CAT6 cable. Video can also be sent over Dante.
    I think it would be perfect for a huge studio setup like yours. It’s a bit of a pain to set up the network initially (if I were you I’d hire a Dante certified network tech to plan and install), but after initial setup it works without much tech fiddling. Analog cable certainly has its own frustrations, like trying to track down ground loops, RFI noise issues, or a broken/cold solder joint. 🤬

  • @Henkkamachine

    Hi, awesome stuff! It would be interesting to hear your thoughts about grounding and avoiding ground loops with multi room use. Are you planning to use main CR patchbay as a "star ground"? 🤓

    • @mrwev
      @mrwev  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Good question!. Yes the patchbay is going to be the center of my ground universe. I have also setup an isolated ground for all audio stuff. All of the patchbays will an extremely robust ground connection to that isolated ground network. That should be a good start and I'll see how it all adds up once things start getting plugged in :)

    Eric, great project and happy family!
    A dream place for sure, color me green envy, haha, my setup is quite modest.
    As I am obsessed with mixing, I have some questions...
    What has been, to you, the greatest way/place to mix?
    Which are your favourite headphones?
    Do you think that strong mixes can be made with them, if you know them?
    I use audeze lcd-x, they are regarded extremely flat and I never thought subs could be well represented in a small space until trying them, for someone like me they have become my "room".

    • @mrwev
      @mrwev  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Good questions! Thus far my two favorite mix rooms have been HOS recording (the pre barefoot studio) and the Topanga studio. Those were the funnest to mix in. The reality for me is that no room is truly flat and they all have to be learned. You just get used to the way the room sounds and mix to it. The two recent records I finished were both mixed in a make shift bedroom/control room. These two records could be my two favorite sounding projects to date :)
      for headphones, I use Audio Technica M50x. I am sure there are "better" headphones out there but I am used to the M50Xs and I can get what I need from them. It is very difficult for me to figure out the lowend with headphones. I still really need to listen on speakers for that part of the process. Headphones are great for dialing in the mids and highs and stereo field stuff.
      I think you can definitely get the results you want with headphones. Any approach just takes practice. The more you finish mixes and take them out to the world to see how the translate the more you will learn your monitoring, be it headphones or speakers. Best of luck with your mixing!

    Hey Eric, I’m kind of curious why you chose not to put your CAT6 in conduit? I’ve run into problems before at my house where I ran CAT5 through the walls without conduit and then found I had big problems after a couple of years as networking standards got faster and gosh it was a nightmare to redo all that. I saw what you said about WiFi but are you really thinking that CAT6 will be good enough for what you’re doing and you won’t need to upgrade ever? Do you have something else in place that we didn’t see that’ll make it easy to upgrade (if the time comes) without a big hassle?

    • @mrwev
      @mrwev  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Good Question! I'l figure it out when I get there. There are always options for running cable that is not embedded in the wall. At barefoot, I ran cable all over the place when the existing installation didn't have what I needed. There was always a way to figure it out. I'm sure I will discover things I wish I had not far into this and I'll just have to figure out a way to add it. At least on this one I get to start with really clean walls. That's better than all my other studios haha!

    Considering how widespread and affordable Dante (and AVB) are nowadays, it's honestly so much easier (and cheaper) to just keep preamps/converters close to the source and run Cat6A to a central switch(es) (or fibre for longer runs as it quickly becomes soooo much cheaper). Also Cat6 can be used so easily with baluns for Composite or SDI Video, AES3, AES10 (though there are different MADI over Ethernet "Standards"....) or even analogue audio (but then shielded or at least foiled cabling should be used rather than the standard install grade UTP if you want high quality transmission with any coherent low end).
    I believe RealWorld is nowadays fully onboard with Dante between the rooms in addition to the analogue lines and I believe Deutsche Grammophon (Emil Berliner Studios nowadays) has been sending MADI over fibre between studios for a long time.
    Thanks for the videos, looking forward to how it finally turns out.

      @@mrwev I can kind of understand that. And while there are some jazz/classical cats who may insist on this Yamaha or that Steinway, perhaps that's not your target market anyway. Especially with the long cable runs, it seems to make a lot of sense to have (remote controlled) preamps and run line level to the control room.

    4 thoughts, here:
    A) always lovely to see a studio build, even more so when it's well explained, in detail. 👍
    B) funny how Americans build what are basically glorified, elaborate wooden sheds and call them "a multi million dollar home / recording studio", with all that crazy freely hanging inter-wall wiring... and if bricks or concrete or stone are involved it's immediately "a billionaire's mansion/castle"! 😂😉😉 (That kind of wiring wouldn't fly in a modern EU build, btw⚠️)
    C) I know the man is famous for Barefoot Recording, but is walking barefoot in a construction site, especially one involving nails and wooden splinters, really a good idea?! 😮😉
    D) although it has already been said that this wil be a console-less studio, the more it grows the more it seems to me to be screaming for one of those gorgeous and versatile UTA consoles as the nerve centre & focal point of this place that will undoubtedly make a lot of good sounds and good music.
    Maybe a mini UTA?!
    😉👍

    I'm gonna be the complainy networking bitch on this (;-) HA!) - when you are running high bit and sample rate audio, in an ATMOS setup with multiple concurrent streams, you start eating a ton of bandwidth. Couple that with internet providers offering up symmetrical XGS-PON at 3Gig and 8Gig rates by end of summer this year - cat6a running 10gig is SOOOOO 2019.
    Adopting a hub/spoke (or a fiber ring right around the whole barn), run fiber bundles at 25/40Gig to your hubs and run cat6a only at your spokes for short distances. You're going to be storing a lot of data on your working project servers - and you can run sessions where you can record right to them, edit from them directly, have them all RAIDed up for speed and resiliency and backed-up every night ........you coulda made Junkie XL SO jelly! lol.....
    All I'm saying - bandwidth is your friend......do not fear it. Tongue and cheek comments of course - it's looking great!
