This was part of a podcast series about Ray I did in 2009. I was always a fan but producing that series taught me quite a bit about just how remarkable a man he was.
@@JazzVideoGuy my older brother had a supper club in Fort Lauderdale and Ray performed a few times early '70s, I like all non overly electrified music starting with Bach to Coltrane to Bluegrass to salsa. All talented without fake electronic gimmicks, one of my knocks on later '70s jazz was synthesizers and it quickly got boring IMO. Ditto with all late '70s music declining except salsa
I did a Ray Charles Podcast series in 2009 and learned quite a bit about Ray. One story. All his life, he insisted on being paid in cash, only $1 bills, right before a gig.. He sight impared and as a young man, a promoter cheated him out of thousands of dollars, telling him they were $100 bills. So far the rest of his life, he was paid in singles. Must have been interesting at venue like Madison Square Garden where he was $50,000 a night. Sometimes more.
Genius Plus Soul = Jazz has to be Ray Charles epic album. Arrangements by Quincy, backup by Basie sidemen ( if I iremember correctly). "Outskirts Of Town" , zowzy.
That the think what John Zorn do (all this musicians dis on them time like John Coltrane ; Charles Mingus ; Ornette Coleman (with Charlie Hadden"Country bass player") ; Marc Johnson (with rock who's fusion in his solos bass) ; One night ; after live we just finish ; i said to my drummer " we're vert played free-jazz : Daniel (Humair) answer - if we made free-jazz ; Armstrong played free-jazz. Today i know he was right (AEOC or Cécil Taylor made an hommage music to Jelly Roll or Fanfares in New Orléans)
Another winner by the SoulCountry Video Guy
But the question is, can I dance.
One of the greats for sure, I'm a fan of guys getting beyond the fish bowl

HANK WILLIAMS IS THE BLUES just with different instrumentation and sung in a good ole boy accent!
The world is a better place thanks to Jazz Video Guy and the late Billy Taylor.
Thank you so much for your kind words!
There's a great album of John Scofield playing Ray's music. Great musicians can play anything. You should hear Bird blow on 80's pop!
Thank you, I must check that out.

Yes, a most epic album. Recorded in the early 60s, it's still fresh.
Very relevant to Beyoncé’s turn into Country in 2024. Thanks for this background!
Interesting comparison.
.....and R&B Gospel Video Guy
Good idea for a TH-cam channel.

Greatly appreciate you taking the time to express your thoughts!
Beyonce brought me here, going down the rabbit hole of Black country singers. 😊
interesting journey!
