“It’s really cold in Minnesota” There are 48 other states to choose from other than Minnesota and San Francisco lol. Then move to a new state where you can get a bigger better house for your budget.
If you didn’t notice while watching the video, it was mentioned that the family is seeking “Silicon Valley dreams”. In case you didn’t know, Silicon Valley is the technology capital in the US... that being said, there is no other state that could offer a job that pays 500k/Year starting off, while doing what you love. With that being said, cost of living in SF reflects from opportunities which surround the area. I’m finding that their problem doesn’t stem from not having enough money, it stems from the fact that they were a little ignorant about the area before moving in. They should have took a little more time to research the essentials which would guarantee them a smooth transition. Not only is San Francisco not a state, like you claim in your comment, but it is one of the only options considering the dreams these people set out to accomplish. Minimum wage in San Francisco is literally more than double, than what it is in most other states. You’re correct, you can get a mansion for a million dollars in other places, but that means they’d have to downgrade their entire lifestyle to something they don’t WANT. When you’re busting your ass for your money, you’re going to go out and get what you want. California is literally, probably the ONLY state in all of US that could be considered a first world state, maybe that’s what they want.
Minnesota is only cold from mid November to early March, it gets over 100 degrees here in the summer. People act like we’re Antarctica or something and it’s cold all the time.
with that money they can get a decent single family home in daly city or south sf, probably better schools, and they can drive or take bart to work, which takes them less than 30 mins to get to sf downtown, it’s not like they have no options
The property tax alone on a $1.2 milllion dollar Bay Area fixer upper is around $15,600 a year. That's $1300 a month. On top of that you have mortgage, water, gas, electric, garbage pickup, fire insurance to pay. Then you have to pay huge bills for contractors to put the plumbing, electrical, heating, drain pipes, roofing in shape and maybe have to do asbestos abatement. If you do a certain dollar amount by building permit, the County may require you to update other things like install double pane windows and do seismic foundation bolting. Something tells me that we are on a speeding bus heading toward a cliff and the driver just died of a heart attack.
That's about the only way to do it there, or live in an RV, but you are probably better off on a boat in Cali that is mooring off a structure unconnected to the mainland.
First world problems. “Their budget is only $1.1 million. They’ve been looking for more than 4 months. The home ended up selling for well over $2 million.” Oh the struggle for this poor family. Even the news is silly and pretentious in San Francisco. Median home price in US is still $200,000. Move to a different area like Minneapolis, take a lower paying job and live your life. People want to live near water. It’s expensive. Get over it.
I find it ironic and poetic justice that the very people that drove the locals out now can't afford to live here. LMAO. It's really sad people who weren't born here are considering leaving. Not! My husband and I grew up here, and live in the same neighborhood as these two. Our rent is $2,800 a month they have options not to live in a $7,000 a month building. And I don't know why they would want to have a kid in this neighborhood there are no parks, it's not very family or child oriented compared to other neighborhoods.
Oh dear, how can you survive in a $1,100,000 home at 32 years old?! And how did you survive in Minnesota on such a low budget?! With all that cold weather? My goodness... My heart bleeds...but what about those of us who aren't rich??
Why would you even consider that especially with a small family with a good income like that? Thinking what the future would be like. Jesus Christ that’s depressing just thinking about it. Taxes alone are fucking insane on any west coast city let alone there....
Move out of San Francisco, buy any where but there. That way the couple can build wealth instead of giving everything to the banks. They will end up broke when they are old.
First Last Indeed. You can't build wealth there. My sister tried and wasted 10 years of her life in San Diego. I'm sure it was a nice experience and all being on her own for the first time. But no savings, investments, equity, etc. and she's in her 40s now. With she had listened to me.
How are they giving everything to the banks? What the hell are you talking about? It's the banks giving us everything; they get free banking, just like the rest of us! Mortgage money that they can't save for, or even get from their own family and friend- and only have to pay back in installments over a period of 25 years! Try doing that with your family and friends!
They want to buy a home to save money yet live in an apartment that is 7000k a month… Yea they clearly they lack basic finance skills and should probably go back to Minnesota 😂
these people just don't want to admit that they're actually middle income here, maybe even slightly below. There are lots of homes in SF proper that are actually under a million, but they're in less desirable neighborhoods. These people come from middle of nowhere america and get 6 figure salaries, then think that they're rich and splurge on a 7k apartment. They're just not willing to live in places where the rest of us are cause they think they're above it.
Adam Dang We are too... I'm in NorCal and we're long overdue for a big shaker. But where we are: we're in a slip strike zone, where the tectonic plates rub against each other; they rarely cause quakes higher than 7.0. Beverly Huttinger to not take a job where you will eventually do very well for yourself? I'm not a fan of techies myself, but they aren't stupid. And you certainly shouldn't judge them by the color of their skin.
When I was in college, 30 years ago, the Latinas dated the comptuer geeks for a number of reasons. One reason being that Latin girls outnumbered guys by quiet a lot, and geeks have always had harder time finding girlfriends, so all the computer nerds were dating Latina girls. Its a matter of you take what you can get.
Born and raised in SF. This city has lost its way. Techies are to blame. Homeowners are to blame. Lawmakers and their laws are to blame. Foreign buyers are to blame. Everybody's rooting for another major earthquake in SF, myself included. Just don't hit when my family or I are in the city.
For the past eight years rent in Sacramento has been going up. I already know 4 people that work in the bay area by commuting there daily. It's just a matter of time before rents in sacramento go above $1500 for a one bedroom.
Good. Maybe while everyone flees to Portland and Seattle the normal middle class families that these news stories never cover can catch a break again. No more "super commuters" because they're not being constantly pushed further out. Sounds good to me.

