It’s a kids film that addresses death, depression, failure and loss. So important to be able to come to terms with as a kid. I remember this and The Land Before Time helped me accept and understand my grandparents dying when I was young.
1:00 I think Atreyu immediately thought about when he was holding on to Artax in the Swamps of Sadness when he was sinking, after Rock Biter said he couldn't hold on to his friends. His reaction looks like one of someone who knows exactly how that feels.
This was the saddest scene for me and still makes me crying today. I feel so bad for the rockbiter. He used to be a proud and strong being and believed he could protect his friends from the Nothing. His whole body is like a walking mountain and nothing could hurt him. But then... the Nothing took away what was really precious to him. For the first time he realized how weak he really was and that he wasn't even able to save two small creatures from death. When I saw them sitting there and waiting for his death, I wanted to say "No, please don't do it! There is so much you can live for." But then I realized that it would be a lie. There wasn't anything left for him anymore. The Nothing already took everything away from him so he lost his will to live. Honestly this movie is one of the most depressing movies of my childhood.
And that's how it happens. You lose things you love and for the strong ones it only makes them question strength and the meaning of it all. "I will just sit here and let it take me away too". He gave up on himself. Heartbreaking.
This scene is in competition with the Swamp of Sadness scene for SADDEST THING EVER. I have horse-loving friends who constantly weep for Artex -- but for me, this scene is the worst. The Rockbiter is usually such a cheerful fellow. And here he is, at the utter depths of despair and disappointment in oneself. God.
In the book, this scene has the rockbiter crying over how he lost his wife and child to the nothing iirc... but it's still a great scene, even with the change. Everyone who is human has felt like this.
Goddamn this movie was so sad and fucked up and way too dark for me as a kid, I love it. This shit doesn't happen anymore. This was only for our generation.
this is the saddest scene in the film for me. the character is literally given up and committing suicide, because as strong as he though he was, he couldn't make a difference.
Alice Lay i would say otherwise, tho they are 2 very emotional scenes indeed. The rock biter is still a fictional character as Artax is a real animal that we see everyday.I can't stand watching animals get hurt and especially die.Wheter it's a movie or not it's more painfull in real life but in a movie it gives you the sense of realism.Witch is very paintfull to some people. :) have a nice day.
This is funny! The German / European version I grew up with has its own soundtrack, so for me it's the same with the other soundtrack. Compared to each other this one here sounds almost too fancy for me. 🤷♀️ We have a sad pan flute theme used for both, Artax' death and this scene, it is way more simple yet powerful.
This is so awesome. i forgot how great the Rock Eater dude was. I'm going also be that nerd that says you don't get as connected to a CG character like you do something real and physical like that. Fantastic.
This is, by far, one of the many reasons why The Neverending Story continues to live on in the hearts and minds of those who see it. The Rock Biter’s acknowledgment of how physically strong he is, while still being weak in the wake of what the Nothing did to his friends. It’s a heartbreaking scene as we see an immense, gentle giant be felled after his spirit is completely crushed and despair settles in. The fact that he’s even willing to let the Nothing take him shows that he’s lost all hope in himself and the world, only desiring to not be alone and feel strong amongst his little friends once more. Truly an emotional moment, one that definitely pulls at the heartstrings.
you know what's sad? The fact that no children's film on earth would have the guts to try this today. Heck, most adult films wouldn't be able to pull this off so well.
I have never seen this movie, nor have I read the book it is based upon. And yet, watching this scene alone... is just so powerful. From the way his speech begins about his "big, strong hands", leading up to his despair over the fact that he failed to save his friends, and then ends by solemnly accepting his fate... powerful. No other word can describe it. Just... powerful.
@Neofcon He always thought he was a strong person. But when it came to the crunch even his strength couldn't save the thing that mattered the most to him. He failed. That and the sheer despair in the scene. He failed and now he's just waiting for the end because without his strength, what does he have left?

