Lol, your welcome
I’m brand new at gardening and this helps. Thank you 😊
Welcome!
Thank you. I was finding good videos on starting seeds and planting seedlings out, however up potting is what I need to do next. I was unsure of when to add fertilizer. Your clear explanation is much appreciated.
Glad it was helpful!
4th gardening season for this rookie. I've watched a TON of gardening videos. Came across this one today at lunch. Quality info, man.......SUBSCRIBED.
I'll be watching more.
Awesome, thank you!
They are like Campari tomatoes! Love them!!!

Glad it was helpful!
Great video - great information - subscribed and will be back for more.
Thanks for the great content and sharing.
Awesome, thank you!
Our Lowes and HDepot have a rack where they recycle, I got the flats for those red cups, easy to handle.
They work great for us!
Good information! Thank you tons!
Glad it was helpful!
Yes, all good stuff here. Thanks for them tips.
Can you tell us the dimensions and or mfr. of your hoop house building.
My green thumb wants one on the next farm.🌱
It is 21’x60’ it’s made by Poly-Tex we bought it used, took it down and moved it to our farm last year, lots of work but worth it.
Those exact cups are what I use for my transplants. 2 years ago I couldn't get my plants into the ground for 4 months ... and guess what? They just exploded and did super well staying in those cups. Don't recommend that as they need to be outside sooner but ... was shocked as how big they got in those cups.
They work great for us too
Thanks for the tips. I’m a newbie gardener.I’ll let you know how it works for me. By the way what is a good month to move them to the ground
Folks, save all those sour cream, yougurt, ricotta containers to start your seeds.
Absolutely!
New subscriber, great content ,
We have been buying from hoss for years ,
Great informative content on the chilinan nitrogen.
I will be ordering from Greg .
God bless you all

Thanks for the sub!
Great job! Learned a lot. I’ve been buying from Hoss for a couple years
Awesome! Thank you!
Thank you new to your channel
Thanks for subbing!
I’m in zone 2b so it will be awhile before I can start my seeds. Great video
Thank you
Good info, thank you. I decided to look up your farm location, and it turns out that I was in your neighborhood this morning. I was en route from Raeford to Gastonia to get a truckload of compost but it got cancelled so I turned around on 74 right by Rockingham.
That is awesome!
Great video, thanks. I can't believe you use those super tiny trays though. I know far too well how quickly those things dry out. Happy gardening 😋
Thanks for watching!
Thanks for sharing your video. 👍 New subscriber to your channel. I will be using this technique this year.
Thanks for the sub!
Subscribed to your channel. My head spins with the amount of info out there to grow seedlings. I like the idea of staying with sterile soil for potting up. Can you tell me how much peat/Garden Tone ratio that was in the bucket making the potting up mix?
It’s roughly 10 qts. Of soil to 4 oz of garden tone, give or take a bit on either end.
I transplanted my cherry tomatos waaaay too soon, when they just sprouted with 2 tiny leaves. Will wait longer next time.
Been there done that Lol
New subsriber here !
Thanks for subbing!
Love the videos. Just put up first 30x12 tunnel. Lots to learn. Love to see video of start to finish day on the farm. Average people don't know the work it takes to run your farm. Even the maintenance. Thanks for tips.
Might be one coming up
Thank you. Great video. I am just working this year to produce in tunnel. Then next year plan to sell at farmers market. But watching and learning for now. Best way to learn to keep mouth shut and listen. Lol.
Good luck!
Feel free to reach out with any questions on building your zimmerman HT! My son and I completed ours last year. I chose steel base/hip boards, polycarb steel slider doors (there are some tricks to installing these) supply/exhaust fans, double layer, W design for more stability.
Thank you, I’ll do that!
I use 300-400 watt LED grow lights. Not a 48" tube, these are box shaped. About 12" x8" x2" tall. These almost blind me if you look directly into the LEDs.
Great success with seedlings in red solo cups, holes in bottom, sitting in a clear solo cup, with 2-3 marbles to hold up the red cup for water reservoir space. This water space gets filled with roots fairly quickly.
