- This is to show how easy the modchip is to install on a model 2 (round button) with the 32-pin IC.
Sorry about the last 3 minutes, looks like I did a poor job rendering that one, LOL.
For more info, check out

To purchase, try either RacketBoy's site or Classic Gaming Sega Style.
I followed a course in electricity and despise the fact that my teachers constantly insisted on the fact that Electricity and Electronics are COMPLETELY different, they are nearly the exact same thing.
I watched this video and realised this, there's nothing here that I didn't already learn in my course, thanks for this great tutorial video!
So I installed my chip I just bought. I've only soldered once before, and that was a few days ago. This took me maybe 10 minutes, it's that easy. Thanks for the video!
I actually did end up going with the Sega Style chip. It was pretty much the same as the Racketboy one. I was wrong all along, we both have 32-pin systems. Anyways, installing was a cinch (was nervous since I hadn't touched a soldering iron since forever). But it all worked out in the end, and it's pretty awesome playing these exclusives.
Thanks for the tut by the way, it helped greatly
Ok. For starters; Action Replay bypasses region protection; the modchip only allows you to boot a CD-R. The next update I should tell the Saturn fanatics; Model 1's and Model 2 64-pins can be modded now. ConsoleGoods and Classic Gaming Sega Style has a "UniversalV3" chip. 20 and 21 pin connectors; compatible with everything. Bridged a solder joint; stuck it in my 64-pin Model 2...and good to go.
Saturn only supported 240p mode. This was a non-standard "double-strike" signal that placed the fields over top of each other. I don't think the system had support for true 480i/p modes at all. More processing = more lag.
hey man awesome vid the last 3 minutes where very informative.
You can mod any of them now.
Ordered the v3 Universal for my model 2 21-pin from Sega Style, that's probably the best bet for a Saturn modchip these days.
Grats, man! Just goes to show everyone that if you just give it a try, you can probably do it. Thanks for the tip with the RGB-> Component... Something I will look into in the future.
Though for now, S-Video looks pretty damn good... The fact that it could be even crisper is very inticing.
its a 32 pin. you can tell by the chip on the cd drive.
my sega saturn has compnents mounted to the top power and has cables that connect the two halves. It has oval buttons.
@eeemaster I know. I rarely buy at classic game stores. eBay, amazon, and flea markets. :D
Definitely the Model 2 if you plan on chipping. It's VERY difficult to find/afford a chip for the model 1... otherwise it's a lot of work to get the common model 2 chips to work.
The Bob Ross of modchips.
No, that requires the region switch mod.
6:58 thanks for the complement :)
I did this as you showed and it worked!!! I never even touched a soldiering iron in my life. LOL! So if I could do this then anyone can. I was like a crack head trying to soldier it to. Hands all shaking. Anyway go see the device I use to run your Sega Saturn at component 480I.
yeah, my best friend had a Sega Saturn from the "first batch" & I had a Sony Playstation 1 (back then, Circuit City, where I bought it called it "PSX" on the Receipt...I still have the damn receipt) Neither of us needed mod chips when CDRW drives started to come around...copied and import games just worked...
The Action Replay Cart doesn't allow you to play burned games with it.
You have to mod your Saturn in order to bypass the Saturn's internal security lock-outs. Your Action Replay Cart only allows you to play import games, as well as have a large save memory back up for games, and have 4mb ram for memory intensive games. Hope this helps.
@pantyhouse By "Model 2" I mean the one with the circular buttons instead of the oval ones.
Awesome! Thanks for the info. Time to play SEGATA SANN SHIROU
Could you explain all details ?
Honestly I dont see any lag with none of my systems with my setup.
I think the flux fumes made him Crazy lol
Now that everyone has come to agreement that SS model 1 has oval buttons and SS model 2 has round buttons...
could anyone explain what other differences are between both systems, pros and cons, and if this mod is specific only to model 2 and why?
Thanks for any help or enlightenment...
and thanks Alec for this vid and keeping the Saturn community alive.
great vid, hopefully I can pull it off too!
Why the hell I have a 32 pin saturn and instead of 4 holes for the power supply on the left I have 5 instead?
I have seen that the 64 pin saturn have 5 holes in the left...I'm confused...
Maybe it's because I have a PAL system?
Whats the mod where you need to connect the blue wire to the chip infront of the laser?
could you do a tutorial with the sega saturn model 2 with the sanyo board and universal mod chip?
As long as you have this particular model and cd-board (32 pin chip), yeah. Otherwise, there's some mods you have to do to the chip, which aren't too bad. basically you have to cut the chip down to size for the model 1s (and maybe another variation, can't remember) and rewire a couple pins. Not so easy for those, hah!
Alec, your videos are so helpful. Thank you!
Could you possibly do a follow up video on @phonedork 's recommendation in making a Saturn->RGB->Component adaptor? I happened to be thinking about doing something like this also, and then I read your response to his comment, and now see I'm not the only one.
