    I've traveled to 30 countries, and that drive emerging from that tunnel into Yosemite Valley is still the best view reveal I've ever seen. Seeing it again on your video gave me goosebumps.

      It was tough getting the right track and timing for the reveal. It all revolved around exciting the tunnel. 😂. It's about a half a sec behind.

    Congrats on the 1k subs! Yosemite Valley never disappoints. Sadly, the rain from the thunderstorm you experienced is just a drop in the bucket and won’t do anything to end the drought. Hopefully, we will have a good winter with a lot of snow. Looking forward to the next episode!

    Just finished the JMT man! Started on the 19th of July, finished on the 5th of august, what an adventure! That rainy first day you had, I stupidly attempted to climb half dome. Did not succeed as I kept slipping on the granite but will try again!

    Thinking about planning this trip (after not backpacking for decades) and watching you here makes me vicariously nervous. I'd imagine being very eager to get going at this point, but also anxious about all the things that can go wrong and halt the trip -- or worse, I guess, but I'd be focused on just making it end to end.
    P.S. I'm also about your age and I'd also be doing it solo. I don't mind that at all, but I'm aware that it makes me more vulnerable.

    • @JRHikes
      @JRHikes  4 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      You should totally do it! Get your pack weight dialed in, hike CONSTANTLY with that pack. I filled my pack with towels and 30# of dumbbells. Hike in the shoes you will wear. Max out the incline of your treadmill. You'll do fine. Acclimate in Mammoth. Take Diamox. I posted a video about food prep and shipping it out. I also did a video about applying for the lotto.

    • @StamfordBridge
      @StamfordBridge 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@JRHikes Thanks for the encouragement! The good news is I’m in decent shape for my age (nothing impressive, but decent - lost a lot of weight recently).
      The bad news is I haven’t backpacked in decades and all my old gear is extremely outdated and on the wrong coast. Essentially, I have nothing.
      So, do you think this is realistic in terms of time:
      1. Start buying gear now, over several months.
      2. Apply for the lottery in January for July/August (I have both months off work).
      3. Get in a couple of shakedown hikes in Spring to test equipment and test myself.
      4. Attempt the JMT in July/August, probably at a slow pace.
      Or is that too rushed? Maybe I start preparing now for a hike in two years?

    • @JRHikes
      @JRHikes  4 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@StamfordBridge here's the thing. If you feel that you are in shape then I think you should do it. Definitely try and get as much gear together as you possibly can as soon as possible.

    • @JRHikes
      @JRHikes  4 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@StamfordBridge keep this in mind, Jessica Mills AKA dixie, she hiked the entire Appalachian trail with very little to no prep. If you haven't watched her hiking channel, you should. Homemade Wanderlust. I would suggest that you start with your big three. Your tent, your backpack, and your sleep system. Get those out of the way. Those are the ones you will spend most money on. Definitely after that start working on your kitchen. Then after that start working in on everything else in your essentials list. I believe that you should definitely apply in January if you're going to attempt a July / August hike. In the interim, I would hike as much as you can everywhere and anywhere. Even if it's the same loop every weekend. If you're going to do a southbound hike, you will start off slow coming out of Yosemite Valley. As your make your way past Tuolumne Meadows, you will start to pick up your pace.
