  • Another brand has set foot in India. BYD enters the country with an EV. The BYD e6 is India’s first eMPV, and one that gets a claimed range over 500km. Jay Patil plays fleet operator (and passenger) for the day to tell you what it's like.

The Chinese entering Indian EV space is a dangerous problem for tata and Mahindra
They have vehicles that can undercut the Nexon and e20 with double the range and features

BYD should have targetted personal & family buyers instead of commercial fleet owners initially because it looks like a product which holds good potential & with a few tweaks, can do better in the Indian market.

As a fleet car, third row is as important as the boot space and make more economical sense and there's always an option to put the third row down for that extra luggage space.

While the front grille looks pretty nice, the rest of the car looks like a mix between the Renault Triber, the old Renault Lodgy, and the Mahindra Marazzo. If there is anything that would discourage me from buying this car however, it wouldn’t be the fact that it is from China, but rather that this BYD brand is relatively unknown at the moment, and needs to prove their value. If this car gets a good NCAP rating then that would be great…

This is a great car…I love the tablet rotation feature
Also, I feel companies should stop using the piano black plastic, it looks extremely ugly when it scratches in a few days.

That’s around Rs 1.5 per Km as per Electricity Charges in Mumbai. Awesome 🔥
The only thing is that 30 lakh price, if had priced around 20 it would have been a marvellous deal.
But still the price is pretty decent because a Normal Ertiga Cab drives around 90000 Km a year on an average. Which sums too 5600 Litres of fuel which is goes to 6 Lakh vs 1 Lakh in EV charging cost in Mumbai.

& changing the way of transportation in electric segments.

Since there is a good importance in back seat comfort they should add Central armrest, reclainable and movable seats, sun blinds, laptop table(like in Innova crysta)and dual zone climate control in the rear. Then it's okay. But it's unbelievable that a 30lakh car is missing on a rear central armrest. Even I think a small hatchback like kwid also offers that. So..

Agree with Divyang on pricing. The car should also be hopefully available for self drive rentals and soon for private owners. With the sort of range, the car maker can attempt to make a TATA Ace or Leyland Dost competitor goods carrier. It certainly will help drive EV adoption.

500,000 kilometres waranty on the battery means that the car will be scrapped before the battery warranty expires. Will the BYD last as long as the Toyota Innova? If yes, than replacing the battery at 400,000 kilometres under warranty appears to be excellent value.

Traveling the 500km distance on a petrol car with a mileage of around 15 kmpl would cost me more than 3000 rs….whereas in this EV the electricity charge for the same range will be only around rs 500….one would be saving around 5 to 6x in this case !!

Alas, we have let the dragon in!
BYD knows for sure that at some point in the near future, government and law enforcement will have to make that painful and expensive change from diesel to electric. Just like the Innova and Ertiga got their respective initial boost from the Indian government, after the void left by Ambassador's exit. Most Japanese car manufacturers are slow to transition to electric, barring the Nissan Leaf or Prius hybrid. They are cautiously watching, who survives and who doesn't. They will take notes from other's mistakes and come up with business plan. Currently long term ownership expenses of a gasoline and electric car is the same or in some cases, initial cost of an electric car adds years of buying gasoline. I wonder what is the future of gas stations? charging point + meeting people over a cup of tea. I would that.
