@steelgreyed Well, the warp has nothing to do with what happened to Stormherald and Zarha Mancion. It was actually far more incredible and the one and only time it ever happened in 40k lore.
First off, the whole concept of the "machine spirit" the AdMechs believe in is basically a misinterpretation. They observed powerful machines (like titans) move while powered down, so they believed that all machines had something like a soul, but that only the most powerful among them would be strong enough to move on their own. The reality is that titans have a somewhat "dumbed down" AI, so that it would be able to be controlled while still assisting the ones who do. While powered down, those AIs sleep and they do dream while they're asleep. That's why they sometimes move, although they shouldn't be able to.
Now, the thing is that those AIs actually hate to be controlled. Emperor titans are the strongest of their kind and they resist the pilots assigned to them the most. Stormherald was one of the most vicious Emperor titans and especially hard to control, but Zarha Mancion managed to pilot him for almost 80 years, which is already an incredible feat on its own.
During the Siege of Helsreach, Stormherald saw his chance to break free of this slavery and continuously tried to tip Zarha's emotional balance in order to blind her judgement. At one point of the battle Zarha witnessed the fall of the Reaver titan Draconian and with it the death of her friend Princeps Veragon, so Stormherald flooded her mind with rage. Zarha stormed out of the formation to avenge her friend, which led her directly into a trap laid by the Orks, who detonated multiple bombs and collapsed a bunch of skyscrapers onto Stormherald. When Zarha realised what she did, she was so shaken by her shame that Stormherald finally managed to break through her willpower and started to drown her soul (which means that instead of the princeps controlling the titan, the titan controlls the princeps instead, which is irreversible). As the Moderati said in this movie, this is how princeps "die", they're basically a breathing vegetable until the higher-ups decide to pull the plugs, which is their only option at that point - usually.
Grimaldus arrived with his men and entered Stormherald in order to fight off the Orks that had boarded the titan. As soon as he was done, he told Zarha the story about Dorn and Horus and reminded her of the oath she took. Zarha was so moved that she was able to focus and willpowered her way back into controlling Stormherald again, which was completely unheard of until this time and never happened again after that incident.
The thing is: It is very much likely that Zarha was not the only one who was hit right into the heart by Grimaldus' words. A famous theory is that Zarha regaining control was only possible, because Stormherald was touched by this story as well and let it happen in order to fight alongside her instead of against her. This theory is supported by what happened when Godbreaker eventually killed Stormherald. After firing its Hellstorm Canon, the Emperor titan was pretty much powered down completely, yet in a last act of defiance, Zarha managed to get up one last time and hit Godbreaker with one of her titan's arms, which again was totally unheard of until she did it. This would be absolutely impossible under normal circumstances, except - you probably guessed it - Stormherald itself helped her with that.
So what Grimaldus did here was not to snatch her soul back from the warp, it was rather inspiring a Princeps Majoris and her Emperor titan to lay aside their conflict and fight alongside eachother until death takes them both instead. For me, this was one, if not the best scene of the whole 3rd war.

The best part of this is that as the video progresses, the quality of the animation and the details that are drawn improves and expands progressively. Not just a result of the animators getting better as this (originally being an episodic animatic) gained popularity, but also a beautiful way to showcase how this entire movie is a from-memory retelling: The further back in memory you go, the more details which are lost and the fuzzier/less clear the memories become.

Battle experience eternally preserved and pristine, while everything else, just fades, remembered just enough to have consistent timetable of places, faces, actions, ready to be recalled if needed, but otherwise, very low on totem pole of priorities.

One thing that always gets me with this beautiful story is that it really puts into visually perspective the “grim dark” of 40k. This battle is a microcosm of this universe. That last stand at the temple really sets it home. You’d normally see, in Hollywood movies, the group of soldiers getting saved last minute when all hope was lost. Not 40k. No reinforcements, no final daring plan, just death and cold corpses. It really is kinda shock when you are so use to seeing them all come out alive.

Well, the serve unto death even in futility flavor of grimdark is on the menu in this film, and in certain contexts of the wider 40k verse.
But overall, I find the 'saved at the last minute' trope as alive and well in 40k as any other long running fictional world. How many times in the lore, stretching from the Horus Heresy to the Indomitus Crusade, do we see a protagonist, pilgrimage, platoon or even whole planet surviving and even winning because whichever force shows up, out of the black void or the wild blue to beat off whichever faction is just on the cusp of eating or vanquishing all hope?

