  • This is a video I shot last weekend from the cab of a diesel railcar. It is on the Northeastern Line as it passes Lamtakong Reservoir. What you will see at the start of the video are the pillars for the highspeed train to Nakhon Ratchasima. They start on the left and then cross over to the right and then skirt along the edge of the reservoir. When the water is at its highest level, the pillars should be surrounded by water.
At around the 8 minute marker, you will see the pillars coming back to the main track and then crossing over again to the left. This is where the best views of the reservoir are on the right. Though due to the cement trucks going up and down, it is pretty dusty.
At around the ten minute marker, you will see the tunnel construction site for the high speed train. I visited that tunnel a couple of months ago. At the 13 minute marker there is another tunnel entrance on the left.
Just after the 14 minute marker you will pass a station and the one of the tracks veers off to the left, and then a bit later a new set of tracks again veer off to the left. This is the new double tunnels that are being built as part of the double track project. so this train in the future will go through that tunnel on the left. It is called Lamtakong Tunnel. It is a shame in some ways as you will miss out on the views at the northern end of the reservoir. But you don't miss much.
At 16:30 minutes you will see the high speed elevated pillars come back in from the left and cross over to the right.

Look out for the PuiRodfai channel on TH-cam for Thai Language driver cabrides on that route. Also the Max Puttipong channel, which has more of a passenger perspective. These sites show clearly that double-tracking has already reached Chumphon. I am waiting to see when construction of the stretch to Surat Thani begins, but I wonder if I will last long enough go see it reach Hat-Yai Junction and beyond. ;-)

Here's another Thai language driver cabride tĥat has recently posted night freight workìngs to and from Bangkok Port, and passing thru trackside communities. I'd love to have a better understanding of the driver and co-driver banter. youtube.com/@trainstory?si=JIcXLU3o1Nup2wa5

I was just marvelling about the interesting content on this site when I also noticed that this is a Richard Barrow site. Now I am no longer surprised, but I can again see this becoming a go-to site.

Oh wow, thanks. I’m a bit embarrassed about the lack of content here. I’m not a very good TH-camr. I like doing website content and still photos. But I will try harder.

The footage is interesting, and will doubtless give you an excuse to enjoy a bit more of Thailand's second railway age. I wouldn't bother too much about commentary, as I think you will find that there are plenty of train nuts here who will post the detail for you if you provide the interesting content. I get bored from seeing the ugly mugs of backpacker youtubers anyway.
