Black Swan is basically about how they're afraid of losing their passion for their art. They've been performing and creating music for so long, it's been over 10 years for some of them and 8 years doing this together. It's every artist's greatest fear to burn out of what keeps them going.

Black Swan is about the fear of losing passion for something you once loved (the first death...in this song, BTS refers to their music/art), but finding your way out of that dark place/thoughts to find your passion for it again. BTS member RM wrote this song. You should check out the live performance on Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon a few weeks ago-the set is amazing, it is ART. “Black Swan” has some references to the film with Nathalie Portman but main connection has to do with the balance with the light and shadow side of our personalities (in the film the ‘shadow’ side overcame her and led to her demise). This album (Map Of The Soul:7) was inspired by psychiatrist Carl Jung’s theory of individuation that explores the Persona-Shadow-Ego side of our personalities. Their songs, stages and videos have allot of metaphors and symbolism +their performances are at Michael Jackson level creativity amazing! Check out “Dionysus” live performance at Melon Music Awards 2019, mythology references will blow you away!

@@Exit32_Productions its like you started watching a tv show in the middle of the season, Black Swan is part ot the Map of the Soul series which like the OP said is inspired by Carl Jung and Jungian Psychology. Its kinda hard for new reactors to understand Bangtans music and lyrics because its basically a series. Also, lyrics are very important part of Bts and Army. But great reaction!! 💜💜💜 also can you react to This is Bts by xceleste, from nobodies to legends 2019, Bts Contribution to music, also Who is Bts: Seven members of Bangtan ( its a bit outdated but you still get the understanding of how they came to be), it introduces each member, their roles and how they came to BigHit their company Also, youll have a better understanding about the guys and why Armys are so supportive and passionate.

Whenever (if) concerts come back, BTS concerts will sell out so fast. Over Covid lockdowns the amount of new fans seemed to have tripled bc they have time to sort of delve deeper into their work. So be alert for buying a ticket as soon as they start selling. It’ll be hunger games.

The editing technique that you like is called a 'match cut'... learned the term from a great reactor by the name of Jordan Orme, he's a pretty successful video editor and highly informative. LOL It's pretty standard in kpop for a video to have 2-4 scene/costume setups, they dance the choreo in all of them and then it's all edit together with the match cuts. Definitely keeps it interesting!
The theater this is filmed in is the Los Angeles Broadway Theater.
The song is about the pressures of their success, how trapped they feel by it, how they feel like they're losing their love of music because of that pressure... fearing it and realizing just how awful it would be, they feel it would be their first death if they didn't have music.
The shadows in the video are representative in part of the albums concept of Jungian psychology and their journey of self reflection/self discovery... acknowledging their flaws, struggles, embracing their whole selves and being a better person for it.
Another highly introspective and devasting piece is Suga's solo, "Shadow". He talks about how he wanted all these things - money success and fame - but now that they achieved it and far more than they ever expected/wanted, he now lives in fear of the inevitable decline, of letting people down. He also describes that even though he accomplished his goals, he's still not entirely happy, that there's still a shadow (depression/anxiety) that keeps him from from feeling enjoyment... but by the end he acknowledges his shadow and accepts that it's something that will always be a part of him.

@@Exit32_Productions No problem.... yeah, BTS is definitely one of those acts that doesn't just make music - they make art. Everything they do is almost always multi-layered.
Surface level... great music, beautiful lyrics.
Deeper... the message of a particular song and the symbolism throughout it's mv. (Spring Day mv and the rap song UGH! are good examples of this... there are so many hidden meanings/symbolism, cultural references and double meanings to them, you literally need explanation videos to fully understand and appreciate the journey they just took you on.)
Still deeper... the overall album concept/story/journey.
Even deeper... the message/story arc spanning *multiple* albums.
And then deepest of all... there's a fictional storyline called the BTU (BangTan Universe) weaved into many music videos, highlight reels, trailers, and a webtoon series that seems to be a time travel/butterfly effect/alternate timeline concept that is both super interesting and highly frustrating at the same time... as it is not a linear narrative, it's told in an abstract/symbolic way, has no conclusion (as yet) and usually gives very little answers and just adds more questions. Think LOST, in its prime... Basically to quote the 10th Doctor (of Doctor Who), "it's a wibbly wobbly, timey wimey ball of... stuff." LOL The start of the journey is the I Need U mv, but then there are like 30+ videos involved after that. So protip, if you come across stuff in their mv's and it feels like you've missed something, it's probably BTU related.
Anyhoo, sorry to ramble at ya. I hope I havent scared you guys off... it's really ok to just stick to surface level or a little beyond that. Not many dive into the whole thing.
If you do want to get to know them better as a group and why this group in particular is SO beloved, I highly recommend watching;

They did this on jimmy fallon and you can see their full choreo it’s insane. Another good song that balances their hip hop with their contemporary pop style really well is “home”, the Fallon video is incredible. Highly recommend.