How are they broke on 250k? I honestly don't understand how anyone is broke making six figures in SF. Either they have no idea how to budget and go out every single day for lunch/dinner/coffee/drinks or they have a coke problem lol.
It's expensive because its a world class city(food/entertainment) with VERY nice weather year round. You can't compare SF with Minnesota LMFAO, Like comparing a mercedes with a Kia lol
"We need to buy a home to save money". What kind of stupid statement is that? I hope this couple already made some calculations of how much it actually cost to buy a house. Don't be house poor just because you want to "save money". Have emergency funds ready in case something happens, especially with a new born baby. If something in the house breaks, YOU are responsible. Not to mention taxes and other unforeseen maintenance. Good luck!
Most homeowners don't have earthquake insurance and if there is a severe quake, contractors will be charging what the market will bear. That means that many owners will go bankrupt or they'll have to sell at a huge loss.
Charlesbjtown - I own my house outright thank you. Renting and buying a house has its advantages and disadvantages. Just stating the fact that a house is one of the most or the most expensive "investment" you will ever make. Make your decision carefully before you sign on the dotted line.
Richland Zee that's the truth if u don't buy a house to save money your rent goes up just like what happened to the last tenant of the apartment and they will end up moving back to Minnesota
a mortgage is a huge loss though if the market crashes. which appears to be the case in san francisco. prices are higher than ever. people are buying properties for the sole purpose and hype of rising prices, this will all come crashing down. yes prices will still be high. but nothing like they are now.
I’m a California Native and still live with family. After I finish from College if my family kicks me out I’m legit moving out of this state. It’s cool here but it really isn’t all that. I’m srsly moving to Florida where it is 10x cheaper.
"we need to buy a house to save home", 0:42 - 0.43. Did I just hear that right? Once you buy a house, you still have to make payments such as bills, insurance, property tax, and surprise costs to damages to the house that can come out of nowhere. They are better off just renting if they are just trying to "save money".
true but even if you account for all that you still pay much less money per month than if you rented the same place, plus you can sell it in a few year's and make money. The one real risk is that the market crashes again, which is hard to predict.
When you consider the percentage of our own labor that goes into paying for our living space, it's a horrible deal. People are contributing half their working life just to have a place to live. In a way we were better off building cabins in the woods. Six months work and you are done. No rent, no payments, great view. Now we live in a state of semi slavery for the sake of our homes. When people pay over a million for a dirt ordinary house, that doesn't even include interest over the life of the loan, something has gone badly wrong.
Then don't live in San Francisco for God's sake. Thinking that people should be able to get anything even though they cannot afford it is absurd. I cannot afford to live in a new york apartment with central park views or buy a San Francisco mansion, the answer is simple, I live where I can afford to live. The idea that there is any city that is or will be "the city for everyone" is ludicrous.
you should find a place for less than $1 million. go look at the sunset area. as ridiculously high as san francisco is, and it is, you can buy a place for that amount of money. i'd say they have expensive tastes. $7000/month on rent? there are tons of places you can live in sf for less.
Right?? It's like they chose the most out of touch people to inflate the story. Housing in SF is over a million but like... just literally shift your focus in either direction in the bay and I'm sure they'd be able to get a house just fine. Last I checked there were downtown apartments for half that, they must be living in the most expensive apartment in the city.
Are you talking about the sunset district? Like in the avenues where Abraham Lincoln high school is? Those homes used to be affordable not now I mean I guess if you got 1 mill you might be good
The issue here is those 17 offers and offering 700K above asking, he also said 25% are cash offers...we are allowing people from other countries to buy property and it's affecting our citizens. They are buying property in New York and San Francisco at alarming rates, why don't we look into why they're doing that. Some of the homes in New York aren't even being lived in.
Eric Cerqueira exactly. Buy something for $500k in Sacramento that’s comparable to something for $1 mil in SF. Buy a Tesla and autopilot to work and back everyday 🤷🏽♂️
So each of them will have a salary of around 150-170 a year. They are living way above their means. This is such an unlikeable couple…don’t know why. I make $ 550k a year and would never spend 7k on a luxury high rise apartment.
Wow $7000 rent !!! I know they both make good money but you really need to spend carefully...my husband and I make well over 230k a year combined and we do have nice things but our mortgage is only $2k a month, which leaves us with lots of savings and to be honest...a peace of mind. I don’t care how much I make if I spend all of it then I’m just as poor as someone struggling to make ends meet! Earlier today I was at the Dollar store buying new toy cars for my son. No shame!
Cali Caliva same, we splurge but only when we have a lot of savings. Since my last comment we got a side hustle, this year we’re on track to making close to 300k. (Still love the dollar store though), and bought a new house.
I don’t how some people are so stupid why would you wanna live in SF even if your rich in Arizona or Texas you can have a mansion literally for half that price even in some parts of California to lesser extent if your smart but I guess lmao