Thanks for sharing
Great content, will adopt. When you bottom water in your “totes”, can you explain that process. Top water with just water then how much to to water with your Chilean in the tote? Do you just put in a 1/2” of depth and allow your starts to suck it up? I am assuming you probably do not flood the tote and leave your plants super wet all the time, but this is new for our family this season, working with more plants and really focusing on producing a quantity of food for our family ourselves. Appreciate you my brother🇺🇸
I only add enough water that its used in 30 minutes or so, I keep a bucket handy to dump the rest in then I use my Newtry injector to top water in my root garden.
USA - Up potting. U.K. - Potting on.
Love this info video. 1 scoop to 5 gal water. Is that 1/8c or 1/4c size scoop? I won’t need 10lbs but would like to share with others for success to. I’m a newbie so I share what I hear even if I haven’t tried it yet. Thanks for sharing and great knowledge.
That’s 1.5 tablespoons
❤❤❤awesome video. Hey where y’all at in NC. I’m in Thomasville NC
Richmond county
I just ran across your video and channel today. Thank you for the great info. I'm not a total newbie at gardening, but still very early on in it. I subscribed and liked this video and appreciate the info. I do have one question, however. If you addressed it in the video, I missed it, and even watched the section again and didn't catch it. What I'd like to ask is, once I up pot my seedlings and they are established, how often is the bottom feeding done? Is it only when it needs watered, or?
Only when needs if the top layer looks a little dry, add water but only enough that will be absorbed in 10 minutes or so, don’t want to drown your plants.
I really like your shelf unit with the offset upper shelf. Did you make it? Buy it somewhere?
It was part of the tunnel when I bought it, it was a propigation house we converted to a high tunnel
Red cup and feed , you’re welcome ☺️
Thanks
I'm curious what could go wrong by putting fertilizer in your seed starting mix. Could you explain that? I'm always learning!
It’s really unnecessary because the seedling has everything it needs to get to the true leaf stage. When you use fertilizers in your seed starting mix you invite the growth of algae, weeds, mold, all of which will compete with your seedling for moisture, nutrients etc.
Love your video. I started my seeds in the Solo red 9 oz cups they doing very well 4" tall i also have fan going. I started them in the seeds starting soil. What do suggest to fertilize them with?
Once they get true leaves you can use a light balanced fertilizer very lightly until you see growth and just adjust as they get bigger. Go lightly until you see a reaction then adjust from there
Thank you for replying back.
How often should I use the nitrate & water? I’m a beginner. Most things I’ve read have said every 2 weeks.
You can use it once a week with no problems
Great video. I have a question about the Chilean Nitrate. Once up potted do you use this solution every time you water?
Yes, at a diluted rate but no more than every other day
How often do you fertilize with the chilean nitrate? Once in the ground, what are your specs for fertilizing? Thanks for the great video!
Until the plants bloom I use the 15-0-2 once a week, after they bloom I use less nitrogen and fertilize every other day.
Wow, fertilize every other day? That must cost a small fortune! Thanks for the quick feedback. @@LickBranchFarms
It’s a smaller amount just more consistent. Consistency with irrigation is key to keep from splitting big tomatoes once they start to ripen.
Great video. I may have missed it, but do you give the younger plants the recommended dosage of the Chilean Nitrate or a reduced amount? thank you
A reduced amount, generally I use 1/2 teaspoon per gallon until I up pot then switch to 1 1/2 tablespoons per 5 gallons.
Thanks@@LickBranchFarms
Thank you for a great video. I’ve up-potted my tomatoes and was wondering how often to use the nitrogen feeding? Right now I use AgroThrive once a week and plain water in between. The Hoss Chilean Nitrate on Amazon was $45 for 10lb and I purchased the Power Grow 15.5-0-0 calcium nitrate $16 for 5 lb which is plenty for me and not OMRI. I noticed the Hoss is a sodium nitrate. Is it ok to use the Power Grow with same results as Hoss? Will the nitrogen feeding work with up-potted pepper plants? Thank you and I’m subscribing to your excellent channel.
