      FLStudio has an unlimited time free demo with full features unlocked, the only downside is you can't open any project saved meaning that you kinda have to make the music in one go until you're able to purchase it
      It's really worth it though, you get a lifetime free update, getting access to FL's forum, and able to use legacy version without needing to repurchase
      the lowest tier is 99 USD which is reaally limiting, not able either to record nor use audio clips whatsoever
      second tier is 199 USD, it's what i suggest buying 'cause you get to have access to basically everything you need like audio recording, full playlist features, additional plugins etc.
      you can ignore the rest tier, they basically just adding more plugins and stuff

    My experience with Unity and Godot. Godot is a great engine, and so is Unity, however, since Godot is a lot younger, that means it doesn't have as many niche tutorials as Unity. That might not be an issue to everyone, but since niche tutorials often cover hard subject, that can make it harder to recreate in Godot. Unity also has a lot of features built in, that might require you to write a lot of code in Godot, to achieve the same thing.
    Prefabs and nodes are both easy to get used to though, and the custom themes in Godot are very nice.
    The subscription based model Unity has is no issue, since it is virtually free, except for a few advanced features that most people don't need. Most people don't make $100k a year, and if they do, paying for either the $25 or the $125 subscription is no problem.
    Support in Unity is also miles a head of godot, since they have a full paid support team ready to help you at all times. Godot is free, but that also means they have to prioritize their manpower, which makes them lack a lot in the professional support part. I haven't had an issue yet with either engine, that required that level of support.
    You can export to so many different platforms on Unity. If it exists, Unity can export to it. Godot is not quite there yet, but it seems like it is going to happen soon.
    To conclude, Unity has some major advantages over Godot, and Godot is slowly following along. One last very important thing to consider is popularity and job oppertunities. There are waaay more companies using Unity than Godot.
    I made this way too long, but I still hope you learned something!

    Several noteworthy mistakes in this video:
    GDScript is _not_ based on python and does not work like python. It simply takes inspiration from python for its _basic_ syntax.
    Godot is entirely capable of exporting to all major consoles and handhelds. It will however never be able to publicly distribute export templates for this. Since they require the user to be a licensed developer for that platform. Once you have that license, you can make your own temples, or get them through lonewolf.

    I have recently started using the godot engine, and I must say, that I really like what I see. It's easy to get into, it's easy to expand upon and it has a great and helpful community. TH-cam channels that push out tutorials every day and a lot of written content, it's easy to make something, and finish something. I work as a game designer at Lemonchili games and Godot is the tool I use for protoyping. The key difference about the engine and why everyone that comes to the engine ends up loving it is not about a cool script editor or a list of built in features. It's mostly the node system. If you like nested prefabs then Godot will blow your mind. Everything is a node and your whole game is a tree of nodes with the root of the tree being the viewport. There is no difference between scene, prefab and component and this simplicity is deceptively powerful, and once you wrap your mind around it changes the way you think about how to build your games. It enables you make your game more flexible and solid with a lot less code. It enables you to work in parallel with your team without fear of merge conflicts.
    More importantly since the only way they make money is by making the engine so good that users will donate monthly to them, it has a strong focus on listening to the community and adding the features they are needing, and no commercial pressure to add flashy features aimed at user acquisition.

    I'm really excited to see Godot growing and expanding in features, however I'm sorry to be a party pooper but the other engines such as Unity and UE4 also keep growing.
    In 2019 we will have more or less stable version of Unity using Entity Component System and DOTS, while UE4 keeps adding nice features like Chaos etc.
    And the price you're paying for the engine and features isn't as ridiculous as the video states, with UE4 you pay royalties when you're making more than $3k per quarter if I'm not mistaken, and with Unity can pay nothing until you make $100k per year or when your project is ready to be published and you want to get rid of their customizable logo when your game starts, and also every team member working in Unity has to get the subscription as well.
    In other words, the features provided by competing engines that you can pay for later if your sales exceed certain amount, in my opinion well justify the royalties/subscriptions they have, and the fact that Godot is free doesn't make it as huge big of a deal as the video states. It's still great that something like this exists, but it isn't a game changer, at least for now.

    • @Jonathan_Wick
      @Jonathan_Wick 5 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Vardas Agreed, and to your point, UE4’s Source is available and editable. I’ve compiled many a custom UE4 build with different features and tech implemented and such. So the whole “the source code is available” doesn’t hold either. It’s a great little engine. But it doesn’t hold a candle to UE4/Unity in terms of feature set and available technology. Nothing wrong with that though. But as you said, it’s not a game changer... yet.

    @5:50: Beause MSVS or Mono Develop which are used by Unity and Unreal don't have things like code completion or syntax highlighting, right? I have nothing against godot, in fact I welcome an open source/MIT alternative to the proprietary big ones, but if you wanna make a point of it having advantages over them and will be the "next huge thing" at the very least try to not make it sound that for example Unity or Unreal doesn't have basic features like those if the reality is that the editor that is used by those engines has those features as well. It really just hurts your credibility and makes the video seem VERY biased.

