That's because the most expensive things are subsidised for the locals (housing, health, food and public transport). International dollar PPP per capita is 131,426 for Singapore, 84,469 for Switzerland , 75,180 for the US, 55,862 for the UK and 42,067 for Portugal . Tourists can enjoy the fairly priced hawker foods and transport options.

The 2nd temple you went to (Thian Hock Keng) was used by sailors who landed in Singapore to thank the gods for proving them a safe journey. The temple was by the beach. So the land opposite the temple main door are all reclaimed land.

The thing to really remark upon apart from the temples itself is that next to Thian Hock Keng is a Durga temple to the right and a Islam mosque to the left, all within 100m of each other. A church is on the next street on Amoy Street. Same for the Buddha Tooth Relic temple where Sri Mariamman temple is about 400m away. Religious tolerance is practiced in an observable form.

My first time in Singapore was in 2008 during a 12 hours transit from a flight from Surabaya, Indonesia to Amsterdam.
Changi Airport provided a free bus tour around town and I was able to take it twice and get to know the modern Singapore.
Back then Marina Bay was still under construction.
Oh my, I am getting old!
Managed to go back in 2012 and stay at SEACARE hotel near Clark Quay for a short holiday and three in 2018, when I stayed in FURAMA also near Clark Quay and later near Bugis Street.
In 2019 I visited KL for a week and immediately I recognized it as being an affordable Singapore.

I thought Singapore was nice in the cleanliness and greenery aspect for such a densely populated city/country but I found it overrated and VERY overpriced. I absolutely didn't hate it, I just didn't love it. I did however LOVE LOVE LOVE the food!!! Absolutely amazing!!! I think there are many things we as Americans could take lessons on from Singapore though, like discipline, cleanliness, all the greenery, ect... I'd go back there again, but mostly for the food. I also wouldn't spend more than a day or two there, max... Enjoy you time and safe travels!

Accommodation is expensive but almost every other thing can be done on a budget. If you love the food, I suggest going out of the city center, there are many hawker centers located near MRT stations which is where the locals dine at. A day or 2 is definitely barely scratching on the surface.

@Pat my wife worked and lived there for 6 or 7 years and is a tight ass so she knew some great cheap places to eat...haha Also some of the best places to show me. I was there twice for 7-9 days and just didn't love it there. I grew up in a very rural area and just not into the big city life. Don't get me wrong, for a city it was pretty amazing. All of the little wet market foods and hawker stalls were amazing, especially for the cost. The botanical gardens were beautiful. Chinatown is pretty cool (probably my favorite area). The supertree garden, Marina Bay Sands, Singapore flier and some other places I don't remember are pretty cool too. I didn't hate it by any means, I just didn't love it. SOOOOOOOOO many better places in S.E. Asia for me and I haven't seen that many. 2 or 3 days at a time in Singapore is more than enough for me. Fortunately it's a pretty big and amazing world we live in so we can all find what appeals to each of us. Take care and safe travels in wherever life takes you...🛩🌎👍

Love Singapore! Will be there in Apr. My last trip was in 2018. Contrary to an earlier comment I read, there 's actually so much to do and different things to see in Singapore, despite its size. One does not need to travel miles to get from one attraction to another...so convenient, unlike Ontario, where I'm from and live. It may be more expensive than other Asian cities, but it's certainly not more expansive than Canada or any other developed countries. In fact, hotel/motel rares are cheaper than in Canada, and hawker food is so cheap....you can't get cooked food at those prices in Canada, not even in our food courts. Also, Singapore is truly international... a true mix of East and West, with English widely spoken, being one of their official languages and taught as a first language. As such, I find it easy for me to move around and stay in Singapore...signs aplenty in English, which I don't find in other Asian cities. The language barrier has always been a deterrence for me to travel widely in Asia, but not so in Singapore.

I have been to Singapore way back in the early 1990's and the cost of branded jeans was about P1,200 at that time and just about P350 only at the Philippines. I also ate at a Chinese restaurant and it cost me US$50 where I can have the same food at about 1/3 the price.

@@JumpingPlaces Yes, it was so expensive and so I just eat breakfast at McDonald and lunch and dinner at a fastfood corner. But twice I went to Marina for the eat- all- you-can (hotpot and grilled) menu to get the most of what I paid for.

Lovely video, so nice you were with your parents! ❤️ I have never been to Singapore, maybe one day! I have a Brasilian friend who took a job flying for Singapore Airlines Cargo. The first year he lived in Singapore but it was so expensive and he moved across the water to Malaysia for a big house and much lower cost of living. Just one hour drive to SIN. Stay safe and happy! 😘✌️🌺🥂

@@JumpingPlaces I went from Recife to Olinda to Rio and then São Paulo in three weeks time. I saw a lot and had many adventures. I will definitely return. Highlights in São Paulo were the Museu Afro Brasil in Ibirapuera Park, the Museu do Futebol and the Jardim Botânico. My future visit would include Salvador and more of the north as I’ve been told there’s a rich history of the music and culture of Afro Brasilians there.

1:40 You're comparing the price with third world countries? I think that's the normal price for such an appartment in most first world countries. Also, the location you chose is the more expensive touristy one.
Singapore didn't put a garden in a city ... they put a city in a garden. Trees everywhere, even along highways and right in urbanized areas.