My plan is to input my Saturn through my LCD monitor's DVI, like my Dreamcast runs through the VGA. I have seen a site that diagrams the Saturn's output pins, so I'm avoiding going through SCART.
haha, I'll throw it in with the Jag whenever we get that shit done.
I snapped the board (well, cracked it, it's still in one piece) so if you sat and rewired it you might get it working. Just didn't feel like trying, which is totally out of the ordinary for me, weird!
If you can find a Model 2 easily (shouldn't be hard) and more importantly, locate someone selling mod chips (I don't know who still has them in stock these days), I would go with that route. Much less effort. Just pop-in and enjoy!
"now go ahead and stick it in" That's what she said! >_
Its tight ooh yeah..OOoOH uea..now thats a modder for realz :p.enjoyed
I checked my Saturn's guts, and all signs point towards a 64-pin motherboard, with the way it looks inside, and the fact that the metal motherboard grill plate doesn't properly align with the outside plastic grill on the console case.
My Saturn's MB looks like yours, with the arrangement of capacitors and all, so I think yours might be a 64-bit.
Your vid might just come in handy for my specific Saturn!
Wait a minute I do have an action replay cart. Dos that mean I can play burned games with that??
Only one I own.
@pantyhouse lol u have to ring up sega and ask them,, haha nah it says underneath the console !
hehe.
Nice info
Didn't know it was that simple.
Really easy to just solder the red wire between modchip and pin motherboard But the same thing applies to the universal modchip? Or depends on the console
@Yoshibirdofan123
Model No.: MK-80000A
What is soddering?
@Yoshibirdofan123
That's what mine says.
I don't remember for sure what mine is, I think it was 32? Could be wrong... and its in storage right now :/
I ordered from RacketBoy, but that was years ago and they were much cheaper back then (plus he seemed to be the only one that had them in stock at the time). I had excellent service on that front, I'd say, but sadly I have no experience with Sega Style.
Holler back if you go that route with your thoughts!
I just did this with a model two with a 64 pin chip in it. All I get is the normal menu with 2 red spheres. From what I red it means the ribbon cable is loose. But I have the chip and cable inserted as tightly as possible. If I put it back to normal it works fine. Dose any one know if there is a way to get it to work, or is my system unable to work with this mod or is my mod chip bad. Any input on how to fix it?
This didn't work for me just gave me a loud hissing nose and it couldn't read the discs =[
google either of the places I listed in the description.
im debating whether i should get a model 1 and disk swap or get a model 2 and modchip
I might end up shelling out the extra $15 for the Racketboy chip...it seems to be universally compatible or something, and quite frankly, SS's instructions aren't the clearest either.
nope, gotta have a modchip to play backups. You would be better off with just a modchip as you can switch the region and burn it as a US game.
Soldering barefoot. Living on the edge.
oh god its tight
thats what he said
where i can buy that mod chip?
are the skeleton saturns easy to mod? they have round buttons
Is your Saturn a 64-pin one? Also, did you get your chip from Racketboy or Sega Style?
SS seems to be the cheaper option for me, so I wanna verify if they're any good, is all.
I just bought a Japanese Saturn. Am i correct in saying you need to solder to the 14th pin and can't do the A to B bridge. Man it would be so much easier your way. Do i pull the pin up or leave it as it is and solier?
lol, thats not how you solder! you tin the tip and put the solder on the iron tip, THEN you move it and let it transfer to the board, after fluxing the surface of course.
there are three versions of the model 2..... a 32 pin, a 64 pin, and a sanyo board. The one in this vid is the 32 pin version. The 64 pin version is nearly impossible to mod. The sanyo board version requires more skill to mod.
@bong264 Hahaha!
I have a model one & a model two (PAL) SS, I would like to mod my Model 2 , probably a silly question?, but does it matter what region your SS is when using this Mod chip?
You remind me of the creepy guy from smosh.
Will this modchip let you play import games as well?
I don't see modding a Saturn/burning games for it as piracy as the developers nor Sega make any money off it (unless there is some super secret Sega store that still sells games & gives money to the devices who are likely out of business/gobbled up) but rather are simply giving your money over to someone, who is likely an asshole who's overcharging you for a used game! LOL.
Great Video. I gotta check if mine is a Model 2 or not :S
oh yeahh!
loool died at the end of the video....you filthy pirate. hahahah
Is Classic Gaming Sega Style legit ?
yes it is just got it
@MYDRAGGIN84 -.-
This video makes me feel sexy
5:42
sex noises
@thatguyontheright1 In the past 5 years I have encountered only 1 honest seller out of every 8. Which is how I came to that conclusion. I am not saying you are one of them. But there is a lot of bad apples in the bunch and very few good ones unfortunately. Keep in mind, people who mod retro consoles do so because they simply want to play it and not collect it. True collectors will always buy originals just like I bought my 200+ SNES/NES/Genesis/N64/NeoGeo Collection
pfffft :D
