  • Ofra sang Shecharchoret in 1976, for a tour among Jewish communities in the US, before she recorded her first solo album.
    lyrics:
    ---
    Shecharchoret yikre'uni
    tzach haya ori
    umilahat shemesh kayitz
    va'ani shechori
    Chorus:
    Shecharchoret
    yafyafit kol kach
    be'einayich esh bo'eret
    libi kulo shelach
    Shecharchoret yikre'uni
    kol yordei hayam
    im od pa'am yikre'uni
    shuv elech itam
    Shecharchoret yikre'eni
    ben le'av molech
    im od pa'am yikre'uni
    acharav elech
    translation:
    ---
The dark girl, they call me
    my skin was pure white
from the fire of the summer sun
    I am dark
    Chorus:
    Dark girl
    so very beautiful
in your eyes - a burning fire
    my heart is all yours
The dark girl, they call me
all those who go down to the sea
    if again they call me
I will go with them again
The dark girl, they call me
    son to the ruling king
    if he calls me again
    I will follow him

I can remember Ofra Haza when her Songs from Yemen came out; when she wore her traditional attire. When I first heard her sing, she was the first Israeli female vocalist I heard. From then on she became my favorite. As the saying goes: " You never forget your first girl". So when she died a piece of me went with her. May she rest in peace; and when her Mourner's Kaddish annually comes around, may we all take a few minutes to remember her and the contributions she made to her music.

Completely agree. She had such "universal", how to say, voice, that she could be undrestood in any country, without understanding language. JOY IS JOY, SORROW IS SOROW. Express true feeling, Singing Hebrew. As for me , Im Christian Russian. Heard her singing in old Kaveret. Thank you, Ofra. Thank you, Israel. Shma Israel!

This woman was very special. Nobody has forgotten her, she was an icon and still is today in Israel and elsewhere in the world. She did a lot with her talent by spreading the Jewish Yemenite culture with her songs all over the world and embracing the westerner culture in the same time. She was really one of the pionniers of World Music at a time music was not as mixed and cosmopolitan as today. Bless, bless her for it ❤️

I heard Ofra Haza sing this song on that tour of US Jewish communities. A Jewish friend had brought me to the concert. I didn't understand a word but the beauty of the song and the singer stayed with me all these years. When I looked up Ofra Haza online last year, I found she had become a star -- and then had died. I grieve for your loss. Her many recordings are a consolation, but "Shecharchoret" I could not find -- until now. Thank you for posting this lovely, lovely song.

How nice to hear the beauty of dark complected women being celebrated! I am olive skinned, dark haired and brown eyed and, as a Jewish American, have been hated for it. In all the Jewish communities I've been in, the blond is THE prize. From the earliest I can remember my mother grieved the fact that I wasn't blond or red haired; my step brother had a daughter and every time I spoke with my father he brought up the fact that the baby had "blue eyes." I have had Jewish people say terrible things about me, simply because I am not fair complected. Funny how Jewish people often espouse the very same racism that Nazism did. Strange, non-Jewish guys think I'm beautiful as do non-Jewish women. Go figure!

+Lisandro Aramayo esta es la versión más reciente, la hebrea. La sefaradí es anterior. Saludos!

A great and wonderful Ivrit/Hebrew/Israeli song and melody! It's to fall in love with ...
I know both versions, Esther Ofarim's and Ofra Haza's; I know both singers very well (acustically ;:-).
Though that's no competition here, I put all the both to my Favorites & Play list ...
I slightly prefer Esther Ofarim's version; but I can't really say why. I own, up from a longplay record, a clean and fine longer version which I want to upload here for you soon.
    Good-bye, and enjoy! (Dhibannour)

All the world's problems and differences can be settled if people just ate awesome food together. Both arabs and Jews have awesome food. Lets put down the guns and pick up the forks. ;-)