It’s ok, the only difference is one is Organic and the other is synthetic, once your plants start fruiting up your fertilizing to twice a week,
Do you straight Black Gold Peat Moss rather than Black Gold potting mix?
Yes Straight black Gold peat Moss, some potting mixes contain a wetting agent that isn't OMRI listed.
Cheers 😊 any tips help
No problem 👍
Serious question: where do you store your fertilizer. Is it okay to leave in a greenhouse all year? Thanks for the tips!
I keep mine in a 5 gallon bucket with a snap on lid. It stays in the barn out of the sun.
Greenhouses too humid
So the sun gro black gold peat moss is what you are using as a seed starting mix so do you screen it before you use it or just use it straight out of the bag?
I do screen it through a 1/2” screen
@@LickBranchFarms Thank you
For the Hoss Nitrogen fertilizer, if you were watering from the top, how frequently would you add the fertilizer. Every time you water? Once a week?
About the same, over head watering seems to take more water for the same purpose
Hello, so you plant your seed in straight up peat moss? Im new to gardening
Yes, with a little Perlite or vermiculite, once they germinate you can transplant them into regular potting soil. You want to use a sterile seed starting mix like Peat moss to begin with.
I breed coturnix Quail . i have been composting their dropping for 7 month's. Can i use this vs. nitrogen? I'm new to gardening and have tons of seedlings sprouting
Yes you can, quail droppings are not as hot as chicken in my opinion but yes, go for it!
Do you just use the Chilean nitrate/water directly on the base or do you feed them a different way?
For starts still in trays I water at the base, once transplanted I water through drip tape
Just found your channel Sub’d 👍🙏🏼 the tiny seed to little leaves, ? Just water, ? Red cups with same organic peat moss & after shock over 1-2 weeks or more, ? Then the 5 gallon water with 1 1/2 green scoop fertilizer, - are you watering from the top? Or bottom? If bottom then a few wholes on bottom? Sorry I’m a brand new starter for growing plants this spring. Thank you for sharing 🙏🏼
Just water till they get their first true leaves, once you up pot then add the 3-4-4 to your peat, shouldn’t take maybe a week to get over the shock, but bottom water from there on out, tomatoes don’t like to have their leaves wet. Hope this helps!
@@LickBranchFarms Yes, this helps! TKU 🙏🏼👍
Quick question. What would be non heavy feeders. I always hear people talk about heavy feeders but lets be honest that is most veggies. I'm thinking salads, radish things like that are perhaps on the low end. I think its easier to say what isn't a heavy feeder than what is. I've gardened forever, well since I could get in the dirt with my parents and we never fed anything but we always had a big compost pile and then made liquid manure (so yes feeding in that sense). My dad won awards at fairs for veggies and he always just made liquid manure feed. Sorry that was long winded and off subject.
I’ve always thought of salad greens like lettuce, and chard as light feeders. Beets are another one that I’ve heard isn’t a heavy feeder.
Do you drill holes in the bottom of the Solo cups to bottom water?
yes, 5 holes in the bottom is usually enough.
I use scissors, I used to drill holes in several cups at a time. I also tried melting holes in the cups. I got the scissors method from plant abundance. He was good at thinking outside of the box, but he went down a rabbit hole and stopped making videos.
I have never liked Black Gold soil. Always get compost gnats!
Never had that problem
Never had that problem
What brand, model is your high tunnel?
Poly tek 20x60
Will the Chilean nitrate work the same with peppers?
Absolutely!
What’s your all time favorite snacking tomato?
I like Sungold cherry tomatoes, if you get them just right there’s nothing sweeter.
@@LickBranchFarmsSunSugar is also a prolific sweet cherry tomato! I grow it by request for many family members and neighbors because their kids love eating them..
Chocolate sprinkles hands down the best ❤
Tomatoes
Thank you for the correction
Thanks for the great information! (The correct spelling for your title is "Tomatoes", with no apostrophe.)
