It's 2024 and I here I am again watching this video. My wife and I are having a discussion about shoegaze while we are drinking at a bar. Glad to see you are still putting out videos.
It is refreshing to know someone else who listens to Blind Mr. Jones. To know another Black Man who enjoys shoegaze music. You are discussing bands only I seem to enjoy. My friends are clueless about this great genre. We would have fun swapping stories and thoughts.
And again we must take into account that taste good or bad is not universal. I can imagine they weren't able to create the hypnotic effect of the music live. I still love their first album.
i just stumbled upon this and i really enjoyed watching this. this guy is just showcasing stuff and talking about it and saying what he wants to, awesome.
Ugh! Yes......blind mr jones where so underrated ......this record is so gorgeous , I love your breakdown of the genre and how it's on a continuum and super emotional
I found a Moose CD single a couple of years ago and it sounded great. I was wondering how they didn't get any airplay on radio stations at the time, 1990's. Another shoegazey find at a thrift store was a band out of Detroit called Majesty Crush. They have a shoegazey sound but an unusual set of lyrics for that kind of music.
I love shoegaze but didn't really appreciate it until recently. Verve's a storm in heaven was the first one I heard but recently I found a band called ninth paradise on youtube and the sounds incredible. It's an amazingly catchy genre
The magic of music and youtube. I went from blasting huge stoner rock sounds from Fu Manchu to watching this review to listening to the Blind Mr Jones album posted here. I say thank you, I was in dire need of new sounds.
For Against are phenomenal. In The Marshes, Echelons and December, one of the best runs of albums I've heard. Their later work is good too. Digital Sex, I hope to procure a reissue at some point.
Dude, u are as dope as it gets! I'm looking at all these vinyl collection of yours like a straight man looking at her beloved one. I'm jealous, lol! I fucking love Shoegaze. *Blind Mr. Jones* is sure one of the most underrated Shoegaze band, ever!
i too am a black male... i'm also a Hip-Hop artist... the song that inspired me to do any type of music was "When You Sleep" by My Bloody Valentine... another black guy introduced it to me in 1998... BLEW MY MIND. I'd never heard of the genre of shoegaze and it was like a baptisms. Look, thats the great thing about music, it opens your mind and emotions to new levels and people that dont listen to different types of music are only denying themselves no matter the color. one.
have you heard of the french band Alcest? They play a unique blend of shoegaze and post metal and incorporate many other influences as well. its Some of the best and original "shoegaze" material I've ever heard. check out their first album Souvenirs D'un Autre Monde. A good Song to start with is "Solar Song" even though its not from that specific album....
cool man just thought id mention them in case u hadn't. i listened to some blind mr. jones and im loving it! keep the vids coming ur doing a great job!!!!
I hear ya, dereckvon. I felt that blind mr jones as soon as it started building up, pretty powerful stuff. And my,my, what a serious collection of akin music you're acquiring! Proud of ya and especially for the respect and acknowledgement of the British bands, you're a Legend!
Shoegaze is a style I'm just getting into, but I'm loving everything I hear so far, it's definitely becoming one of my favourite genres. I love your passion!
Just what I needed today. Thanks. I'm glad you show cds. The vinyl is certainly funner to look at but I would not have learned about Blind Mr Jones without that cd. You even played a file from your computer the other day and mentioned the band and I was writing it down. My list is ridiculous.
Wow!!!! Blind Mr. Jones is so great! Loving that! I know what you mean about the term "shoegaze." SO much can go under that. I LOVE LOVE LOVE the band Black Tambourine, which I consider shoegaze, but others consider "tween pop" - does it matter? They are just incredible, and that's what matters....
The best part about the label “shoegaze” is that it initially was used as an insult from mass music media critics. It’s a nice middle finger to the ones who keep genuinely amazing music unknown.
If anyone looking for shoegaze check out Coaltar Of The Deepers, songs of theirs that stand out to me are "Sarah III" and "Prophet Proved" are some highlights in my eyes, they're Japanese but will sometimes speak broken English so most of the lines you won't understand but they're my favorite band check them out.