Ugh! Don't regret ever leaving this city. Can't help but roll my eyes. How is $7000 a month for rent worth of you can't save any money?
they wanna live in luxuriously...you can go to east bay and rent a 2 bedroom for 3,000 even 4,000 and you can also buy a house in Oakland for under a 1mil. i dont feel sorry for them...they just wanna live the glamours life.
i know right!! i was thinking the same thing.
Chishimba Simutowe
$7,000 a month in rent= a vibrant walkable city and friends!!! That what money buys! 😂🤣😂🤣
Marcus M. Yeah, but they are in SF.
“It’s really cold in Minnesota”
There are 48 other states to choose from other than Minnesota and San Francisco lol. Then move to a new state where you can get a bigger better house for your budget.
Having Tea With the Devil Georgia is really nice if you move outside metro of the city of Atlanta.
Xiaofen Liu where do you live liu?
Why are they looking at a loft if they're looking for a 3 bedroom?
I'll take my chances living on a sailboat.
That's about the only way to do it there, or live in an RV, but you are probably better off on a boat in Cali that is mooring off a structure unconnected to the mainland.
You might actually survive whenever California breaks off then
😂😂😂
with sea level on the rise, go explore Atlantis

Snakebloke
They seem to be rich at least temporarily until it runs out.
Definitely not a wealthy couple.
Snakebloke And even if its fully paid, they would still have to pay the government about $917 per month in property taxes. Yikes!
Why would you even consider that especially with a small family with a good income like that? Thinking what the future would be like. Jesus Christ that’s depressing just thinking about it. Taxes alone are fucking insane on any west coast city let alone there....
o I know Minnesota far better and classier
Move out of San Francisco, buy any where but there. That way the couple can build wealth instead of giving everything to the banks. They will end up broke when they are old.
First Last
Indeed.
I hate the Bay Area, wasted 10 months of my life there. Now I’m back in sacramento, a million times better
Use BART. Move to Lafayette, Orinda, or Walnut Creek for 1/3 that 7k rent. Insane is right. Look elsewhere!
Them: We want to live in California, but we want to pay Minnesota prices.
that common sense fly over they head
They want to buy a home to save money yet live in an apartment that is 7000k a month… Yea they clearly they lack basic finance skills and should probably go back to Minnesota 😂
"Vintage" meaning old, shabby and overpriced
This real estate bubble in SF will explode like it's 2008 again
Its a privilege to live in SF
The worst situation is that always will be people like them that pay $7000 a month and think that’s ok...
I hope they don’t buy a house it is because of people like these that native Californians are unable to buy in the places they were born and raised.

So why moved to San Francisco being one of the most expensive cities in California. Stupid move.

