Qor makes a really nice masking fluid. It removes easily, I don't remember a strong smell and it's easy to use. It's not very expensive either and you get a big jar.
Going to try this one. Did a. Birch tree painting some time ago Turned out good but it took a long time ! As you say, the more you look the more you see. Hmmm.

I have been with Craftsy since they started and still have all my original classes. Excellent classes.
I store my masking fluid upside down which helps to prevent it from drying out.

My favorite watercolor for shadows is DS Moonglow. It has a lovely granulation with hints of grayish purple. It works well in all the values, too.

Maybe try masking tape or craft tape in place of masking fluid?