4:18 One of my favorite Catherine Wheel tunes is the Crank b-side, "Tongue Twisted". It's on the Like Cats & Dogs b-side compilation but they tweaked it a bit and I much prefer the original. Catherine Wheel - Tongue Twisted ('Crank' b-side) [1993]
Thanks!! from a shoegaze afficianado who is your same age. You touched on many favs of mine and turned me on too a healthy dose of bands i havnt heard as well. Derek, please search Alison's Halo label is burnt hair.Again thanks i feel like i know you like an old friend
Very informative. I love it when you break down a certain genre of music if I may and go to it. I agree Blind Mr's bass guitarist and keyboards are very reminiscent of eighties Cure. Rob/Boston
Black Metallic is a magical song. I think it is the song that actually got me into shoegaze back in the 90s. I love that you mentioned The Cure!!! Nobody ever thinks of The Cure when it comes to shoegaze sounding songs. Fascination Street comes to mind whenever I think of shoegaze. Or One Hundred Years from Pornography.
Hi Dereck, I've just stumbled upon this rather old shoegaze video of yours. As a matter of fact I recently got me "Duck" by "Porto Geese" on vinyl, which definitly hits the shoegaze sound. Now I'm wondering, if you've already heard of Porto Geese and what you think of their music. "Duck" is definitely a recommendation. 👍
Blind Mr Jones are a great great band, Stereo Musicale and Tatooine are two of the greatest albums from the Shoegaze era! Nice to see that someone else appreciates the great See See Rider also, another overlooked Scottish band!
I'm a child of the late 80's early 90's so this has brought on some memories for me.I picked up a cassette in a charity shop some years ago,it's called Precious and I think it was a charity release for an animal charity.Anyway it featured the likes of Pale Saints,House of Love,Suede,The Wonder Stuff,Lush etc. Some of the UK and Ireland viewers might be familiar with this release I think it dates from ,92.
I don't know a whole lot about shoegaze although i saw many of the bands live at the time - in 89 i was 17, so just b4 the dance scene came along for me (late 90) i was going to see ride, bark psychosis, woodentops, house of love, etc.. there is an american independeant film called mysterious skin that has a lot of shoegaze tracks on it do you know Beyond the Wildwood dereck? its a bit b4 shoegaze per se c. 87/88 - its a lot of "C86" bands doing syd barrett tracks - thats worth a listen.
It's 2024 and I here I am again watching this video. My wife and I are having a discussion about shoegaze while we are drinking at a bar. Glad to see you are still putting out videos.
This guy is very genuine and knowledgeable. Respect!
this video is comfy
It is refreshing to know someone else who listens to Blind Mr. Jones. To know another Black Man who enjoys shoegaze music. You are discussing bands only I seem to enjoy. My friends are clueless about this great genre. We would have fun swapping stories and thoughts.
Are you into Arizona's Half String?
I really like this guy, great taste in music and his voice is great to listen to. He's like the Morgan Freeman of good music.
I agree with that statement.
I wish you were my dad
cborgioni Mine too
He said "I find this music to be completely full of soul" ....damn straight. Me too!!!
I discovered a few new bands from your post. Thank you sir!!!!
If you were my neighbor I’d be politely intruding every day to listen to that vinyl.
You, Sir.. have the best taste in music in the world.
i agree about the soul part, shoegaze is like the blues, full of soul
But is it as full of soul as... SOUL?
I sensed a kindred spirit immediately.
2:18 you've summed up my feelings exactly. Thank you for introducing me to Blind Mr. Jones - almost 8 years ago now!
You're a delight, you're profoundly well informed, and you have fantastic taste! Thanks for spreading the gospel!
Lilys were one of my favorite shoegaze bands from the early 90's...along with Chapterhouse.
Love shoegaze, never heard of
Blind Mr Jones , but thank you for sharing this because they sound lovely ✌️
Jesus! You just mentioned SeeFeel! You have AMAZING taste, sir.
And again we must take into account that taste good or bad is not universal. I can imagine they weren't able to create the hypnotic effect of the music live. I still love their first album.
Love you dude! You are a friggin' shoegazer ... From start to finish...Airiel , damn...
+Cyrus Budd love airiel! !!
YES AIRIEL!
i just stumbled upon this and i really enjoyed watching this. this guy is just showcasing stuff and talking about it and saying what he wants to, awesome.

