I know this was 5 years ago, but I absolutely love this! This is the best demo I’ve seen on neocolor II, I just purchased a set and don’t know where to start, but you helped to make it less intimidating! Thank you
I've had my crayons for a few years now. I grew bored with them very quickly, but you are the first person I've seen offer gesso as an alternative to water. You have restored my interest in my crayons, and I can't wait to try this technique. I truly love your work, and thank you for the renewed inspiration.
Chocolate Butterfly aww! Warms my heart! I am glad I could get you excited about using your Crayons again! I am glad I could inspire you to use them in a new way ❤️
I felt the same way after watching this video! I had these crayons for years and thought about giving them away. After watching this video I am inspired to use them again. Also this painting/drawing is gorgeous.
Kiara's Studio I tried it! And I like it! Feels so much as painting (I don't paint usually, I mean I don't use acrylics and oils, never did) Thank you again ❤️
Kiara I loved how you gave your examples of usage, in the beginning of your video and all the supplies you used! Love the artwork too. I did buy the 30 color set, thanks to your video. I can't wait to try them!
This is brilliant! I would never have thought of using gesso with watercolour crayons! You are amazing! I too, am lazy when it comes to clearing up and cleaning brushes, etc. This is something I will definitely try. Thank you Kiara - have a great weekend. I look forward to you next video :)
Thank you for sharing and I love the portrait, she’s beautiful. I love both, Caran D’Ache neocolor’s,water soluble and water resistant. I loved carols crayons when I was a child and still get tingles seeing them at the dime store in the fall. The Caran D’Ache neocolors just take my breath away! I was so very lucky to discover and purchase 126 set of the Neocolor ii’s in February! Sadly, it was discontinued, not sure when, and 42 colors were, also, discontinued. Neocolor 1’s 84 set was discontinued, I can’t find out when or why and I can’t find the 44 discontinued colors. I’m loving the colors I have and want to find out how to use them to their full potential. So glad I found You! Fran
Wow!!! I love it! I bought these crayons recently, but I haven't had time to test them yet. Watching your video made me want to do it right now. You're a super artist!
Thank you ! I bought a few of these crayons out of curiosity. Tried them big fail ,thought i wasted money ! Now I know how to use them,I'll be buying more ! Inspiring work, I loved your painting ❤
Hey girl, I’ve just stumbled across you, but I wanted to let you know how stunning and effortless you made this piece seem....I was researching the Caron Dache crayons, which led me to you....I will now hang out within your channel and see what you are all about.... but already I can see that you are very talented and down to earth....All lovely qualities,.....Thank you.....Cathy
Kiara you are an amazingly awesome artist !! I just bought a box of the caran dache neocolor II crayons 30 colors. I am still using them to do loose watercolor florals . Can’t believe that you can use them for portraits !! Wow your work is outstanding! Thanks for the video.
I love this! I just bought a "Artists Loft Water Soluble Wax Pastel Set" at Micheal's and can't wait to start! Enjoyed watching you create this picture and teaching us! God Bless!
That's beautiful! I've never seen anyone use them like that. I've been lusting after these things for years, and after watching this video I want them more than ever! I just have to save up enough cash to get the complete set, though.
These are not crayons. Girl your portraiture is spot on! Not many people can capture skin like you! Your picture is amazing but I feel like it was better and more realistic without adding the black lines. Wow good job on the skin! Thank you
gorgeous! I love caran d'ache products. I have some of their colored pencils and adore them! I've seen these crayons, but have been afraid to try then because paint and I aren't friends right now.... Love the colors in her skin, and how they create the smooth contoures.
Farah Ware thank you! And I've totally been there. I've fought with products before. I like to try new things then come back to my old love with a fresh pair of eyes
Your video is so interesting! Thank you to give an alternative to water with gesso! I quickly get bored with Neocolor because of the traces made by water.... It sems that we can keep the intensity of pigments with clear gesso without any trace.....and get a smoothy effect with white gesso and for the faces it s so satisfying! You re so talented, I love the portrait in the demo!
I love this girl you created ... She has so many textures and tones I see her as many different race and that's so neat to me... Sorry if I'm wrong in any way just thought she could be either and it doesn't matter.. she's just a person. Also I'm just seeing these crayons for the first time... Amazing. Great art work..