In real history, this is usually how human civilization has truly gone. WH40k glorifies the combat with rampage and gore, and tries so fucking hard to be 'edgy as fuck' all the time. Of course, this is why we love it of course. However, it pales in comparison to real human history and the grim darkness that is our past - hell what it still is today...

We hold one of the mightiest cities on the face of the planet. The fury of its guns sends all skyborne enemies to the ground in flames. We stand united in our thousands, our weapons without number, our purity without question, and our hearts beating courage through our blood. And this is how they attack us? Brothers and sisters, a legion of beggars and alien dregs wheezes its way across the plains. Forgive me, when the moment comes, that they whine and weep against our walls. Forgive me that I must order you to waste ammunition upon their worthless bodies. I have heard many souls speak my name in whispers since I came to Helsreach. I ask you now: Do you know me? Do you know me?!"

"I am Grimaldus of the Black Templars, a brother to the Steel Legion of this defiant world. Never again in life will your actions carry such consequence. Never again will you serve as you serve now. No duty will matter as much and no glory will taste as true. We...are the defenders of Helsreach. On this day, we carve our legend in the flesh of every alien we slay. Will you stand with me?"
    "YES!"
"Sons and daughters of the Imperium, our blood is the blood of heroes and martyrs. The xenos dare defile our city. They dare tread the sacred soil of our world. It’s possible because there are no purple-hairs trying to force their ideology on anyone throughout the movie. This is simply turning a book into film.

I like to think that the reason the scenes get easier to see as the movie goes on is because black Templar’s only understand battle. That when they’re outside of it, it’s almost as though there is a haze clouding their vision. Battle brings them clarity, and, if my theory is correct, they are able to focus easier in the thick of it. If this is the case, this is an amazing way to communicate that to the audience. It’s a great example of “show-dont-tell” and, again if I’m right, is an amazing way to reveal the lifestyle of a black Templar marine to the audience.

Astartes in general tend to not understand anything other than War, in fact they don't get Society in general, they don't know what a Feast is, Marriage and Parenthood is alien to them, they don't usually get jokes, ect, with exemptions of a number of them like the Space Wolves and maybe their Chapter Masters, a large number of Astartes just don't get being human at all.

there is even in that one book where a Governor asked 2 Space Marines to join a party, they don't know what a party is so they just stand guard to the point that the guests though they were statues, these are Ultramarines BTW who are known to govern a large part of the Imperium. (yeah Astartes are very slow when it comes to social inter actions but when it comes to their duty be it Warfare or otherwise they excel to a ridiculous degree)

She would put it down to ask "what is this", or "why do they do that" questions, I love it, and I love sharing the lore with her. By the end of the book the was tearing up, I asked her what was wrong she said "his squad..." (I teared up there too when I was reading it not going to lie). By the end of the book she downright cried saying "poor Andre" (that was me too my first reading)

absolutely amazing film, doing the emperors work! one moment I want to comment on is 23:53. it really made me reflect on the power of Guilliman. These are the realities of running a sustainable war effort and it took 9 days to break it all down for 1 city. imagine running that for a whole world, for a system, for an entire crusade? the fury of dorn is amazing but I have definitely been sleeping on the power of administration

Setting aside the fact that Guilliman is a Primarch and would have had the entire forces of the Ultramarines and successor chapters behind him, I do believe that Guilliman would have been able to prepare the entire Hive city for war in mere hours. "If you do what I say, how I say it, when I say it, it will be plenty time". Grimaldis is a leader. An Astartes of legend. But he is no logistician nor a strategical leader. He is woefully inadequate to save the city without sustaining the extreme losses that they did. A full Titan. An Imperator Titan.. which if utilized well probably could have won them the war of Hellsreach.. and destroyed the Orc Titan (I don't know what they are called) with "ease".
Comparing a Astartes to a Primarch is like comparing a human to a Custodes. There is no way to live up to the same expectations. So naturally it is not intended to diminish Grimaldis. He still survived all this without even a hint of thought to flee. He fully intended to die alongside his brothers.
I do believe Hellsreach did have a chance. It would "just" take a Demi-God to actually do it. Or a full Company of Imperial Fists (the whole Chapter probably would have made it easy).
As far as strategical and logistical planning, the war of Hellsreach would have been "easy" for Guilliman. The man wins wars. If he had been present himself as well, the Warboss would have been dead before even wettening his Choppa or firing his Dakka.