Wow! I agree about both... "Big Strong hands" and "tears in rain" are my favorite monologues in Movie history, well... Except for "F***ed up girl" monologue in Eternal Sunshine. I need to find that clip too...
Oh gosh, I can't believe how sad this scene was. I may not have cried back then, I was probably too young to understand what he said, but I'm crying now!
I recently went back to this movie, I barely have any memory of when I watched it as a kid. There are definitely several scenes that made me cringe(EVERY scene with the Luck Dragon, for example), but I wish there was more Rock Biter. I loved this guy the moment he started talking. I was disappointed when I watched #2, with the movie in general as well as the new voice for Rock Biter and bringing in some irrelevant baby. I love the image of this huge, tough creature with a memory that stretches to ancient times and the humility and wisdom of millenia. After being told the one thing in all the realm that could stop it failed to do so, it's understandable that he would give in and accept doom. It was very mature of him to see the end of the world coming and, believing nothing can stop it, accept it even though he didn't want it. That one scene was pretty much the only one that I truly appreciated.
I'm going to have to use this one the next time I call in sick "I lost the Auryn, I can't find my luck dragon... so I won't be able to get beyond the boundaries of my bedroom"
I love the scene after this with the wolf; that stuff about the reason why Fantasia is dying is so artistic and I have to say it again deeeep! Fantasia is dying because mankind's dreams are dying. Gorgeously deeep!!
This is truly one of the most moving scenes in movie history. No doubt about it. I just wish someone could tell me who did the voice of the Rock Biter.
These are REAL kids movies. They aren't unwatchable once you reach 10, or just full of slapstick humour. They're the ones that make you think, even as an adult.
I was feeling tears in my eyes...no, wait, they're still there! man, this is so sad!! Atreyu is still so awesome; poor boy! He feels like the whole of Fantasia is ion his shoulders...and it is! T.T
@DulBeat True, but I think of them as the exception that proves the rule. In today's film world they are in the minority of film makers who care about their craft, but they do act as an inspiration to others.
It's weird to think that we went from this emotional scene with Rock Biter in the original to something as phenominally awful as the 3rd film and the pointless scene of him on his bike singing. But this film is amazing!
It's a reminder for me that I ultimately can't trust in my own strength and intelligence. At the end of the day I'm still just a fragile human being. I will always need God to reach down and help me, because I have my limits. I have a personal testimony of how God Has Lifted Me Out of despair many times. Many times I felt like giving up but he always gave me just what I needed to get up and live again.
i can relate to the rockbiter. I always thought i had big strong hands but they werent enough to keep the bottle of vodka away from my wife's lips. They're just as weak as i am and the flesh that carries me yearns to join her.
+inconceivabledark Me. but i feel that in the world where the Devil is like the nothing, we are the rockbiters trying to do everything to stop people who are our friends and relatives from being violent to us (they are being swept away by the nothing/Devil) and only Jesus/God represented by Atreyu can actually save them, not us. But we should not just sit there and let the nothing (or depression/anxiety plus the Devil etc) take us away, like the rockbiter was going to sit there. We have to fight and struggle to keep our story going. Not surrender to darkness. It really helps me to pray, and go to church. That is part of my fight against the nothing/darkness/anxiety/Devil. Anyway this is my interpretation as a Christian domestic violence survivor who loves fantasy stories. :) Don't worry, I am not living with any abusive people anymore. Woohoo!
zachary moss Amen :) I just made a report about some other people I witnessed being violent (not my family but another one) and I had to escape them and now I am homeless, but at least I made my report and the people who got hurt will hopefully be in a better place soon.
sure hes bummed out about losing his friends but i think hes even more upset about his pride see up till now rock biter thought he was the strongest thing in creation (they look like big strong hands) but after realizing he couldnt save two small creatures for the first time in his life he felt vulnerable weak thats the main reason hes so upset i bet
It's a mixture of pride, loyalty and shame he probably kept telling them he could save them, that it would be okay, but in the end, he could not do anything to stop them being lost, no matter how he tried...
I believe it's a bit of a mix of both. He took great pride in his strength, but when the nothing came he realized that in the end no amount of strength was enough to save his friends, they died and his strength could do nothing to save them, making him realize that ultimately his strength is meaningless.
Who scored this film? it's stunning, once you discover this is a german film it becomes obvious, it's so wagnerian and deep and romantic. Yummmy, yummy, yummy.
Its a bit like the story of King Kamut..............he couldnt stop the tide coming in and the Rockbiter couldnt stop the nothing..............even with his big strong hands.
HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHA!!! I was thinking the same thing when I first saw this movie back in the day. What kind of messed up world this kid must have lived in for ish like that to be normal.

Lbt devistated me.. mom would should me that film.. them was murdered.. I still can't watch it
No matter how strong you feel, how reliable and stable, you will find yourself powerless when someone you care about is gone.
It’s like with Bastian and his mother. Who died and fells like he lost something as big as the characters in the never ending story.
People always talk about how the scene with Atreyu's horse in the swamp is the saddest part in the movie, I say this is... :'(
I havent seen the movie in a long time but wasnt that scene like 10 seconds long? I remember thinking it was way too quick of a scene
1:00 I think Atreyu immediately thought about when he was holding on to Artax in the Swamps of Sadness when he was sinking, after Rock Biter said he couldn't hold on to his friends. His reaction looks like one of someone who knows exactly how that feels.

And that's how it happens. You lose things you love and for the strong ones it only makes them question strength and the meaning of it all. "I will just sit here and let it take me away too". He gave up on himself. Heartbreaking.
I always found this scene to be so overwhelming in its despair that I didn't even have the energy to cry.
This scene is in competition with the Swamp of Sadness scene for SADDEST THING EVER. I have horse-loving friends who constantly weep for Artex -- but for me, this scene is the worst. Save yourself the disappointment...cherish this original masterpiece...

this is the saddest scene in the film for me. the character is literally given up and committing suicide, because as strong as he though he was, he couldn't make a difference.
A very emotional scene, more powerful than i would of thought
yeah well he is the rock biter :).
My sister cries more at that scene that at Artax's death.

Yet, Artax is also a fictional character. They didn't really hurt a horse for a scene. I don't understand what bothers you in my comment.
Alice Lay lol it's funny how you don'tget my question ;) but no problem we all have our opinions ;).
I couldn't imagine The Neverending Story without this amazing soundtrack. It really gives the sad scenes so much more impact.

The Rock Biter! One of my favorite characters of all time!
Easily the most powerful scene in entire movie.

If a guy dressed as a big rock dude and animatronics can move you tears, they must be doing something right.
There is more emotion in this stupid puppet than Galadriel has in The Rings of Power show.

Always loved the Rock Biter scene! They are good and strong... hands...!! :):)
As someone who puts to much belief in my strength this scene kills me. There is always limitations on what can be done to save someone.
Man this part made me so sad when I was a kid.
Proof that CG can never replace good acting and direction.
Berserk 2016 truly proves this statement
Big, goofy, stop motion puppets shouldn't be able to make a grown man feel like this...
Esta escena de la película llega al alma la nada avanza. Que buena interpretación del niño.
