Testing a Few Vacuum Cleaners On My New Carpet - With Best To Worst Ratings

  • In this video I try out a selection of different vacuum cleaners on my newly fitted living room carpet. As the new carpet has a much longer, plusher pile, I thought it would be interesting to see which cleaners could cope with a deeper pile without cutting out or being very hard to push. Skip to 5:58 to get to the vacuums.

      I have to say, this is probably my very favorite TH-cam video ever. It’s now been 7 months since you released it and I watch it every couple weeks. I find it absolutely fascinating to see these vacs of all prices compete against each other on this pile carpet. If I could ever request another video, it would be another one of these with another set of vacuums. Thanks so much for making this outstanding video Roger. I will continue to come back to this one time and time again.

    Congrats on your fabulous new higher pile carpet! As I've been building my testing database, I have found that lower suction, higher airflow machines do better on thicker, denser pile. Many stick vacs, such as Dyson, have too much suction and attempt to clamp themselves to the floor.

    Wow! The motor on that shark vacuum sounds terrible. Why do vacuum cleaner manufacturers have to use such shrill screaming motors? I’d pick a older cleaner over that sound any day, The motor used and that is about the size of maybe a blender motor. I don’t know. great video though as always

    If I paid £900 for a vacuum cleaner that couldn't cope with high pile carpet I would be furious! I think the Sebo Felix with Manual height adjustment would cope and costs less than a third of the price. The V11 another big disappointment.

    Totally agree with your comments and opinion regarding the Dyson cordless. I'm nowhere near convinced that cordless vacs are an equal to corded ones.
    I've used a few cordless vacuums and they seemed to do okay, but when I went over my carpet with a mains powered cleaner the result showed how much the cordless ones have got to improve to match a corded vacuum.

    The hoovers(from the 80's) were made for such carpets, and really do a good job. On such carpets, you really need there power, and as you know, vacuums are becoming weaker, and weaker, due to power limits being put on them.
    But those hoovers(the p[air from 80s), really showed, that you need power over such long pile carpets.

  • @stevejones1972

    So, in short, a 1935 antique Hoover Junior trounced the all singing, all dancing, latest cutting edge technology £600 Dyson V11. You just couldn't make it up. Glad I never "upgraded" from my V8 to a V11. The V11's brushroll motor must be seriously lacking in torque if it cant revolve on a plush pile carpet, I mean, for heavens sake, if an 85 year old antique can cope with it, surely James Dyson could engineer his latest offering to be able to cope. Its not as if cordless vacuums as a whole cant cope with that type of carpet, as the Shark had no issues and the Neato coped too.

    • @spencerwilton5831
      @spencerwilton5831 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Steve Jones Makes sense when you think about it... when that vacuum was made carpets were all, without exception made from wool. They were typically much thicker than cheaper modern carpet and certainly had much denser pile. A vacuum designed for a pre war carpet will fare much better on something resembling it now when compared to a modern cleaner designed more for modern low pile carpet.

    Roger, I think you would love a nice carpet rake for that new carpet (just search Amazon UK for "Prochem Grandi-Groomer Carpet Rake 18" for one example) because it will help you maintain the pile between vacuum sessions (which are probably daily with all of those vacuums to test). You can get your "Zen Garden" thing on with one.
    Also, when you next test a carpet washer, it'll be fun to see that thick pile and see which machines can pull out the water they put down, and which ones don't do so well.
    Congrats on finally getting your new carpets, they are very American!

Or have you been able to use the vorwerk on the carpet since? Thanks

    • @ibaisaic
      @ibaisaic  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I have a VK200 as well and it doesn’t work on this carpet unless on soft mode. The head on my Tiger will not switch off when in the upright position as it used to. Personally I would avoid the type of carpet I show in the video as many vacuum cleaners don’t work on it.

  • @briant5378
    @briant5378 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Though I love the Tiger, its power nozzle really is not designed for deep pile carpets as the brush roll is very thin and delicate. This nozzle seems to be designed for those Scandinavian or German homes that have mostly bare floors and a few low pile Ikea area rugs. Vorwerk should be able to create a more robust power nozzle for deep pile carpets - at least as an optional attachment for their canisters and uprights. Miele's full size power nozzle works very well on deep pile carpets and it has a foot-operated height adjustment. As well, your big Miele upright will definitely deep clean this new carpet with ease....it's highly rated for deep carpet cleaning by America's Consumer Reports.

    I didn't want to say anything on Facebook prior. But I knew the Concept was going to win! They were especially made for Shag and high pile. A Ranger with the 4 postion height adjustment would have also done great!! Here the Convertible was also intended for higher carpet. Yes, it is absolutely normal for the Concept's speed control to be on, even though the machine is off. That how all of them that I have ever seen have been.