Awesome demonstration! I just discovered your channel after scouring videos on how to use water soluble oil pastel crayons. I was digging in my stash and discovered this gem that I want to now give a try. I love that you showed the various ways to use them in the forefront of the video and then did an actual demo. NEW SUBBIE! Thanks for sharing!
1st, I love that painting. I agree that they are pricey, but because they last so long, well, like you said they are well worth it. Thanks for sharing this. You're an amazing artist "Subscribed"!!
Sooo very beautiful. Also thank you for showing us how u use them. I just bought a tin of 30 & was a little unsure on to use them. I found u method of blending them with gesso very interesting & I totally love the end product. I'll definitely try u method. Have a great day.
Your artwork is gorgeous! The crayons are expensive, I’ve drooled over them for a couple of years lol. Seeing how you work with them definitely makes me think they are worth the splurge! ❤️
Love this technique. Makes your art glow :) You would be so amazing with oils tho. The smell and the ritual of getting everything ready is really part of the zen. Can't wait to see you give it try.
You have such a calm laid-back manner of presenting. A pleasure to watch and listen. I had recently given some very carefully worded constructive criticism to a very talented professional well-known TH-cam artist. The speed she talks is unbelievable that I am amazed anybody could follow, let alone learn anything; such a shame. You are totally different though in your easy-going manner. Don't ever change 😁.
capyboppy lol I can be pretty hard to follow sometimes as well if I may be perfectly honest with you. I don't think she's doing it to purposely confuse her audience. It is something we have to learn to avoid! Thank you for taking the time to comment. I appreciate you ❤
Kiara's Studio after watching your video and that of someone else's; I bought a single crayon to try and I am hooked. I have a tin of 15 coming tomorrow, can't wait. Wish I could afford a larger set but there is always the future or adding what I want to them colourwise.
capyboppy yes that is how I do my art supply shopping as well! They mix really well with each other so you don't need hundreds of colors but I have my eyes on the metallic ones 👀
awesome painting, I have a set of 40 I really wished I had the patients to save up for the 120 set! I really like the idea of using the clear gesso for a change but using water I love ,thanks again for this video, have a creative weekend!
Very cool work, beautiful 😻💐💗 As you talked about oils,I would say try out Cobras watersoluble oil paints, huge tubs, very good quality, price.all can be washed, cleaned with water, can be used watercolours to enpasto textures..I hated oils, smell, cleaning up with strong chemicals was not for me at all,but these ones, love them! Used to work a lot with acrylics abut lately all is watercolours and these oils..love how grate it looks when it’s finished compared to general acrylics, alive, oily, how well they cover, blend, love those paints and would advise to try out if wanna try any oils go watersoluble 😉🍀👍🏻 cool video and I loved you’re work a lot!
Thank you for presenting a video that was informative and to-the-point. I see so many art videos where the presenter just goes on and on about nothing. I suppose there are people who enjoy that approach but my time is limited so I tend to skip through, those videos, so I will have time to watch really informative ones like this one.
Betty Schueler a lot of my videos go on about nothing... sorry if that’s not your cup of tea! I’m glad you were able to enjoy at least a one of my videos though ❤️
Kiara, my expiration date has long passed so I have to make the best time of what I have left. In my case, the next minute isn't guaranteed, so I have to be really selective about which videos to watch all the way through and which ones to just scan for new pieces of useful information. This video offered lots of new information and that is why I was glad I didn't have to scan through it.
Thank you so much for the gesso + neocolor tip! It is really awesome, now I can put down more layers, and they still have intense and matte colours, just like with acryl gouache. :)
@@KiarasStudio Hi! Can I have a question? (I got super excited trying out clear gesso with neopastels after your video. :) My order finally arrived, I also got the Liquitex clear gesso. ) How do you handle the extreme "toothyness" of this product? It was awesome to make the crayons blend with white gesso, so I have naively poured from the transparent one in a small cup and started to blend my drawing. And oh my, it got completely ruined! It looked like if I covered my paper with sawdust. It is so grainy, that I could not put a second layer nicely. It also does not dry transparent, it has a very unpleasant yellowish tone. What's the trick? Thanks a lot!
I have never seen someone use gesso as a solvent for watercolor crayons! THATS amazing!! I wonder if gesso would have a similar effect on water soluble oil pastels.