    • @Lantichan
      @Lantichan 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@aestheticPhantasm I still would've worded it differently, putting more emphasis on that it's build-in and maybe point out some features that are unique to it (For example, the fully integrated Documentation or the Community driven language support) instead of picking two industry standard features. But it is a fair point nonetheless.
      As for the implication of me being the one biased: I wouldn't gain anything from leaning towards any of the engines. They all have their pros and cons and I try to stay open to use whatever engine fits my needs the best, since it'll save me a headache in the long run. But I do not like comparisons that - to me - feel skewed towards a certain direction, which is all I wanted to express in the comment. Though I was about to make a demo level for one mechanic that I am pretty proud of. It is a 2D puzzle platformer where the character can die and a ghost appears next to the character. The player then switches between the two to solve puzzles. Well, that's the idea anyway. The level is basically die, move ghost through a wall to touch a button to remove the wall and the character goes to the end point to the next level.

I don't see anyone claiming that Godot is an important engine to have on your resume if your trying to get hired at a AAA company, and no one is claiming that universities need to start teaching this engine. I think the video made it pretty clear that this is a simple community-driven engine, ideal for indies.

    I love when a developer of a software gives their software away for free and gives you the option to support them. Blender, a 2D/3D animation software does this also. It's really powerful and probably as good as the expensive animation software. You can tell that the devs care a lot for their project considering how bit and awesome update 2.8 is. It's completely changing the layout of Blender and adding a ton of great things.
    Godot looks really good. and can't wait to try it. Can you 3D model and/or paint your sprites in Godot or do you need external software?
    But anyways, with everything we have access to, there is no excuse to not be a game dev, animator, streamer, online influencer, etc and follow your dreams. My older brother wanted to be a game dev. You don't need to go to collage to educate yourself. We have tons of free game dev software like "Unity", "Unreal Engine", and now "Godot". We have tons of tutorials to help learn the program.

    Keep making Super Teal Robot in Construct 3! PLS! (Also try making a 3D 3rd person version!) Love your channel!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :)
    P.S. Try adding missiles, a flamethrower, a roll, a crouch, a double jump, and a deflect shield for Super Teal Robot, plus the enemies and their A.I. s! Maybe a food or heath system, jumping, melee? Keep on making great content!

    Game maker as well, that was part of the training when I did a formal course on game development.
    In turn I then ghost-wrote a few chapters on a workbook for learning how to make games in game maker...

      Don't be disappointed. Godot is still young and unity is still improving. Unity is free too like Godot (unless u make like $10 K a year I think) and does 2D and 3D too. Nothing special about Godot other than the fact it is open source and use little memory.

    I'm currently researching Bolt vs Playmaker for Unity and this video pops up in my notification.
    What is the learning curve for Godot for a person with almost zero programming knowledge?

    • @Tdoshok
      @Tdoshok 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It depends on the person and the circumstances, obviously, but my personal experience was awesome with it. I've got no compsci background (drama degree and theatre education masters) and was making simple platform games in a matter of days. Within 6 months I was making tutorials. And I was 41 at the time.
      Not everyone clicks with it right away, but a lot of folks do.

      I've used a bit of both (with no coding skill), and Godot is definitely easier to learn. If you're making games just to learn code, Godot actually has C# support as well, so learning Godot using C# will make learning other engines easier too.

    Foreshadowing, now godot is huge.

  • @brianmartin4178
    @brianmartin4178 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    Been playing around with this engine for about a week now.
    It's certainly attractive - small, loads fast, generated games are not massive and you can code in GDScript and then optimise bits in C++.
    I have a current project I'm developing in Unreal but am seriously considering moving to Godot for the following reasons:
    Unreal is a massive multi GB download whereas Godot is currently 50MB.
    In Unreal if you make a mistake in your C++, the editor won't load your project. This can be fixed by sorting it out in VIsual Studio but what if one of your blueprints does this? Then you're screwed since they can only be edited in the editor. It seems that Unreal interferes too much with your code whereas Godot doesn't. In fact, I much prefer C++ in Godot than in Unreal. It feels more like "normal" C++.
    Love the node system. That's awesome.
    Building even a small C++ project in Unreal seems to take ages whereas Godot is, in comparison, blisteringly fast.
    Godot seems to actually import models from Blender better - you can embedd the materials and they get imported too, not just the mesh. In Unreal you have to spend ages setting up a material and then plugging in to the mesh - a repeat of work you did in your 3D modelling program.
    Oh, and Godot is COMPLETELY free.
    However, there are some things missing:
    No terrain editor. (But someone's done a plug in).
    No support for consoles, as standard.
    No level streaming.
    The C++ documentation is virtually non-existent. You have to look at GDScript examples and then convert, although that's not so difficult. This is one area where Unreal wins - the docs for both Blueprints and C++ are almost perfect.
    No C++ support out of the box. You have to download the bindings and build them. Had a few stumpers with that although I eventually sorted it out.
    Found a few of the functions that are available in GDScript like lerp() are missing so had to write them meself.
    It'll be interesting to see how good Godot 4.x is.

    Ok, so I am just starting to actually try to make a game, and I fairly recently found Game maker studio 2, downloaded it, and did one of the tutorials. I then started adapting it into an idea I have for a game. I haven't done much yet, but it seems fairly straightforward and like I could do it. I am still early on enough that I could switch to Godot and learn it more in depth instead, which would you recommend? (Before this I did a bunch of stuff in scratch, but in GMS2 I did use the actual code, not DND. Also, next year I am going to be learning Java if that affects anything.)
