1980 Honda CB650 - oil change, trying to indentify the clicking noise (clutch, generator)

    It’s the primary chain, it’s worn out. The cb 650 has a tensioner though the chain might be too worn out. Replace that chain and it’ll run way better.

    The cam chain and tensioning adjustments are usually the cause of the rattling.
    My old Night Hawk ran beautifully but rattled like a can of mabbs.

    I've got the CB650C too and it sounds like cam chain noise. You'll never get rid of it as it's quite common, mine is just like this.

      Thanks for comment. Cleaning and syncing the carbs helped in a big way but the noose is still there when at low rpm (below 1300)

      @@robsworldcz cam chain definitly , this design is self adjusting if you loosen the cam chain bolt in front of the motor at low rpm it will adjust it self then tighten the bolt . crapy design dosnt work the best but will alleviate some sound .hope this helps .check manual for exact instruction would be best

    I have the same your bike and I did a clutch replacementbut for some reason when I start the bike up and put it into first and pull my clutch lever in the bike stalls out and jerks.. what did I do wrong how do I fix it

    I can almost guarantee it's something with your valve to your component adjustments.My 79 oil change doesn't have any metal or particulates in it either, that's great news grats! Not nice to pour out oil with signs of endless misery ahead inside of it (damn metal flakes)Hey man, did you ever figure out the clicking? It's typical for these bikes motors to get worn and whatever else and need some tappet adjustments.. it runs better with new fresh oil? Get into the tappet adjustment head/valves/breather cove onrs.what's the history of this bike? I'd be glad to help you out along the way if you have questions. But this sounds like some upper motor adjustments/shimming

      Hi, thanks for coment. I have absolutely no idea of the history of the bike. But ifbyou are interested, watch newest videos about 650c. I open the engine. To check. Its a home made work shot in my native language but i dont talk much. :) there is more footage w/o speaking....

      @@robsworldcz ok cool, well if you get yourself a tappet wrench, they're cheap.. and you just pull off the breather covers you only need to be able to see the tops of the valves, then the tappet wrench can go right in, that and some feeler guages I think will get your ticking sound fixed. Does it get louder as it warms up and the oil thins? The new oil sounding better makes me really think you could just check and make tappet adjustments. I'm almost positive that's your ticking.

      @@robsworldcz that or possibly a cam lobe is worn funny(probly not)? Also if you take something like a long screw driver with a smaller tip and touch it to different parts while making the sound, sometimes youll get an exaggerated sound when you get onto a part making the sound, works for squeals too.

      @@softsmoken valve clearence was adjusted... And the ticking goes off as it warms up andngets in revs. Also i am almost positive if goes from the bottom of the case. Around clutch or so.... We will see if i find some loose worn thing inside :-) primary chain or something around clutch....

      Smoke-This needed precise carb cleaning and sync and the sound almost disappeared. The rest is made by the clutch as fas as i was able to check

    sure u r not going to find the problem..the first problem..dont know what u doing..second..u was pointing the magneto when u was talking about taking the cluch out..u encounter nothing...u check the cluch..u didnt find nothing..the problem was righ in ur face ..but ur experience didnt let u identified the nocking..good luck..take it to a real mechanic...Ur welcome..