Just bought the complete blind mr Jones cd set thanks to this video. I love Catherine Wheel and Slowdive and so these sound super good!
Ugh! Yes......blind mr jones where so underrated ......this record is so gorgeous , I love your breakdown of the genre and how it's on a continuum and super emotional
I could listen to you talk about music for hours, man.
For Against are one of the greatest unsung bands (esp out of the US). Looks like reissues are imminent on the Captured Tracks label
Wow!! Thank you! Blind Mr Jones is amazing!
I love shoegaze but didn't really appreciate it until recently. Verve's a storm in heaven was the first one I heard but recently I found a band called ninth paradise on youtube and the sounds incredible. It's an amazingly catchy genre

Anybody with a vinyl collection like yours ill listen to when it comes to finding new beautiful sounds. Your my hero bro.
Great video and great collection!
I like it but well but haven't gotten deep into it for quite awhile. As such, it is the sort of thing that inspires me to play more than listen.
For Against are phenomenal. In The Marshes, Echelons and December, one of the best runs of albums I've heard. Their later work is good too.
Digital Sex, I hope to procure a reissue at some point.
Blind Mr Jones sounds great!! I will check them out for sure, Thanks.
I think out of all the bands I've learned through you, Blind Mr. Jones is my favorite. And I agree; it does feel completely full of soul
I just don't have any Boos on vinyl. They were great.

Dude, u are as dope as it gets! I'm looking at all these vinyl collection of yours like a straight man looking at her beloved one. I'm jealous, lol!

Thankyou Sir for introducing me to Blind Mr. Jones. The first song you played floored me. I HAD to find out what that was!
i too am a black male... i'm also a Hip-Hop artist... the song that inspired me to do any type of music was "When You Sleep" by My Bloody Valentine... another black guy introduced it to me in 1998... BLEW MY MIND. I'd never heard of the genre of shoegaze and it was like a baptisms. Look, thats the great thing about music, it opens your mind and emotions to new levels and people that dont listen to different types of music are only denying themselves no matter the color. one.
Your knowledge of bands of any given genre is impressive.
have you heard of the french band Alcest? Autumn's Grey Solace! I love that you mentioned them. Absolutely wonderful band.

I knew you were going to chime in first on this one Stevie. You are the shoegaze king of the VC~
Rob/Boston
I have been a big fan of shoegaze since I discovered Swervedriver back in the 90's. Thank you for sharing your thoughts and Blind Mr. Jones...
totally agree, shoegaze sounds like distorted Beatles on 16rpm
Thanks!! from a shoegaze afficianado who is your same age. You touched on many favs of mine and turned me on too a healthy dose of bands i havnt heard as well. Derek, please search Alison's Halo label is burnt hair.Again thanks i feel like i know you like an old friend

Now I'm wondering, if you've already heard of Porto Geese and what you think of their music. "Duck" is definitely a recommendation. 👍
Yes but they aren't shoegaze to my ears. More like the band Om.
Somebody else already mentioned but there is a copy of that Blind Mr Jones LP on Discogs
So glad I discovered this channel. Really good stuff.
wonderful knowledge of the music scene, and an amazing collection of albums
Blind Mr Jones are great! Im also very glad to have found your channel.

A recommendation for modern shoegaze should definitely go to Whirr. I'm expecting big things out of them...
Giant Steps excellent changed it all for me, along with the Orbs UForb around the same time.. Lazarus by the boo's remixed worth picking up
seefeel were always there too respect
It's so cool to see an older gentleman into this.
A great Shoegaze track indeed. Thanks for playing it!

I don't know a whole lot about shoegaze although i saw many of the bands live at the time - in 89 i was 17, so just b4 the dance scene came along for me (late 90) i was going to see ride, bark psychosis, woodentops, house of love, etc..