Omg the piece is so gorgeous! Watching you work is so inspiring. I've never gave any thought to water soluable crayons before, I knew about water soluable pencils but this seems more like something I'd prefer :D I'm so glad I'm not the only "lazy" artist out there 😂 oils really deter me because of the reasons you mentioned. Have you ever tried/considered water soluable oils however? I used to have a set but it was really cheap and awful, so I didn't get a good experience with those, but now that I've heard about and seen works with Holbein aqua oils I'm tempted to get those too. great video and review btw
Just beautiful. I just received these as a gift and love them. I always put it on paper and then apply water. Now I can try it the way you do it. Thanks for the tips and your artwork is glorious. Do you have a website?
THIS IS AWESOME!!! COULD YOU USE MATTE OR GLOSS MED INSTEAD OF GESSO? THEY USE TO MAKE A SMALL PORTRAIT SET IN THESE. I HAVE BUT NEVER HAVE USED. YOUR TUTORIAL MADE ME WANT TO TRY THIS. REALLY GREAT!
Wow! I never would have thought of using gesso to blend these. They are expensive m but they have a good pigment load, and you can use spray which doesn’t work well on oil pastels. The other con is that the colors are limited and the more neutral tones need to bought one at a time.
Carol Tensen I definitely agree with everything you said. And yea, I never knew to mix them with gouache either. I just experimented lol gotta play with your art!
Art in general is expensive lol, but they're definitely worth it. I appreciate you showing them off cuz now that's more supplies I need to get lol. I think I had some before, or whatever. Maybe they were oils. I could be wrong lol
Fantastic painting wow. I was worried about the eyes till u put the black on then they reallly worked. Do u find the crayons still reactivate even after blended with gesso?
I was thinking it's great, but she gave her beady eye's. LOL, But of course B4 you were finished you worked on them more & they look great. LOL Isn't it funny how, well my art has an ugly faze B4 it starts looking good. Painting is beautiful. I've been wanting the Neo color ll for a very long time now. But like you said they are so expensive. I think I'm gonna try to get a small set, then buy a couple at a time from the open stock. Probably be the only way I'll ever get them. I really liked the way you used them. TYFS
Hi! I was rewatching one of your sketchbook tours, and you have a lot of full page pencil drawings. Do you ever do anything to prevent the lead from smudging onto the opposite page? Like do you add any spray fixatives or anything, because i tend to have that problem. You're a lovely, lovely artist!
Hi Kiara!! I know it's been a hot min since you made this video, but I am just starting my exploration of neocolor i and ii, and I'm highly attracted to the way you use your nciis'... I just wish I could recreate it lol...I was wondering, what would it take to get you to make more videos like this one??! If you can't tell, I enjoyed it (might have it memorized, seen it so many times now lol, not that it means I can do it as you can though)... This is the best video I could find and I bet you that a lot of people like me are looking for these exact kinds of ncii videos, right now! Thank you so much for your valuable input into the art community
Gorgeous painting. I was just wondering if it’s white or clear gesso you used to help blend the colors? In the beginning, it showed clear but then you said you were using white. I might have missed something lol so sorry if that’s a silly
K.S. Taylor no problem I understand the confusion but I am using both lol it depends on the effect you want. Mostly used the white for the skin because it helped brighten some of the darker colors. Hope this helps
Kiara's Studio it does :). Thanks so much for answering so quick. I’ve been curious about these, so I’ve been trying to do research first lol. Do they blend any with just your fingers like gelatos do?
I wish I could see this in real time, what colors you used, what brushes, did you use water? , and was the background clear gesso and the was the face only white by gesso?
Water soluble oil paints aren't as messy or smelly. They are easier to clean up. You can use palette paper if you don't want to scrape paint of a regular palette.
These kind of videos convince you to buy the product. Total win.
I know this was 5 years ago, but I absolutely love this! This is the best demo I’ve seen on neocolor II, I just purchased a set and don’t know where to start, but you helped to make it less intimidating! Thank you

Yep, this added some new interest in these crayons! Overpainting with Gesso??? hmmm.
Omg!!! I have and love neocolors but had no idea you get this beautiful blending with white gesso!!! Thank you for sharing this! So glad I found you!
Da's other worlds thank you! I'm happy you found me as well ❤

Brava! I've gained a renewed interest in playing with my Caran d'Ache
Wow! Thank you for the tips. I love how smooth the skin looks.
The white gesso removes all the streaks. And really smoothes it out beautifully. Great demonstration video.
Amazing!!! I didn't know something like watercolor crayons even existed.
