File this under 'things I wish I didn't know existed because, now that I'm aware, I'll have to dig deep and buy one'. 😮‍💨

Very good, detailed box set review Mike. (Almost) no doubt the MD estate requested, if not mandated, the modest photoshop edit on In A Silent Way cover.
The pressings are great after simple cleaning, the box presentation is excellent-kudos to VMP, and the sound of 4 albums, so far, equal to or superior to my MFSL copies. Lastly, I really like having these "later Miles" albums all grouped!
    Thanks for the review.

Absolutelty great review, Mike. I ordered this set as soon as it was announced, and only had the MOFI version for 'In A Silent Way' (I'm sure I paid $40.00 for it on Amazon in 2015 - how prices have changed). This period of Miles might not be for the faint of heart, but it's sooooooo cool.

Great review of this box set, Mike! 👍👍👍 I don't really want all of those albums, but I'll have to see if the ones I want are available individually. Thanks! 👍💖🎸😎

I totally agree with your review Mike, well done. Feels like there is more information, top and mid range, that’s not EQ’d. Particularly when I AB’d with my MoFi copies. They are my go to copies for now.

Hi Mike, I did a video as well on this great VMP set. I'm glad we came to the same conclusions VMP vs the MoFi, even listening on a modest system like mine. I noticed the same differences especially for IASW & Jack Johnson. JJ really comes alive on the VMP version!

Glad to hear your thoughts vs. the MOFI's - I dont own those but I do have OGs and early pressings and I think this box bests those. I think they did an amazing job with this and I hope they do a live version too - they teased that a little on the podcast that comes with this.

Yeah that Jack Johnson grooves, it has that feeling of always building towards an unknown outcome. You can envision a fighter in the ring sparring, moments of doubt but mostly solid punches landed with a solid dance around your opponent.

I’m a huge fan of VMP, certainly for hip hop, they’re the top in the business, mostly because they’re titles no one else is doing, but I also have 3 anthology boxes, and I had no idea about the music, but the presentation, the accompanying podcast, the booklets, it elevates them beyond just the music, it really does become an experience. I would say to anyone, aim to at least try an anthology that grabs your attention, they are truly superb. BUT, I think VMP have cottoned on to how popular they are getting because my oh my are prices rising. The new 3 disk Diary of Alicia Keys does look pretty special with a linen wrapped jacket, BUT it’s $135 which is really quite nuts, that’s above UD1S price! I’m not sure they’ve quite reached that mark. But superb review, I don’t know much of miles Davis, but the older I get, the more I appreciate discovering the classics and it is a stunning set.

The cover of In A Silent Way was a portrait photographed by the great Lee Friedlander. The VMP cover does look more similar to the other photographs he took of Miles. The darkening of the original album cover really doesn't look like those portraits.

Thanks for the review! These are some of my favourite jazz records. I have listened to an OG and a MoFi reissue of Bitches Brew back to back. To my ears, the OG totally smoked the MoFi for detail, dynamics, tonal balance, excitement, ... it was soooo much better in just about every regard.

Mofi always get smoked, their pressings are severely overrated and that strip across the top ruins the artwork imo

Did you check out the Miles Davis box Third Man did? I never heard much about it, was wondering if anyone out there heard it. They fudged up the Syd Barrett box, it’s November and they haven’t even started shipping the rest of the boxes yet.

If they made a box set like this for the Second Great Quintet era (64-68 -- E.S.P., Miles Smiles, Sorcerer, Nefertiti, Miles in the Sky, Filles de Kilimanjaro, and the My Funny Valentine live album), I would literally cry and buy it in a heartbeat, the Second Great Quintet era is easily my favorite era of Miles, just great record after great record. I really hope VMP does it, because I know the packaging and overall presentation will be stellar as it is here

I was on the fence getting the set since I got mofi copies of the first 3 albums (Silent, Bitches, and Jack). But, Mikes ears have never let me down, so I just pulled the trigger. Also, he has an uncanny ability to drive demand soon after these shoot out videos get released. 😂

Get up with it is my Fav (in that stack) .. for particular reasons.. . amazing lengthy excursion of left over cuts that they pushed out and was ignored for decades - one generic blues cut thats kind of a dud the one with Purdie playing drums . Of course high lights on every album Silent Way the precursor ! I have every Canada 1st press. what does the labels look like on Get UP With it.. ?

On the fence about this. Not the biggest fan of RKS mastering. I have his “Black Saint and The Sinner Lady” and “Journey In Satchidananda” and they’re both very fatiguing, and I would say annoying to listen to on my NAD 7240PE> Boston Acoustics A100s. Granted those speakers lean a bit on the bright side, but it’s rarely if ever an issue, these 2 titles are the only instances I can really think of.
When I route the amp out to the other room where my Polk 8t’s are, which is a warmer speaker by comparison, those 2 albums do sound great, but they’re pretty much unlistenable on the Boston’s, which is my main vinyl setup.

I've got the four MoFi entries and agree: the VMP JJ, BB, and OtC beat the MoFi (and, in the case of JJ and OtC, by some distance). I think In A Silent Way is closer. As you indicate, the MoFi is perhaps smoother, whereas the VMP sounds 'hotter'. I agree that the VMP is perhaps closer to the tape in terms of sonic choices, but I can definitely see some people preferring the MoFi.

So are the MoFis slightly inferior because they copied to DSD instead of using a tape copy or is it because of their mastering choices? My thoughts are probably both. I’m yet to be convinced that copying a master tape to DSD is better than keeping it in the analog domain by using a tape copy when the master started life in the analog domain.