      The electronic control reduces and increases the speed of the motor, so in turn it will affect the suction power and the speed of the agitator. As the powerdrive is also connected to the single motor, adjusting the speed will also affect the powerdrive to some degree.

    If you can find one, I would suggest a Panasonic upright with a stiffer US brushroll (barring any technical differences), like you said a Sebo X7, a Kirby, or even a Sanitaire if you can find one of those. After that an older Maytag/Hoover Windtunnel works just fine. A friend of mine recently moved into a house with carpets thicker than yours and I gave my Windtunnel to him to replace two bagless Dirt Devils that were WOEFULLY outmatched. His family filled the bag in a month but it still dug every grain of sand out that his three dogs could track in.

    • @MarcelloTheBandit
      @MarcelloTheBandit 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @Deb I have a 2003 Panasonic-made Kenmore upright that I got from a second hand shop for $40. The reason the previous owner got rid of it was the bag was full and the belt started cracking from age. After ridding it of the evidence of 20 cats and blowing all the carbon dust out of the motor and replacing the brushroll, it rivaled a Maytag era Hoover in pickup. I've had it now since summer of 2012 and it hasn't skipped a beat. I even use it to clean some friend's properties who can't clean very well themselves and so long as the bag isn't packed full, it runs circles around anything brand new around here.

    Dyson's are kind of universally bad on more plush carpet. You really need a machine with adjustable height for that kind of job. That's why vacuums like the American Hoover and Kirby's and the like are designed the way they are with totally manual height adjustments that go *way* up in the air, a left over for houses that still have shag carpet or in the case of electrolux, designed to ride on top of the pile. It's always confused friends I have in Europe why we like these vacuums, but they fail to realize carpet like this is *everywhere* in the US. And you will not convince me that a battery powered vacuum is a replacement for a high powered upright. Perhaps one day, when battery tech gets better and they can be more powerful or go for longer, but I can only complete one floor at a time right now with one on medium mode. It would take me three days to vacuum my house, so that's a big no.

    Hi. I have a very very plush carpet in my lounge, I think it may be even thicker than yours. I found just as you did with your Vorwerk, my Sebo X1.1 will work when its being pushed around, but if you stop, even for a second, it shuts off and the check brushroll light comes on. I found a few cleaners that perform brilliantly on this type of carpet and what I use in my own home are:
    Top 3:
    Any self propelled Kirby
    Hoover Senior 652 series
    Hoover Turbopower
    I mainly use my Kirbys and Senior on it as these clean the best, really deep down, and are easy to push. The Turbopower is brilliant too but they are getting old and the plastic just feels so delicate now so I don't really bother with them although I have several.
    Other cleaners I have found that work and clean it half decent are:
    Hoover Turbopower 2/3
    Hoover Purepower
    Hoover Junior 1354 Series (only the models with height right control on the hood, all the models with the metal bar underneath with numbers 1 or 2 for height cannot cope.)
    Electrolux Stairmaster Backsaver Series (the bagged ones obviousley 🤣)
    Electrolux Z2274
    Morphy Richards Ultralite Bagged Upright Range
    And that's pretty much it.
    Everything else either sticks so hard you can't push it, shuts off or snaps the belt, and a few of them that have variable suction have to have it turned down most of the way so you can push them and then they pick hardly anything up so it's pointless. I have found the ones above are good, so I hope this is helpful. As you said every carpet is different though but this is what works for me. As you posted this 2 years ago though i'm sure you have figured out by now what works and what doesn't, just as I did. There's a few ideas for you anyway.
    Jake

    Surprised that the Dyson cordless had so much trouble but the Shark had little issue through it.

      its because the shark has duo-clean which somehow makes it a hell of a lot easier to push and doesnt stall out the brushroll

      And shocker, the American vacuum worked best on it. I'll freely admit the older style American vacuums kind of suck on low pile or bare floors, but they were designed with shag and the like in mind. My European friends who say stuff like "just buy a cordless [insert brand here, usually a dyson]" make me facepalm every time.

    So many lines of shame can be seen from the cleaners, the carpet is perfect for vacuum reviews.

I'd love to have a panasonic vacuum preferably a jet-flo. Please feel free to watch my video. I'd love to also have an 80s bagged hoover. current vacuum is a Dyson dc15. Love Your Channel!!! ~Xander

Anyhow I recently went in our local currys store,I really had my heart seton the shark cordless but with the battery on i knew I wouldn’t be able to use it for long. Does anyone else find this?

    Think again there is no place to get these fixed when they don't operate properly, they will say yes you can get these serviced but that consists of cleaning them not fixing them.