I would rate this MV 10/10. You must be surprised. But even in BTS catalog it is very clever MV. Really clever. Not just face level MV. Actually masterfully done MV. You just have to know at what you looking at. And those who fallowing BTS album concept like me can apritiate how subtile and briliantly director explored and expresed concept BTS used for this album and song.
And before you started shaking your head. Yes, I agree there is more high production, more flashy MV out there, but this MV is absolutely perfect for this particular song. You just can't make more perfect fit than this.
First: it is very tasteful MV it is important, because song itself from production to lyrics is very tasteful too. It dives into very complex Jungian psychology and make references thought colors, shapes, lightning to explain story behind lyrics.
Second: It expertly express song meaning thought modern dance. Using dance and calling song Black swan they creating subtile parallel with movie Black Swan that also analized artistic pain of self expression, creative drive and burning yourself out from dancer perspective and used same Jungian psychology theory BTS do. Also to Ballet Swan Lake. It is important to know because in ballet when swan turns evil, it becomes swan with Black feathers instead of white. In MV black dresed Jimin have Black wings sprout of his back. Letting you know exact moment in a video where his personality is overtaken by his shadow part of psyche.
Third: MV makes a lot of impact when you familiar with Jungian psychology theory. Everything suddently become very obvious. You can clearly see how MV express song placement into shadow part of BTS personality. They literaly show upheaval in the inner personality world. While BTS express it through their lyrics and dancing, Director does it playing with lightning, settings and color. Shadows in this MV are not just regular shadows they representation of shadow part of human psyche, which right at that point is out of control inside of BTS who is having hard time to keep it in check, locked where no one could see it. Director express it by showing shadows of BTS not falloving what BTS members do in MV. Also BTS in white clothes represent BTS being in their Persona character, mask they put as artist which is compromise between their true self and society expectation. BTS in black clothing is BTS who submerged into their inner world, facing their shadow part of psyche they keep suppressed.
Song itself is their journey of acknowledging there is a problem, going through hard time trying to find solution, and by the end coming to realization and finding the way to deal with it. Same with shadows in MV. Shadows at fist starts to rise and show themselves making BTS acknowledge their existence, not leaving them alone and not fallowing BTS effort to suppress them, BTS being forced su face shadows by Shadows submerging them and by doing it they are able to make peace with them and become in control of their psyche again. MV is ending with JK looking at his shadow but being in control of it this time and being able to suppress it on command.
I can talk and talk about intricacies in this MV, but my english is shit and makes my head hurts trying to find right words. But anyways i LOVE this MV. For real. It is in same realm as Spring Day and Fake Love.

@@Exit32_Productionsi think Blood Sweat &Tears are also in same tier. It uses art pieces and meanings behind them to bleed into MV and use book "Demian" as basic guildline for events that take place in MV. You can write graduate paper on that MV.
Fake love fallowing BU storyline and gives you hints to development of storiline itself but also uses visuals to express feeling and scale of it.
Spring day MV director should have von all awards possible that year cause it is brilliant MV. Where all meanings are there like bread crumbs Scattered throughout MV. Same as with this video it lets references he use in MV to other work give MV bigger and more developed story ark. And he did it in such subtile touches you can miss it all together and MV is still gonna look like it has a story. It is MV with many different layers. BTS usually work with directors who not afraid to go deep and not make it too obvious. You have to been read certain books, watched movies, know art etc to be able to spot those references. For one person to do that it is almost impossible. But BTS fans are taking notice and sharing it with others so eventually we able to dig down to the bones of it all. And i kid you not it is glorious.
Fun fact: This is shot in a theater in LA.

All of them are pretty emotional and I could honestly grasp the meaning and sentiment behind the songs even without the lyrics (but I definitely recommend looking at them.) it's just so amazing how music can make you feel.
If you want to look at female artists I definitely recommend groups like Mamamoo, (G)idle and Dreamcatcher for their amazing vocals. Dreamcatcher also has very artistic mvs that I personally find very impressive.

This M/V was shot in Los Angeles at the Orpheum Theater. I recognized that location cause my dad’s company helped a band do their lighting for a club weekend event thing like 2 years ago.

So this is only my 3rd of your videos to watch, I'm still learning your grading system, since you are so positive in your comments throughout and then you're like 7.5, lol..... sorry, I guess for me if it moves me that much it is a 9 or a 10.... but I hear ya..... they have a lot of depth to their lyrics and symbology in the cinematography, so if not understanding the meaning cuts 2-3 points off your scores you probably never going to score them above an 8. hahaha.... anyway, thanks for checking out more of their content. It's more of just a fun little game in the moment nothing to take too seriously and own personal opinions and I've said in other videos I wish I had graded some videos in the past higher and other lower after looking back and listening/watching the music videos and songs agin but thank you so much I will be doing more very soon!!