Anyways, the video was quite interesting to watch.
Samreen Art thank you! I'm glad I could introduce you to a new product.
That's beautiful! I've never seen anyone use them like that. I've been lusting after these things for years, and after watching this video I want them more than ever! I just have to save up enough cash to get the complete set, though.
GummyTumor yea they are pretty pricey but worth the money! Thank you, I hope you enjoy them when you get them ❤
Kiara's Studio I'm so glad I subscribed to you, this is soooo beautiful! And now I need some Neocolors!

I hope you show more paintings using the watercolor crayons! Wonderful!
Using gesso as a medium for blending the crayons? Amazing! I am going to try this. I have had trouble getting a smooth finish like you do! Thanks!
OMG WOW, she’s absolutely gorgeous!! Thanks for the tips, never thought of using gesso with them. Tfs
Kim F thank you for watching! I’m glad I could help a little!

Blissfulthings thank you! You too my dear!
Awesome video! Great idea for the Gesso and the pros and cons. I am a lazy artist as well and need to keep it simple. I hate mess and clean up as well
Amazing. I bought the neocolours but didn’t know what to do with them. Thanks for the video x
Amazing drawing. I just purchased Stabilo Woodies. I think I'll try them with gesso, see if they'll work the same way.
Wow brilliant with crayons!!!

Very nice! What kind of paper? How do I get that smooth effect?
I’VE HAd mine for awhile. Enjoyed the demo. I do have a question. Do you use a fixative after you are done?
Yes I do two light coatings of a workable fixative then follow up with a regular fixative.
TYFS
Awesome. What type of brush do you use for the details in the eyes
Hi! I was rewatching one of your sketchbook tours, and you have a lot of full page pencil drawings. Do you ever do anything to prevent the lead from smudging onto the opposite page? Like do you add any spray fixatives or anything, because i tend to have that problem. You're a lovely, lovely artist!
Boho Stevie Nicks hi! I use krylon workable spray fixative on my pencil sketches. I hope that helps!
Kiara's Studio Wow thank you! Do you find a difference considering its a workable kind? Like do you draw with a second layer on some bits?
Boho Stevie Nicks yea I use a workable fixative so I can go back and add things or even do watercolor on top of it
Me encantó !!! Pintas espectacular felicidades
Yessenia Horna Martinez thank you ❤️
Seriously gorgeous!!!!!! How long have you been doing faces?
I love your CARAN D'ACHE WATER SOLUBLE CRAYONS REVIEW
Really great presentation and especially for me as a beginner
Watching you work on pieces is so riveting ✨😅
x__Imagination__x lol thank you darling!
Thank you so much for your valuable input into the art community
yaaayy!!!! Saw this on your instagram, but I had homework.... Finally getting around to watching the video... Love it!!!
Peter Johnson thank you for all your support and make sure you get that homework done!
Haven’t tried it but I don’t think so. They don’t have that texture
WOW It's Amazing I love this video you did great job‼😍
Jan Beasley thank you Jan ❤️
Beautiful work
this is beautiful!
You're so talented!
Diane Terrizzi thank you! Lots of hard work.
Kiara's Studio, Yes but you are blessed with talent too!
Do you use the gesso straight up or do you dilute it when you paint over the crayons? Beautiful artwork, btw!
Jean MacDonald I used it straight out of the jar. ❤️
VERY VERY BEAUTIFUL... YOU ARE UNCREDIBLE! Big hug
Your also talking about Karen D' really can't go wrong with those. For the quality id say they're oretty reasonable😊
I agree. Very expensive and it’s much more here in Canada. But they are very good. Btw, beautiful work.
Amazing art!
Girl, you did an awesome job,I live in Canada and Karen Darche is expensive, very expensive.
I haven't tackled faces and skintone etc. Mine always turns out crappie. Lol yours is awesome,
You are very talented, thanks for sharing 👩🏻🎨
Nasrin Davallou haha thanks! ❤️
I wish I could see this in real time, what colors you used, what brushes, did you use water? , and was the background clear gesso and the was the face only white by gesso?
They really look like fun.
BEAUTIFUL!
Love the splatter effect
Well done!!
Water soluble oil paints aren't as messy or smelly. They are easier to clean up. You can use palette paper if you don't want to scrape paint of a regular palette.
Thank you for your thoughtful insight. If I ever dabble with oils I will make sure I start with water soluble thanks to you!