these people just don't want to admit that they're actually middle income here, maybe even slightly below.
Seattle is on a threat of an overdue 9.0 earthquake and lack of earthquake protection. I ain't moving.
Adam Dang We are too... I'm in NorCal and we're long overdue for a big shaker. But where we are: we're in a slip strike zone, where the tectonic plates rub against each other; they rarely cause quakes higher than 7.0. But the Pacific Northwest: they're in a subduction zone where the deepest parts of the earth just push straight up and when they do, MADONE, we're talking 8.0, 9.0...massive.
Entire west coast from Vancouver to San Diego is full of fault lines. Any day now
They want to stay because the have friends and it’s vibrant. 😂
Tucson Az, My home was $15 thousand. 30 years ago,. Today 2018 getting offers in the mail for $150,000? It is not just California.
$150K is pathetic. Thats not even keeping up with inflation.
Fr Louie Goad denver is even worse my grandparents paid $17,000 for their house .....and now its priced at $500,000.00
Lmao, my dad bought a house for 38k 5 years ago and now it’s worth 120k.
This is why the market will crash soon
My parents bought their house for 50k in Idaho 20-30 miles outside Boise. now it’s worth $150,000k. My grandmother bought her house for $20k now it’s 200k
Then stop trying to live in areas that are too expensive.
2mil for a fixer upper?? Crazy
No thanks, I’m alright living simple, free and enjoying my family making 25k a year.
I don’t own anything in the USA and would not want to.
It's scary, everything going up so fast, except our pay checks. I hope this isn't the sign that the whole country is going to be like California in the next 30 years😳.
Bloody hell, commute. Guess what, you can't afford to live in the city, commute!
S. Bay Area is expanding their train service! 🙌
And that's why I left... bye bye Sacramento!
Beverly Huttinger This is the second time you made this comment with the fake "LOL". You feeling some type of way because he is with a Spanish girl?? Sounds like jealousy to me.
Beverly Huttinger ... Actually racist. Don't assume someone's a gold digger off of the color of her skin. Also, she makes a shitton of money off of her job, it's not like she needs him.
Beverly Huttinger since there's probably not many other places to Carter to that skillset, and she'll eventually be payed more than enough to pay it off,I don't see how that makes her stupid. Also, cut it out with the (LOL)!
Beverly Huttinger to not take a job where you will eventually do very well for yourself? You seem more jealous than anything lay off people on the internet, and maybe work hard enough so that you can buy a house in the greatest city in the world.
My heart bleeds! Those poor people and their million dollars!!!
Pretty Shameful. You making crazy money but can't save. Guess what? You're poor..
Is this from The Onion?!
For the past eight years rent in Sacramento has been going up. I already know 4 people that work in the bay area by commuting there daily. It's just a matter of time before rents in sacramento go above $1500 for a one bedroom.
And here I am, a disabled veteran unable to afford even a $100K home!
If they can't afford living, maybe they should try alternatives to "luxury apartments".
Silicon Valley talks billions--not millions.
This just motivates me to build a tiny home.
Why move there? Everyone is Leaving because the liberals ruined it.
Good. Maybe while everyone flees to Portland and Seattle the normal middle class families that these news stories never cover can catch a break again. No more "super commuters" because they're not being constantly pushed further out. Sounds good to me.
No one could pay me enough to live in California.. I live in Georgia . I have a 4 bedroom house, with a den eat in kitchen, formal living room and dining room and 2 baths . It sits on a pond with a huge yard.. my mortage (without taxes and insurance) is less then 700 month. With taxes and insurance we pay 1000 a month!!! Keep Cali. NO THANKS

Commute an hour to work; SF is congested, crime riddled etc. Buy a nice home in a nice area to raise your child.
1.1 million you can find a place near san jose or sants cruz or even oakland
It's REALLY hard for me to sympathize with these people. They should get out of Dodge while the gettin' is good.
They have a budget of over a million dollars but still cannot buy a home? Ok something is truly wrong. What about others who have way less? No wonder many are homeless and living on the streets.
This couple is crazy because they could easily afford a home 20-40 minutes outside the city for 300-600k less than that.
Of course these people are programmers and want to live the high life in SF. I am a programmer myself and its people like this who listen to anything to live in silicon valley.
Not worth staying broke i know programmers who make 250k in SF anf they are broke that poverty.
Its insane.
making 250k and being broke ?!?! wow thats crazy
How are they broke on 250k? I honestly don't understand how anyone is broke making six figures in SF. Either they have no idea how to budget and go out every single day for lunch/dinner/coffee/drinks or they have a coke problem lol.
sybrix simple. 250k - 30% tax = 170k living in a 7k/month condo = 86k let’s not even start with car payments food etc...
Did CBS really use the words "1 million dollar budget" and "struggle" in the same sentence???
It's expensive because its a world class city(food/entertainment) with VERY nice weather year round. You can't compare SF with Minnesota LMFAO, Like comparing a mercedes with a Kia lol
Lol.. A budget of $1.1M but are looking at high end apartments that are waaay over their budget
Words of an apartment dweller, that longs for a home.... but can't afford one. Bitter.
Florida is shit. Especially with red algae. Texas is better.
Camerons Car Reviews can I suggest another state to move too?
When people pay over a million for a dirt ordinary house, that doesn't even include interest over the life of the loan, something has gone badly wrong.
trying too save money but live in high end apartment they could by a condo or two bed room home
Those homes used to be affordable not now
I mean I guess if you got 1 mill you might be good

Tatiana Rojas A lot of the houses being bought in San Francisco are sitting empty. All-cash, foreign buyers just parking their money.

San Francisco is even a really nice place to live lol. Houses with no yard, high crime, and DIRTY FILTHY OCEAN. lol.
Wow $7000 rent !!! I know they both make good money but you really need to spend carefully...my husband and I make well over 230k a year combined and we do have nice things but our mortgage is only $2k a month, which leaves us with lots of savings and to be honest...a peace of mind.
